This is the usual "cheap" places. Except these places are expensive. I know a place to stay that's half the price of the Chelsea Hotel, which is a ripoff. My advice is for people to dig deeper. You don't have to stay in the city per se either. Go upstate a bit and take the train into the city.

ya rite have to have the funds! some of the rich should help poor people out! like in east prairie,missouri. we need it.

Look for forums that have tips about inexpensive but good hostels and hotels and places to eat.

Google SleepNY Forums, they have some reviews.
