Advocate staff report
Published: Jun 9, 2010 - UPDATED: 2:47 p.m.

LETTSWORTH ó A 2-year-old girl was killed this morning after she was ejected from a car that ran off a road, went through a ditch, and rolled over on La. 1, the State Police said in a news release this afternoon.

Keondre Edwards of Simmesport was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pointe Coupee Parish Coronerís Office, Troop A spokesman Russell Grahamís news release says.

Edwards and another child in the car, a 3-year-old girl, were both in the back seat of the car and were not buckled or in child safety seats, Grahamís release says.

Both children were ejected as a result of the crash.

Troopers suspect that both alcohol and speed were factors in the crash, Grahamís release says.

Troopers responded to the scene of the crash about 7 a.m., Grahamís release says.

An investigation revealed that Ashley Jones, 25, of Simmesport was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Impala north on La. 1 when she entered a left-hand curve and ran off the road to the right.

The 3-year-old child suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Avoyelles General Hospital, Grahamís release says.

Jones was also transported to Avoyelles General Hospital with serious injuries.

According to state law, it is the driverís responsibility to ensure that children under the age of 13 is properly secured in the vehicle, Grahamís release says.

Troopers have submitted a sample of Jonesí blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.

Jones was booked today with careless operation and two counts of failure to restrain a child, Grahamís release says.

More charges may follow, pending the outcome of toxicology tests, Grahamís release says.

I dont drink and drive (if the driver proves to be DUI)) however I didnt always wear my seat belt before one actually saved my life. I was involved in a head on collision and survived(wreck was not my fault) while the other driver was killed.(no seatbelt).

The difference between LIFE and DEATH by taking 3 extra seconds to BUCKLE UP. We can make that decision for ourselves but a 2 and 3 year old cannot! WTF! Sad and pathetic. Buckle up People! It can save YOUR LIFE! or at least save your FACE and BODY from preventable horrifac surgeries scars!!!

Yeah right, because I'm so sure if PRS was back I'm sure he would have been there to keep this from happening. My goodness, if he has the power to prevent accidents then why isnt he using this amazing superpower for the good of all mankind??

Is he magically there at everyone's house to make sure kids are in car seats before they get on the road? Is he magically at accidents to catch children ejected in accidents? Well, why not?

If he were in office then you think stupid people would suddenly become responsible and not speed? This accident was caused by a parent's thoughtless and neglectful actions, not the lack of PRS in office.

So are you really saying that NO ONE died in an accident while he was in office?

Sorry ,but to say that PRS in office would magically keep people from dying in car accidents is just asinine. It doesnt help his campaign when his supporters appear on every topic and proclaim that these things wouldnt have happened if he were in office. If he is that freaking omnipotent then why isnt he out saving the whole world?

I have nothing against PRs but when his supporters keep posting stuff like this then it makes me not really care for PRS.

It is sad that a child died and you are just using that for a reason to promote PRS. Shame on you.

Very true indeed, but in light of the Victoria Gosserand wreck where she killed the other woman, why didn't Bud create an aggressive ad campaign to warn and educate the people of Pointe Coupee about drinking and driving and the tragic outcome of it? Why didn't he create an aggressive ad campaign to warn the citizens of PC about the dangers on False River and encourage people to wear a life vest and not drink and pilot a boat? Didn't see anything in the Banner. Didn't really see anything on the Bud Torres Show except for a casual statement on Drinking and Driving and a school function where the host of the Bud Torres Show interviewed another victim. Who was the real spotlight on in that interview? I just don't see any real effort to educate the public on anything from this administration. I do stand to be corrected, I just don't see these things.

How stupid do you have to be to not put your child in a car seat?? Do we really need the sheriff to go around telling people to use common sense? There was nothing you could tell this lady that would make her take care of her kids.

Do you really think that an ad campaign would have changed this woman's behavior? Are there people that don't know how dangerous drinking and driving is?

This person is selfish and irresponsible and has now killed a child. No television commercial would have changed the outcome of this crash.

It would be beneficial to spay an neuter a portion of our community, as well.

Maybe if our elected officials stop fixing tickets for votes some of these ignorant people would rethink breaking the laws. Too often I see kids standing in the front seat of a moving vehicle without any type of restraint. It doesn't take away from personal responsibility, but it may help reduce these types of incidents. Just my thoughts.

Do you think people that are too dumb to use a child restraint have enough stroke to get a ticket fixed? I've seen officers pass by those cars on a number of occasions. I'd immagine that if they were ticketed enough, it may go down.

Has anyone ever heard of a child seat violation being fixed? I understand speeding tickets being fixed, but child endangerment?

Yeah....ok....Why didn't PRS do all of that when he was in office? People died in this parish when he was sheriff too. Oh, wait a minute, did he prevent all people from dying in this parish when he was "king"?...I mean sheriff? You PRS supporters are so freaking funny! LOL
