Here's a look at them:
http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dfw/dfw_fisher.htm

This article states: "Wildlife officials had heard of isolated sitings of fishers by hikers, hunters and trappers."

Oh please. It's "sightings," not "sitings." When will you HIRE THE LITERATE?

I thought this was an article about Nancy Pelosi (D-Botox/Moonbat).

Bigger than a dog and a lot nastier. Nice catch by the biologist.
Probably not an animal who's range is expanding at this point though. Could be activity in previously undisturbed areas in PA and NY causing the sightings. Could be that it was always around and it's just very good at staying hidden.

I have been following the story of the return of the fisher to New Jersey when the article was first published in the New Jersey Sunday Herald at the end of last year. This was just after Charles Kontos made the discovery and it was caught on camera. I really enjoyed the story in Monday's Star Ledger. It was extremely informative and the pictures and drawing were great. I will continue to follow this story and wish Charles Kontos continued success with his research.

There is a fisher living in the small patch of woods behind my house in Toms River, NJ. I saw him a couple days ago while walking one of the dogs back in the wooded area. I thought it was a cat at first, but then he stood up on his hind legs to get a good look at us. I hurried towards it so I could get a better look, and I was completely baffled. He's about the size of an otter, with a weasel face. I spooked him and he climbed up a tree. I have never seen anything like him in this part of Jersey before, and I'm still a little confused as to why he's living in this tiny patch of woods in the middle of a large, suburban development. I'm thinking about calling one of the nearby parks and having him relocated, since the tiny wooded area is now under threat of development, and, from what I've read, he's a threat to the neighborhood pets. I have no idea how he got there or if there is a breeding population, but I'm a little worried for his sake as well, since I've also read that their pelts are worth money.

This discovery is impressive. I've waited a long time for there to be a sufficient photo taken of a fisher in the New Jersey area. This biologist should be commended for his work. I also, wish Charles Kontos continued success with this important biological study.

I am interested in seeing your article in Newsday since I saw and heard a fisher in front of my home in Hopewell NJ. It was about 2am on Memorial Day(07) when I heard this blood-curdling scream. I looked out my bedroom window and saw this scary creature, which I have since identified as a fisher cat. My one dog also saw it and hesitantly barked and the thing slinked away. I quickly ran downstairs to check on our cat, opened the front door and my cat came running in. The animal control woman apparently does not believe that they are in NJ and says she needs concrete evidence! Since my sighting a local journalist did an article and today a reporter from the NY times contacted me. I am amazed at the intrigue this animal has sparked and would love to know more.I really would love proof that they are in central NJ so this woman would take me seriously.

They have become very common in Cape Cod, MA during the last few years. If they can thrive in that densly populated area there is no reason that they will not continue to spread through all NJ.

I live in Hopewell NJ, and heard a horrible scream in the night about a month ago. I had never heard anything like it before. I went out with the dog and a flashlight to investigate, but saw nothing. A friend who lives in the woods in Amwell Twp says he occasionally hears the same kind of sound around his property. I was told it was likely a Fisher, and now I'm actively looking to see one.

I live in Neptune NJ. My husband just called me that there was a creature swimming in our pool that looked like a giant ferret. He said it took off real fast when he went to investigate the splashing. I thought he was kidding and I told him I'd look up weasels on the internet for NJ and came across this site. I had him check out the pic link above and he confirms that is what he saw. Don't want it to kill my chicken or hurt my dog (who regularly kills groundhogs in my backyard). How do we get it to go away? I don't want my dog hurt in a skirmish protecting Henny Penny.(She's treed racoons that were after Penny).

No but their pelts fetch a pretty penny from what I'm told.

No sure way to keep them away, other than shooting them. I would lock up the chicken but they won't normally try to take on a dog unless cornered.
