Bigotry remains

Full story: Stamford Advocate

When I moved to this area 33 years ago, I was told not to look for housing in Darien, because Jews weren't welcome.

"Liberals like me hesitate to say that the attitude towards President Obama evidenced by many on the right is colored by racism and bigotry. But if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck."

Did it ever occur to you that most people disagree with his ultra liberal policies and the radicals he has appointed as czars? Why are you playing the race card - to discourage anyone from criticizing Obama?

Its quite amusing to see the Liberals and Conservatives blame and accuse each other for Our countries ills. The reality is they both have been complicit in getting us to this point. A lack of ethics, integrity, and morality by both sides have left Us in a tough spot. Somehow we the people need to get our Governments back.Federal state and local governments are beholden to lobbyists and big financial donors . Only by controlling the power of greed, that guides our politicians can we hope for better times for our children.

First step is to go back to the Creator and get him to change human nature.

Too few of the people who want to "get our government back" actually run for public office, and those who do rarely win, and those who win end up conforming to the system.

I don't recall which Republican said it about the "class of 94", but the comment was: "We came to Washington to change it, and instead Washington changed us."

White duck or black duck, "the many" do not like this duck's policies and the path he is taking. Since you cannot accept that they have an honest disagreement with your duck, it must because "the many" are flawed by being bigots. Sounds like you are the one with the bias.

Jay, I can't believe you put your name at the bottom of that letter. You honestly believe this had anything to do with bigotry? I hope your employer doesn't read the paper because you are one clueless individual.

I get it - because you were discriminated as a Jew 33 years ago, anyone that disagrees with Obama's policies must be racist!

True darien still is very homogenuous; it is mainly socio-economic; I know many Jews who live in Darien. There are no Synagogues still and hopefully that will change. 20 years ago I was one of very few Democrats; now there are many here. can't beat the schools and the sports programs are awesome! Wish the schools would have given the kids the option of seeing Obama's speech on education.

True Darien was steering Jews away in the 40's and 50's, and this was the subject of "Gentlemen's Agreement,"starring Gregory Peck. The extent of this discrimination is somewhat in question, though I wouldn't deny some prejudice existed.

Now, to complicate matters more, Jews in towns like Westport formed exclusively Jewish enclaves and neighborhoods. This was an interesting development and raised interesting "right to association" questions. Again, I don't know the extent of the formation of these enclaves.

While the issues may be different, it does raise the question of two wrongs not making a right.

I can tell you one thing, many of the liberals and conservatives that have ruined the country have something in common, most of them are lawyers I think that is where the problem lies.
