As a "card-holding certified" native-american descendant, I appreciate the preservation of the native culture, which is very spiritual and private, it has nothing to due with race, it has everything to do with honor. In fact, in order to be verified native-american you have to specifically trace your ancestry via heritage rosters and apply with whichever nation you descend. So for "indians" it is offensive for "anyone" to call themselves such, simply because of a possible kinship. In essence we're probably all descendants, though there are those of us, who take the preservation very seriously.

Name Newberry 's mascot after Univ.of Northern Colorado's mascot "The Fighting Whites". I'm about as white as you can get and it wouldn't offend me. I think it would be great.

The same goes for a lot of groups. To be an official member of a Scottish Clan, you have to do the same thing. You have to prove that you are a descendant of that Clan. You don't hear Scots crying about the schools across the country who call themselves "Fighting Scots, Scots, or Highlanders." To me, it is a sign of respect and reverence to try and be associated with a group of people. I bet if these schools offered to give each tribe a percentage of their profits, we wouldn't be having this discussion. At least the Seminole tribe gets it!

I think the NCAA should start looking at bigger issues like the graduation rates for all sports. A small Division II school is making no issues with their Indian nickname, but it will get changed. I just hope the Board of Trustees along with the President of the College have the balls to step up to the NCAA and decide on a mascot like Engines.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it NCAA

You might be right. And I didn't say I agreed with the decision. I was just putting my two-cents in.

I neglected to say that it was an intermural basketball team at Northern Colorado, but that wasn't the point I was trying to get across. It's the PC BS.

Mmmm... Sitting Bull suggests name the school Newberry Nothin's.

Nothing is nothing and shouldn't offend nobody, no way, no how.

Or they could give in keep their old name and fund the Cherokee bingo business. And who decided they were named for the Cherokees? What about the other tribes aren't they going to benefit from the payoff?

So states like Delaware and Indiana should change their names, all the towns and cities, and all the lakes, rivers, roads etc. etc. with Indian names should change. I'm sick of all this PC BS. Lower the price I pay for gas, fix the economy so that companies can give Americans a payraise more often than once every ten years, and keep jobs in America. Quit worring over the small stuff.

Yeah, um... you do realize that this is mandated crapola from the NCAA and not a federally mandated thing right? Last time I checked, the NCAA didn't have anything to do with the price of gas, pay raises, or job outsourcing...

Ummm, yeah... YOu do realize that this is an NCAA mandate and not a mandate issued from state or federal governments right? The last time I checked, the NCAA didn't have a thing to do with gas prices, salaries, or job outsourcing...

The point of the matter is not what the NCAA does or does not mandate. The point I make is that organizations and individuals throughout the country including government are way too caught up in political correctness, we are becoming a country where, on many issues, the rules and in some cases laws, are being changed by the few who complain even though the majority disagree. In some cases when a true injustice has or is occuring to a minority this can be a good thing. But the point remains that we cater more and more to to anyone who squeaks about any trivial matter, the media jumps on the bandwagon, at first as minor news then if there seems to be any interest in the story they will feed the fire and begin to sensationalize the story, then the righteous do gooders such as congressmen, NCAA board members, PETA, etc. see it as their duty to protect these few sensitive souls, and the next thing you know new rules are being mandated such as not being able to call your school the Indians. I would simply rather see the energies of these decision making bodies be put to better use such as keeping our bridges from falling down, more mass transit, better education, keeping jobs in America ...
Ummm....GOT IT?

Well you might want to make that point the first time next time instead of sounding ignorant by going off on some diatribe about higher gas prices getting out of control (which has nothing at all to do with the "political correctness" crap in this world)

So, uhhhh.... yeah, I get it: Hence, the several previous sarcastic posts I made on this thread -- I am glad to see that you do get it too. I was getting worried for you for a moment when you appeared to swerve off topic for a second... Sorry, your "examples" were a little too obscure.
