The Letterkenny Fire Dept's primary responsibility is to protect the part of the depot that is still owned by the Federal Gov't. They don't run off base that much and that's just the way it is. I understand they were closer to the accident but only by about 4 mins. If the Franklins would have needed there assistance they would have been called without hesitation. George you said you don't see them leaving their building often. Who cares how often they leave, they don't get paid for what they do they get paid for what they MIGHT have to do. You want to bad mouth the fire dept with your little piss comment but your the same person that will be crying for them when you need help. REMEMBER THAT!!!

Ltrkny was not requested because the accident did not occur on the Depot.

That's 4 minutes that they could have been on scene helping the injured person or persons. It wasn't that long ago that 2 young people died very close to the same spot. And if I am correct as I wasn't around there was a woman who died on the same road late last year on a head on crash. My point is this... fastest response with the vital people and equipment equals "GREATEST CARE" for victims in any emergency. 4 minutes could very well mean the difference between life and death. But again, just my point of view. I really wish people wouldn't take offense... just wanted to raise a very important topic to me as I travel that road everyday also.

My question is this:

Franklin Fire Dept. didn't need Lky FD's help, did the people in the car? Would it have benefited them to have medical treatment 4 minutes faster?

I am not saying the Depot guys should take over any part of anyone's area but it might make sense if they are closer to have them dispatched at the same time.

I am sure whoever needs help (accident, fire or otherwise)could care less which FD is responsible for that area or what color the fire trucks are just that they get the help they need in the quickest manner possible.

Even though Lky is responsible for the Depot, they do run in the County, Salem Rd. is a whole lot closer than the Borough and they go their pretty often.

Just My Point---I agree with you 100%. There have been senseless fatalities on that road, and something needs to be done. Every time I drive Letterkenny Rd I take my life in my hands. It's nothing for people to drive 75 or 80 there just to get to Letterkenny or back home.(was the woman who hit the carload of kids trying to rush to Letterkenny?)

As far as the Army Base Fire Dept, all they are concerned with is keeping their vehicles clean for inspections. It's a sad situation, indeed. If all the Base Fire Dept wants to do is respond to dumpster fires, we don't even need them. Let Franklin handle it.

exactly, they are part of the depot, you don't see the MP's patrolling off the depot, do you, as it is not their resposibility, same thing with the FD, their responsibility is the depot, they are PAID by the FED. govt., not volunteers for the county..........

There is a little thing out here that Franklin shouldn't have to deal with and LKY Fire Department does and that is called Explosives! LKY is an outstanding Fire Department. There are called LKY Fired Dept for that reason they are here to deal with Fires and Emergencies for LKY. But when ask they will be the first ones on the scene anywhere.

OK, I understand that you feel that letterkenny's FD is only for letterkenny fires. Then move them onto letterkenny, and everybody knows they won't be available unless they are in a letterkenny building! If what you're saying is correct (they only deal with stuff on base), that means that even though my building is across the street from the letterkenny FD, if I had a heart attack, I'd have to wait for an ambulance to come from in town. Don't care for that at all.

I think we got off the wrong foot somewhere....... In raising the issue of whether or not LKFD should have responded we started bashing and praising them. I thank EVERY PAID FF/EMT & VOLUNTEER for their dedication and courage to respond to some crazy stuff.

In trying to be equal.... I understand that the depot is their first priority, but who do we "the public" hold responsible for a death that may occur in any tragic event whether it be fire or an accident if LKFD is the closest facility to respond and they don't even get notified or requested? Is it the depot commander's fault or is it whomever didn't ask them to help out? As I understand it they are available to respond anytime when requested... but that is 3rd party info and may be incorrect. Negligence is a very sticky issue..... It could get someone into a very LARGE lawsuit and have them explaining some very precarious things to a jury for deliberation on who is at fault for failing to commit the best care for someone that could have been saved.

A very important set of issues have been presented here.

1. An accident occured on salem road. True.
2. Franklin Sta.4 responded. true.
3. Letterkenny FD should have been there. Opinion not fact.
4. Letterkenny FD is available for response off post. True. its called mutual aid.
5. Letterkenny FD is there for Letterkenny. True. This is what they get paid for. Going out into the community is a plus but not their main mission.
6. People should know what they are typing about before they do. rumor and speculation = an educated attempt to talk like you know what the truth or reality is.

From Point 4 it can then be said that Lky FD is a resource that is available. That resource was the closest available aid to a reported serious accident and wasn't used.- The question now -

"Why not?"

I understand Lky only runs off the Depot when requested. Why would anyone with the resource available not use it?
