Stupidest thing I've ever heard! She was not a soldier or anything honorable she was a drug addicted singer.... I think it's offensive for any military personnel for this to happen.

I'm black and color does not have any thing to do with it......and unfortunately that's how white ppl think as well as black ppl the point fingers at races to try to justify ones actions but what's right is right and that's just plain old wrong and what's wrong is wrong, isn't there something written on rules and guidelines for doing that anyway, that should not be allow, nobody flew flags for Elvis, Michael or anybody else except for high ranking government officials so why her I haven't got a clue but I'm against it

I am ashamed of you, Chris Christie! My husband is an honorably discharged retiree of the U.S. Navy. It is appalling that you would even consider lowering our magnificent flag for someone who is an addict. What has she ever done to honor America?
Shame on you!!!

I would appreciate a logical explanation as to why this woman is being given this honor. I'll concede that she had the most beautiful voice of her generation but she chose to destroy it through drugs and alcohol. As others have stated, our heroes are not recognized is this manner and all this does is send a message that being a celebrity and throwing it away deserves more recognition than laying one's life on the line in defense of our country.
Governor Christie I have always admired you for taking a stand on what you considered to be the right course of action in your administation but you blew it this time!

The focus is on her and he talent; not her faults as it should be. I coomend the Governor for being respectful and not playing on her faults. If you look back at history; some of the greatest talents misused drugs. I am not condoning it, we should address that as a separate issue.

anyone can fly a flag half staff. and yes a govenor can order it. he ordered it half staffed for a personal reason, she was from that state. any citizen that loves the flag can fly at half staff. there is flag etiquette especially for the military and government...but very loose rules for the average citizen.
also the government cannot make you fly your flag at half staff therefore the government cannot stop you from flying your flag half staff.

False! Christy has no clue what he is doing. Google the list of who flying at half staff is for. It is not for entertainers. If anyone loves the flag the obey the rules of that flag of that country and stop making it up as you go along. The flag is to be honored and respected not disrespected. There is also rules of what you can do with a flag as not to desecrate the flag.

Tell that to the 3000+ dead on 9/11 and thier families. The WW2 heroes, people whom gave thier life for their government and country. It was a huge disrespect to them

http://nj.halfstaff.org/

Look at the list of NJ Half Staff dates and whom they were for.
Then you have whitney houston. That in itself, says it all.

It is not meant to disrespect those who died for our country, it is just meant to honor her.

m. The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff. By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential instructions or orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law. In the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, or the death of a member of the Armed Forces from any State, territory, or possession who dies while serving on active duty, the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff, and the same authority is provided to the Mayor of the District of Columbia with respect to present or former officials of the District of Columbia and members of the Armed Forces from the District of Columbia. The flag shall be flown at half-staff 30 days from the death of the President or a former President; 10 days from the day of death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives; from the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession; and on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress. The flag shall be flown at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day, unless that day is also Armed Forces Day. As used in this subsection

dont beat up the messenger.
like you said...the key word is "respect". and yes there is a "flag code" and there are national dates in which to fly half staffed and proper ways of doing so. but when it comes down to a governor or private citizen, yes they can fly half staffed with no disrespect to the military, dignitaries, etc.
when it comes to citizens the "flag code" only acts as a guideline to be followed voluntarily.
and no there are no penalties, fines , etc., if the rules are not strictly followed.

I think the flag being flown at half staff should be for folks that serve in office (govt, state or local) and those that have served our country who are high ranking. Not entertainers. They can honor her in other ways.
