That's crazy! I live in the Town of Newburgh and I rarely stop in the city of Newburgh if not to drop off my daughter at daycare and for church a once a week. Otherwise, I only drive through the city and I never ever hang out there.

I've started to look for a house in Newburgh. It is a tale of two cities. Some areas show great progress, others are dismal. A property I saw in the Heights has been terribly vandalized. People have used the front yard to dump TVs and other garbage that costs to dispose of, and some crackhead had set up a den in the upstairs bedroom, spent cigarette lighters and other debris left behind. If I were a neighbor in the abutting houses, I'd certainly be very, very concerned. One spark from the crack pipe and there goes the house and probably the ones next to it, if not the block. Why the owner (a bank) has virtually left these conditions to fester is part of what's wrong. It certainly put me off the Heights in that area, which is unfortunate, for the potential is great there. I hope you hang tough and conditions improve.
I think I saw this same property on Carson Street. Heartbreaking to go through a once decent home and see it reduced to this.

You really need to get a life and get off of the Prozac and booze. All you do is concur with everything negative about Newburgh. Get on the city council and voice your concerns. Stop talking about what it was in the 1950's. The world has moved on everywhere!

I lived in Newburgh most of my life. My parents owned a J.Store in newburgh for years. But before that, my mom worked at Regal Bag and my father at a bakery. I went to North High and Than NFA and so did my sibblings. The burgh was nice back than, with Woolworth on B'way, Jewelry stores in Dtown newburgh and the place was nice.Than the riots broke out, the gov't that ran Nb turned their backs on the people, drugs exploded and gangs infested the streets. Turf wars and pure hopeless filled the cities air and this is the result. Yes I have come back to the Burg, saw the water street front fixed up etc. But the side streets are still filthy, no jobs, to much drugs, gangs and corruption has not helped. NB will never improve until people start to care again. Its your city people, you have the power to fix it. Yes I'm glad I left and only return once in awhile to see friends and they are also leaving. Soon only gangs and corruption will be the make up of the city unless things change.

I've known newburgh practically my entire life. The place is a dump, simply put. I feel bad for some of the decent residents who are trapped here, few they are, and held back possibly by the increasing cost of living this city has. The cost continues to climb, and the standard of life in the city continues to plummet. What was once a beautiful city in its prime is now only a miserable shell, riddled with crime, drugs, and violence. People keep saying things have to change in order to turn this city around. If you ask me, this city is too far from being saved and is only now left on life support.

oh source: http://hudsonvalley.twcnews.com/content/news/...

for the nay sayers stupid enough to say "its an old story"

newburgh is in the top 10 every year since 2004ish..

besides, do you really need a news story to tell you newburgh sucks??

some parts are nice-er and ok-ish. but again, newburgh is nothing I would waste money or time on. The people have to change, the culture has to say "hey, instead of making 120 dollars robbing a gas station and risking 2-7 years in jail for armed robbery, assault and manslaughter.. Maybe I should get a FREE G.E.D. and then get a FREE SUNY Orange education and get a FREE 2 year associates degree. They even built a decent sized campus with brand new buildings in that shit town right next to the worst part of it, to make it easier for people of newburgh to get to and use. Instead they use it for target practice..

At what point do you say They dont deserve any help, stop wasting money and let them burn..

NO AMOUNT OF MONEY is going to help newburgh. The people, the parents, the students, the kids, the community as a WHOLE has to change..

if not, just draft them all into the army and let them kill the Taliban. At least over there they wont go to jail for shooting people, if that's all they aspire to do, PUT IT TO USE!
