Too many hands in the cookie jar, What a shame people do not think they will be discovered?? Don't like thieves.

Opportunity makes a thief. Obviously, there were no controls...checks by one or more fire dept. people on how their funds were being managed.

This happens with every volunteer fire company. Stop giving them money. Take a look at the kind of people that hang out there and live. Make all fire firefighters paid jobs and you would get rid of all these clowns and thiefs that only want to run things so they can get their hand in the cookie jar.

Yep... it is a shame. Although not quite so much went missing from another company about a year and a half ago. It was thought that checks and balances were in place, but turns out, you can't trust ANYONE but yourself. Interstingly, no full investigation was even done. MANY people were not "talked to" or provided an opportunity to confirm or deny information. And, several of what I would call prime suspects all of a sudden had new "things" at their homes. The ones who ran the show and were NOT guilty have been ostrisized. If you don't have PROOF, keep your mouth SHUT.

A fairly broad generalization. There are unscrupulous people in all avenues of life. Should there have been controls yes, are all volunteers corupt like these individuals apparently are, I don't think so. Without volunteers so many organizations would cease to exist.

Remember Public. Midway does not provide Fire Service. They are not even dispatched. That had been in effect now for years. Cman keep your hand off the keyboard until you learn the facts. Do not put this department in the same category with the Volunteer Fire Departments that serve the community.

You're an idiot and NO, it does not happen at ALL volunteer departments and sure, go ahead and push for an all paid department and see what happens to your taxes, dolt!!!

I Do know the facts and I have seen this happen in this area many times especially at the Saint Thomas fire hall. Every 5 yrs or so they bust some one for taking money from their fire company funds. I am not saying all volunteers are bad but did you ever take a look at the majority of these volunteers. They need to employ a way to screen these people by their credit reports and such and they would not have these problems. Just because you want to volunteer does not make you a good volunteer. Screen these people before you let them run your fire company.

Im confused. Can someone please help me understand?

They stole $44,000 but on out on bail for $10,000??
So, if this is correct they made $34,000?? Or since the couple are charged individually they made $24,000???

Cman. Sounds like your a perfect candidate to start that push. Volunteer Fire Departments doing credit checks. Your crazy. It is bad enough that some has started doing back round checks.

Your giving volunteer fire departments a bad name. Go ahead and count how many departments you have read about and take into consideration how many departments are in operation.

I bet you hear about more employees stealing from walmart or kmart more than volunteer fire departments.

DDP. I dare you to google "volunteer fire company thefts" and you will be amazed how many stories there are across america of this. And there are far more people that go in and out of stores each day so you are going to hear about this more but which percentage is higher. i would bet on the fire companies with far less people invloved.

i guess to date you could say they are up $24K. but with upcoming legal proceedings, lawyer fees, fines and/or imprisonment, restitution etc...they will be in the hole. that's if the justice system does its part correctly....which is a whole other subject.

Cman,

But YOU said it happens at them ALL, your words not ours!

And yes, it does happen many times, but it's not as widespread and rampant as you make it out to be!

Look at PA alone, there are over 2500 volunteer fire departments alone, so take another look!

And yes, there needs to be much more accountibility of the monies by the VFD's to their respective local government, but you're assumption is painting a false picture and giving the many, many volunteers and departments that do do "it right" a bad name and bad PR!!

You also pushed for full time departments, not sure of why, but in some areas it's not needed and many areas simply can't afford it!

I don't understand your post. What do you mean they are a fire company but they do not provide fire service and they aren't dispatched. I don't mean to sound stupid but whats the point of them then. Also, I never did hear about how the theft at St. Thomas turned out. There needs to be more accountability and checks and balances at these places.

Way to go public opinion, pretty good job at making the general public feel like the moneies they donate to these VOLUNTEER departments are being mishandled. Hmmm, maybe they should all pool together and sue the Public Opinion for the funding they are going to miss out on because of your trash rag. Poor example of a newspaper. You weren't playing around when you named your paper. Its Definatley an opinion. But you know how that saying goes, everybody has one. Haha now you got mine. Douche bags. If you don't like what I have to say lets just say were even.

Just because someone has bad credit doesn't mean they are going to steel money from you....you ARE an IDIOT!! What you said is stereotyping....I'm sure there are a few skeletons in your closet too.
