Wow museums, folklore, cuisine and atmosphere. Sounds like a diverse multicultural fantasy. It also sounds incredibly vibrant and productive. These are the same reasons why the Lehigh Valley has NOT progressed and will be late to the table while other areas do. We are fixated with anti-immigrant "English Only" American Chauvinist "Patriotism" we demand Conformity here and places like the Village,Chinatown,Little Italy,Wall Street,DUMBO etc. have no place here. Please keep all that color and prosperity in NYC. We dont need that stuff here besides the mainstream LV percieves NYC the way we choose to,a shooting gallery full of blacks and hispanics. Dont try and define it for us. Our world view ends at the Pa/NJ border so knock it of with stories of success, art, multiculturism, div ersity, prosperity and harmony. We know what NYC is really like so dont try to change our minds with Facts. Funnel cakes, forever!!

Good sarcasm. I do think that the vast majority of folks in the valley would like to strain out the bad from NYC and surrounds and keep the good. People will welcome anyone who acts with manners, decorum, follows the golden rule, AND does not break the law and become a threat to others' lives...

So, what you are saying is that it is WRONG for people to demand foreigners to learn the English language? Why is that? When someone is a guest in your home, do they demand YOU to conform to their styles?
If someone relocates to another area, WHY should that area conform to THEM? If I moved to Virginia, for example, I wouldn't expect or demand them to conform to MY ways. I am now living in a different area and *I* am the one whou should conform to THEIR ways.
Then again, the typical attitude of this country anymore is ME ME ME.

I whole-heartedly agree. I think people would be more open-minded to welcome others from other areas as long as they acted appropriately. Unfortunately, there are a LOT of transplants here that have ruined it by their dispositions and attitudes. A lot of them look down their noses at the locals and view us as backwoods hicks who make $8 an hour. They walk around with their noses in the air as though they are better than everyone and their crap doesn't stink.

A lot of them left the hustle and bustle of the city for affordable housing and a more relaxed lifestyle, which this area USED to offer. It has changed, though, because a lot of them brought their attitudes and their high-stress styles.

There aren't any new yorkers living in Manhattan and pretty soon there won't be any new yorkers living in the outer boroughs either. Mike Bloomberg has done a great job pricing out the crime out of the city but its also taking the middle class out with it. This will be poison to the city's tax base because the poor don't pay that much taxes and the rich always find loopholes to not pay their fare share as well. With the down turn on wall street the city's tax base will dry up.

Well, I object to you and your warped logic, now will you move to Virginia please! I'll help load the truck.
Your attitude is exactly what I mocked in my original post, too bad you are not intelligent to recognize that. Noone is advocating "English Only" in Lower Manhattan nor is anyone in LV advocating against English. Each of the ethnic groups referred to in the article have assimilated into the American mosaic WITHOUT small minded xenophobic measures like "English Only". English is entrenched as the language of business throughout the world and future generations of Americans will continue to use English as the international language. Look at all those people in NYC they came from somewhere else but they speak English now, NOT because of "English Only" because of multiculturalism and assimilation. Too bad you cant understand that, please send me a postcard from Va. We'll miss you! NOT!

Blah blah blah... Try arguing and offering a debate without looking down your nose. You might find it to be more rewarding.

Looks like you and Norbert should go bowling. You both obviously have a "more intelligent than thou" attitude. Instead of trying to make an interesting point, you do nothing but try to belittle someone elses logic or thinking. Just because someone objects to your thinking, you immediately state that the person is lacking intelligence.

Sieg Heil!

There does seem to be a similarity between what is occurring in NYC, per the article, and what we are attempting to do in Lehigh Valley. As far as the arguments in regard to the ENGLISH ONLY sentiments, attitudes of the "transplants", and the multi-cultural/diversity attitudes, the bottom line is that the CHANGE in Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton has already occurred. It's up to us to build on it and use our resources (the residents and communities) to make it better. It doesn't matter what your tax bracket is or side of town you live on, we can all still have PRIDE IN OUR COMMUNITY. Many WANT to get involved with the process but feel left out altogether. We need to change this in order to go forward...

Glad someone is continuing to take up the torch to keep the lower east side intact. The first wave of this was in the 60s when developers planned to wipe out everything. They were stopped. This is an ongoing battle. So I'm glad to see its continuing. A classic old diner run by a Greek was destroyed in recent years by a schumuckaluck. The diner offered an utterly fantastic breakfast. So the developer tore it down and then as far as I can tell never did develop the property!
