If you can avoid going thru New Orleans either by bus or by train

New Orleans is interesting in that it has its Greyhound & Amtrak stations in one terminal. I recently took Amtrak thru & then had a Greyhound connection out the following morning.
The problem is that the Amtrak train came in real late, around midnight. My bus was out for like 7 in the morning. I thought, ok, no big deal, I'll stay in the terminal & wait it out.
Oh boy was I wrong. The security guard came thru & threw every single Greyhound person out of the terminal without batting a lash. Out, onto the streets of New Orleans, the murder capital of the south. If you plan on going thru on Amtrak & have a connection/layover make damn sure that you have a hotel booked because they will boot you in the morning. And then let you back in @ 5am, it makes no f*cking sense but next time I travel thru I will go out of my way to avoid going to this city.
Whatever the city was before Katrina is gone. They've replaced their "Big Easy" nature with snotty selfish money grubbers. If you plan on partying go to Vegas. New Orleans isn't worth to spit on any more.
If you have an Amtrak layover make sure you connecting train is less than 11 hrs away or they will boot you out into the night, with all the mentally ill & deranged hobos & random street criminals. I was hassled by 3 different bums for money while waiting on the bench outside the bus station, terrified I was going to get robbed.
Avoid that place like the plague.

I have relatives who moved out to Kenner to get away from the city. Its absolutely ridiculous. San Antonio, a city 3 or 4x the size of New Orleans doesn't have half the murder rate of this city or even the sheer number of murders. Much less the random targeting of tourists or random people coming to & from work.

But if you have a Greyhound or Amtrak layover holy sh*t do not stay there. The maniac lesbian security guard will toss you out while letting a few of the Amtrak people stay. I think Amtrak has a contract with them or something that allows you to stay if you have a connection. But even then if your connection is more than 11 hrs they kick you out saying "the terminal is not a hotel." As if staying in their goofy bus terminal for 4 hrs from 1 to 5am is going to melt the floors.

Every other son of a b*tch now walks around the tourist area hustling for tips as street performers. You have that everywhere but its an art form in the city now. That's how bad the economy is. But they aren't even overly talented or funny, its just stupid.

The strip bars are over priced, the women not that hot, the drinks are jacked up 2, 3 times higher than other regional tourist trap prices -- I dunno. You better plan plan when you go there. The whole city is designed to suck you dry of money. That's the best way I can describe it.
