This is great. Now if only Chambersburg could get with the times and recycle more . When I lived in town I never knew when recycling day was, and they only seemed to collect it sporadically maybe once a month. Pretty poor considering Shippensburg collects every week. Not to mention the borough won't collect anything but cardboard from businesses. I've gone to numerous people affiliated with the Borough and called the Borough myself to find out how to get my store's plastics collected: the friends get nowhere and when I call I just get moved around.

Mandatory recycling is a sham and an infringement of our rights. I think people should be encouraged to recycle their cans and glass bottles, but compulsory recycling is ridiculous. I'm also convinced that some recycling practices actually do more environmental harm than good, especially in regards to paper.

We should be taking all the money that goes into that recycling money pit, and put it toward creating alternative fuel and energy sources.

Could not agree more. Value is what someone will pay you for something. The only items with value are metal, the rest is garbage.

I wanted to say this before, but I forgot. Here in Oregon they get deposit for the return of cans and bottles. Soda, beer,, some waterbottles. But when you buy it you pay deposit, you don't get the money for nothing. Unless your one of the street people who pick them up off the sides of the street or 'dumpster dive' for them. you see a lot of street people pushing shopping carts, filled with bottles and cans.

Interesting... If the second landfill had opened, it would have replaced the current one and at least it would have been nearer to the turnpike so less traffic would have been on our roads and in our towns. Also, it was going to be local trash only. The current landfill which is enormous, accepts garbage from out of state and is growing exponentially. It is actually well run (except for the methane odor on rte 641) but the truck traffic is a nuisance to local residents. The local towns of Newville and Newburg are not really designed to handle semi trucks. Only the future citizens will really know what the impact will be of such a huge mountain of trash!
We personally recycle in 3 states. PA is the only one that leaves it in the hands of the citizens. VA and FL operate excellent full recycling stations open daily and funded by our property taxes. We find it easier and preferable to the once a month volunteer efforts found only in a few rare counties in PA (Thanks Pat and crew). We nees to wake up here. Rendell needs to go green!
