Muralist to transform wall in Huntington

Full story: Newsday

When artist Garin Baker makes a mural, he wants people to stop and say, "Wow." "I'm not satisfied unless I get that reaction," said Baker, a resident of New Windsor who's created dozens of murals nationwide.

This wall mural will be a magnet for some sub-human to want to deface it with spray paint. A well publicized and prominent security camera should be part of the project's cost.

Oh great. Legalized graffiti that will do nothing other than attract more graffiti.

They should create a Silly String mural on the Petrone's garage door.

I'm not so sure about that. I've seen murals on the South Shore where I thought exactly the way you do. They've been there for quite a number of years now & haven't been defaced. Done by a different artist BTW

constant b1tching and complaining...shocking. Where are the immigrant and mastic comments that are also always prevailant?

There was a very nice mural across the street for many years as well as one in a town alley that has been there well over 25 years. None have been defaced or has graffiti. One is ols and fading, but that is time, not trouble.

This will be nic for Huntington...embrace it

I'm not saying the wall will never be "tagged" but most tagger want a clean white wall where their "tags" will stand out...it won't stand out on an elaborate mural, plus if he ruins a mural paid for by the town-he'll really bring the heat on him/herself

Im mostly for the mural and I hope to stop by for a bit and watch them paint it for a bit but I think that at this time 50K could be used for something that would benefit the town more than a mural especially since I am one of the taxpayers funding it.In a way I think its a irresponsible use of taxpayer dollars and the one(s) responsible should be questioned. No offense to the artist of course.

the town should hold a lottery and as the prizes some unspecified number of lucky winners will have their likenesses appear in the mural.

"he hopes to assemble his team of apprentices this spring through the Huntington Youth Bureau's Project EXCEL with a completion date of late summer."

What is wrong with everyone? This project is going to allow for our young people to do something nice for a change. Everyone complains about the youth, yet won't give them a chance! Think about it ... this will inspire the teens, who are chosen, to be creative and produce a work of art. Gee, maybe it will even give them some a sense of community and some experience for their future.

I think it's a great project and the money is an investment in these kids' futures. More ideas like these are needed to keep our young people involved in their communities.

Go ahead kids, show everyone here how wrong they are! Good luck and do a great job!

Sure, it would be a wonderful idea to involve the local youth in a worthwhile artistic project--that is, if we had tax monies to spare. But we don't, and so this is a huge misuse of tax dollars. As for the kids, there must be many other projects that would be equally gratifying and instructive without tapping our tax funds. Would be great if the artist and kids volunteered to do the job, or at least the artist accepting a stipend to get the kids started and them periodically oversee their work.

Topcoat the mural with anti graffiti sealer. It will protect the mural and the graffiti can be removed. Its a great opportunity for the kids who will take part in this project.
P.S. I miss Huntington greatly. wish I could come back.
