An American Bulldog is not a Pitbull. My neighbor breeds hers and so far I've only seen gentle dogs. All dogs are animals, and capable of a bite or attack. Personally, I've got 2 lab mixes. One I trust 99.99%, the other, I don't trust nearly as much.

This is a horrible event and extremely unusual. It makes me wonder if he was completely sober or drug free during the attack and why an adult man could not fight off a dog. I hope he has a speedy recovery and the dog should definitely be destroyed.

FYI- The American Bulldog IS NOT a Pit Bull, if you did a little research you would know that.
In a 20 yr. study of fatal bites/attacks, the top breed responsible was the Labrador- again look it up.
The French woman's dog was also a Lab, amazing how people think only Pits are capable of biting/killing people.*PUNISH THE DEED, NOT THE BREED*

'Pitbulls' are any combination of dog bred to fight. AKC or any other recognized association of dog breeds have no dog classified as a pitbull. American Bulldogs, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Rottweillers, might be used in the breeding programs because of their incredibly powerful jaws, but none of them are 'pitbulls' without training. Sober/drug free...are you cracked? You can't "fight off" a dog--they know no boundaries in a blood fight. It is NOT extremely unusual. There are thousands and thousands of dog attacks a year. Many are unrecorded-dogs leaving yards and attacking pedestrians, etc.

An attack is an attack. Any dog who shows aggression should be put down. You CANNOT "save" a dog. They cannot speak or be reasoned with. All breeds are dangerous when provoked and many unprovoked. Although "provoked" is the operative word here, it makes no difference. Once a dog attacks, you can't go back.

This dog was saved and nearly killed.

You can actually fight off a dog to a large extent. I was an animal control worker for several years and was attacked numerous times and sustained numerous bites from everything from Akitas to Chow Chows to Westies.
I would let them get a good grip on my arm and then I would elevate them and slam them to the ground on their spine. If that didn't take the fight out of them, I would straddle them and shove my forearm against their throats until they stopped their aggressive actions.
Push come to shove, you do what you would do if a human were pummelling you. You go to the ground and tuck your head into your arms and stay in a tight fetal position covering your throat and face. You will still get bit up like no tomorrow, but you won't lose your face over the deal.

I see ads in the paper all the time of "pit bull puppies $100" -- they have no background other than it was 2 pit bull types bred together and people go and buy themselves a puppy and it grows up to be batsh*t crazy. Yet all these idiots scream about how they should have the right to own whatever they want, that Weiner dogs bite more than pits, blah, blah, blah. Tell that to the woman whose arm is being amputated by her son's pit bull.

All dogs bite - no one is questioning that. However, these types of dogs do the most MAIMING, MAULING, AMPUTATION, DEATH.

Famous last words of owners "He never acted like this before!" Well, duh, if he had, would you have kept him? It only takes one time for that dog to go crazy on you and you will not be able to stop it.

Apparently, you and I AGREE on the future status of a dog that attacks with this level of malice, but the average weight of an American Bulldog is 55 pounds and if you are a 130lb plus, healthy male and sober, you should be able to escape the jaws of a deranged dog. Even in a deep sleep, woken with the first bite, the impulse to flee have allowed our species to survive over 60,000 years. Their are definitely circumstances to this story that are not being acknowledged and not remembering what happened by the victim is a significant factor.

The only fact you acknowledge in your opinion is ignorance. Any dog that is mistreated has great potential to misbehave and that is any type of dog including hounds, working dogs, terriers, toys, sporting dogs, herding dogs, and non sporting. If a dog is not properly socialized or given an opportunity to perform it's bred traits that are instinctive and inherent to it's type, they will become aggressive. In most cases, the breed type, classified and stigmatized by the public as 'pitbulls' are owned by morons who do not have any dog knowledge other then what they learn from other morons who should not be allowed to own this powerful breed type or allowed to have children for that matter. Their idea of training is limited to chaining them up, and treating it like an extension of their anger and frustration, allowing the dog to learn that aggression is the desired outcome. With a better environment, dogs that are nurtured and trained have a much better chance of domestication. The only disclaimer I would make is that some dogs, regardless of breed or nurturing have chemical imbalances or other physiological, psychological dispositions that are unmanageable and should be destroyed and not allowed to breed.

What a terrible, sad event. All anyone can do to when it comes to trying to figure out how this happened is to speculate. Not even the man attacked can recall what happened. Here is a possibility? The dog owner is a 53 year old male making him the prime age for suffering a heart related event. Being there was a thump sound followed by no human screams or audible struggle I wonder if the dog owner suffered a medical event that caused him to loose consciousness. This would explain the dog's agitated state and ability to get at the man's face. Again, mere speculation on my part.

"Truth Missle's" comments are mean and insensitive. What we do know about the dog owner is that he is the type of guy who is nice enough to go to a shelter to adopt a dog. Geez, can't you be nicer "Truth Missle?"

I am sure muzzles are still sold, so if you want to love your dog do it, but muzzle the cur. They will get used to it. This keeps them from baking too. Declaw the beasts too.
Create a diaper for them so we have no smelly dog poop areas. Humans really do not need dogs but dogs need humans so control them.
As for this guy who knows what he was up to, but dogs attack children daily.
