I learned something new today. A friend said a Canada newspaper recently published an article about a meteor exploding in New Martinsville. Was anyone else here aware of this local history?

"On March 10, 1897, a meteor exploded over the town of New Martinsville, West Virginia. The noise of the explosion resembled the shock of a heavy artillery salute and was heard for a distance of 20 miles. The explosion caused fragments of rock to fly in all directions. One man was knocked down by the force of air as it flew by him, rendering him unconscious. A fragment of the meteor crushed the head of one horse while rendering the horse in the next stall stone deaf."

I saw one one night around 1981 on simpson hill in pine grove. I was dark, i saw it, was small, about the size of a baseball but it was on fire. I saw where it landed, i standing about 100 feet from where it hit but I never went looking for it, it was on someone else's property.

How interesting! No I never heard about this! It is a bit of trivia many would like to be aware of. In what context was this Canadian newspaper relating this?

Really why would you not hustle right over and look at it, after all it was late and it was dark, and you never told the property owner either... Odd
