ARABI A five-year-old boy received 32 stitches and will require plastic surgery after he was attacked by a neighbor's pit bull while in his family's driveway Thursday night.

The boy, whose name wasn't released by the Sheriff's Office, was treated at Tulane Medical Center after the incident in the 2200 block of Mehle Avenue in Arabi and has been released, St. Bernard Parish Chief Deputy Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

According to Pohlmann, the boy was outside playing with his Godfather in their driveway, when the pit bull, which was running free at the time, attacked the boy, biting him in the face before his Godfather hit the dog several times to get him to let go.

The dog's owner, Rosalie Aguilar, 47, who said the animal had never hurt anyone before, was cited by parish animal control officers for allowing the seven-month-old male pit bull to run free.

Beth Brewster, director of animal control, said the owner signed the dog over to the parish and because he would be deemed vicious and non-adoptable because of the unprovoked attack, the animal will be held 10 days and then euthanized.

It just amazes me that people let these Pitt Bulls around children. A friend of mine told me he had a friend pull in his driveway the other day with 2 Pitt Bulls in the back of his truck. He said his friend wanted to know if he could let the dogs out to play in his yard while they visited on his Porch. He told him NO. He said he just didn't feel comfortable with his two little girls 4 and 7 playing in the yard with the Pitt Bulls. Talk about an understatement. When are people going to realize how dangerous these dogs really are? The Pitt Bull is not the only dangerous dog I know, but in my book it's at the Top of the List.

Staci says that once again some idiot owner cannot take the time to keep his/her dog properly restrained/contained. Had this dog not been allowed to be running loose, then this horrible incident would have never happened.

As for the dog, it needs to be euthanized.

Anything else?

But what is a "pit bull"? You do realize that it is NOT a specific breed of dog, do you not?

As for your feelings, you are entitled to them. I do not like Labrador Retrievers, Dachshunds, Pomeranians, or Chihuahuas (mind you all of these breeds are also responsible for fatal maulings of humans).

As for the child in this incident, I pray that he has a quick recovery and my heart breaks that he has had to endure this. It's not fair.

And yet this is way people need to speak out on enforcing leash laws and holding the OWNERS accountable especially financially since that is where it hurts the most for these irresponsible dog owners.

So true Staci, people need to realize, it's the owner's responsibility to keep his dogs contained.

I'm still waiting for some sort of intelligent post from you. All you do is go around trying to bait people and deflecting questions. I don't play those games so consider this reply to you the last.

Staci, hope u stick around long after this situation is over!!! I used to have respect for juror Russell Young. But I gather he is ignorant although he thinks he is doing good. He is playing cards, u c , at a table where his uncle, andouille, is kickin his but. POLITICALLY!! I know it sounds crazy. But true!

Does anyone know if the dog owner will be charged. Under the Luna McDonald / Blaise Landry law, the owners should be cited and pay a fine and/or a jail sentence for allowing their dog to attack a person.

My prayers go to the young child and hope he will heal. This is a terrible thing for a child to endure.

People need to realize that they have to be responsible for containing their animals.
