Bowling Brook was by far the best placement I was ever in from the age of 14. Easy, no. Hard, yes. GED, 9 college credits from Carroll Community College and two vocational certificates from Fredrick Community College earned in 11 months time. Doing time, no. Taking advantage of opportunity, yes. Thanks BBP for making sure I did'nt do time or waste time, but rather make time in advancing my education. Athletics help me too!

Out of boredom I googled bbp. I never expected to find this. Obviously I'm a bit late. I was there quite some time ago (2001-2002). The place was far from perfect, but it changed my life for the better. There was a core group of staff that were there to make a difference. To this day I still appreciate them (boomer, pj, corey, george, carl, matt, the other wrestling coach-can't remember the name). I left there and went to college, spent several years in the military and am now in the fire dept. None of that would have been possible without bbp. I'm sure this will go unread but on the off chance one of the fore mentioned staff members reads this, just wanted to say hello and thank you.

I was in Bowling Brook back when we lived in the old White House. Do not remember all the employees, but do remember Rick Delaney, Dane, and a guy we called Cowboy (Mike was his 1st name). All of them truly cared about making us better men and understanding that we are responsible for our actions. Sometimes our actions had consequences that we did not like, but they were a direct result of our actions. I keep these values with me today and pass these values on to my children.

Mike Sunday was there and a great guy. Although he was more administrative he always had time for all of us. Although he could not really throw a football (haha) I remember he hoped one day to implement Athletics in to Bowling Brook.

My curiosity led to me researching and finding this blog. I find it terrible that things turned out the way they did for Bowling Brook. I know when I was there that Mike Sunday and his staff always wanted what's best for the kids and would never put a kid or encourage that a kid be put in harms way. I do not have all the facts of what occurred that caused kid's injuries or death, or the closing of Bowling Brook. I can say without a doubt that i never witnessed any physical abuse. I do not believe that would have ever been the intent of Mike Sunday or any of the aforementioned staff. For me, this was a last chance. Bowling Brook or get locked up. It was structured and strict, but it was better then the alternative. It gave me a chance, can that be said for incarceration? Bowling Brook was voluntary, if you did not want to participate and commit to becoming better, then Bowling Brook did not accept you. It's a choice you make.

With that being said I would like to close this comment with a thank you to Mike Sunday, Mike Piavis, Rick Delaney (RIP), and Dane (can't remember the last name, maybe Colbert) for assisting in turning my life around, teaching me responsibility, and showing me that I have choices. I would not be where I am today without your guys influence on my life.

Does anyone not know that Bowling Brook in Keymar MD has been closed since 2007, give it a break.

Silver Oak Academy is a wonderful School that has taken over the grounds of the old Bolingbrook.
This School provides education. change of life skills and sports in a safe environment.

I have volunteered at this school with many others for many years. Please come and visit us. most parents are grateful their child was sent here by the court system. The children learn Respect, Attitude, motivation and Service to others. Which is what we all need to learn. I am so proud to know and appreciate these Gentlemen as well as the business men and woman they are currently working for. Along with going to Collage, attending classes and working jobs, these Gentlemen shine. Residence of this area have them in their homes to help put and do things they may never have had the chance to try.

These boys have attended and helped out at many of our town and church functions, you probably thought they were the most polite gentlemen you had ever meet. They do service time help at many of the neighbors along with cooking and service for several of the local Lions Clubs, Government
Groups. Every year they Walk a Mile in Her Shoes for Rape Crisis, they participate every year with
The Cancer Relay and this year helped earn $43,000 for Carroll County outside Westminster.

When they leave Silver Oak Most of the receive Scholarships and go on to collage, many of they choose to stay in the area as they say with good people who like them. Several are working Locally, have married and even have children.

Please don't misjudge them until you meet them then make a decision.

I can only hope it will be like mine. They are a great addition to out town and to us personally.

I dont know if anyone will see this or not. It's been a long time since anyone has posted on here, but I wanted to speak up. I just recently became aware of what happened to BBP. In no way did it surprise me. I was only there for 3 mos and my state pulled me out bc of the treatment there. I reported to my state workers from the beginning that it was an abusive environment and that staff went way beyond the legal boundaries of juvenile safety laws. I was quickly punished for reporting these these things but I eventually prevailed in at least getting myself out of there. I always knew something like this would eventually happen there and I'm sorry that it cost a young man's life to finally end this place. I hold all staff accountable for all of the abuses that went on there. The ones that didn't do it directly, openly condoned it. All the way up to the highest administration. This easily could have been prevented if a culture of intimidation and abuse hadn't been fostered there. I reported these things all the way back in 1998. I have no good things to say about "the brook" or anyone who supports or defends it. I am almost 37 and I still haven't forgotten what I saw & experienced there. It was an evil place, staffed by evil or simple minded and mean spirited people. I wish my voice would've been heard when I spoke against this place all of those years ago. I'm not sure what impact, if any, that writing this will have; but I felt it needed to be said. From what I've read already, most of the old staff I knew there haven't changed much and are still regurgitating the same old bowing brook propaganda and saying it was a good place. I'm not surprised, but I was disappointed to see it. I can only pray for the strength to stop thinking about & spiting this place so much.

"The Brook" helped me a lot. Made me grow up and be accountible for my actions. Have to admit I struggled a lot at the start of my stay at BBP. My counsellors and teachers and coachs never gave up on me. Now that I am older, I apreciate that support even more. Lookin back, it be cool to know that the Thorobreds compeeted against MELO and Larry Fitzgerald. Academics and school and sports and good conduct were always important to THE BROOK. Thank you Bowling Brook Prep for all your help and support.
