Please, people!

Rent is a great musical dealing with issues that are real and important to look at. That is what good art (and theater) does. Get a grip!

And they rejected "West Side Story" before? Why? Because of gun/gang violence? I guess Red Wing High School administrators are more interested in putting on bubble gum productions rather than award-winning shows that have something to say about serious issues.

I guess they won't be putting on South Pacific or Fiddler on the Roof - they deal with racism, after all.

Maybe they'll do "The Lion King"...no wait that has the issue of murder in it, that would be far too controversial.

There are lots of real and important issues to look at in the world, but that does not necessarly mean they should be look at via a high school spring musical. There are also award-winning shows that are much more appropriate for high school students. I would also question that award-winning does not always translate into "good". Why do some insist expiditing adulthood for our children. In addition, part of the uniqueness of our nation's school system is the individual control and community expectations. What may or may not be acceptable in Thousand Oaks, CA may or may not be in Red Wing, MN. I think that issue is left to those that operate that distict and that school.

Anyone know if the rights to "rent" are even available for high school productions? I'd think that paying for those would be reason enough to nix the production!

And how do you do a toned-down version of a song like "la vie boheme"? Change half the words? Maybe they should just do the original opera "la boheme" :)

Seasons of love is a nice song, but never saw rent myself. My son saw it and summed it up as "everybody has aids".

While the stalin-era soviets forced artists to prepare work that advanced the political objectives of the socialist state, it appears that in 21st century america, artists eagerly advance the political objectives of the socialist state without any compulsion whatsoever.

Among many, there is a sense that people are entitled to have a didactic work like rent performed in high school--that the school is doing some kind of injustice by passing on it.

Just wrap the kids in plastic bubbles to protect them from what the world is all about. It would be interesting to find out what has gone on at that school that the administration let slide through the cracks.

Banning RENT? That musical has been around for years. Up until now I thought Red Wing was one of the more enlightened small towns. Wrong again.

Everyone is welcome to the book burning this Friday night in Red Wing. It's going to be at 7:00 p.m. in front of the Sheldon Theater. Kids, bring your marshmellows! When the fire dies down, everyone will light torches and head down to the reform school and lynch a couple of inmates. Ah, Life in a Northern Town.

I'm really glad they let your son out of his special-ed class to see Rent, so he could pass on his incisive analysis. Like father, like son.

It is an aside, but I am a MN resident (despite what it says by my name on this post)originally from ND.

Can I ask what you mean by "good"? Do you mean "appropriate"? Do you mean "worthwile"? Do you mean "socially acceptable"?

The world is much more complex and complicated with teens having to deal with issues that weren't issues years ago. Perhaps we should get them talking about those issues so that they are informed and responsible.

Well, I guess this will allow all of the kid's Moms more time to take their high-school aged children to more soccer practices.

Is this really Red Wing, Minnesota or Red Wing, Alabama? I expected better in the north.

Rent sucks anyway. The whole time I was watching it all I could think was "put down the joint and get a job".

Red Wing has been a bastion of conservatism for a very long time. The only difference between Red Wing and Hastings is the county they are in. I think there is something in the water supply down river...

We need to coin a new term for people like this. The correct term would be "Liberal" (e.g. anti-establishment, esp. institutionalized religion), but it is over-used and has lost its original definition.

How about "Jades" (jaded) or "religophiles". The intolerance and lack of effort to understand organized religion and those who enjoy its benefits is becoming very sickening.

Apparently Sigh from Lakeville is the best evidence for northern liberal elitism. Up your way, the snakes don't rattle. They just strike. With the same venom. And is there anyone less accepting than a "wronged" ultra liberal?? Let the town be. It will sort this out just fine, without your guidance or mine.

If the youth of Red Wing are of great moral character, wouldn't RENT be the perfect production? You are seeing the hopes, dreams, problems, and successes of people living in a non-Red Wing way, which is interesting and thought provoking, but with such strong backbones, it wouldn't effect the behavior of the students-just foster a greater understnding.
