We just found out and I mean found out, not notified like you would expect, that Norfolk Southern will start knocking down houses on the properties (8)that have a purchased. Yes, it is legal but is it right? I think the people of New Market deserve more consideration and respect. Norfolk spokesman won't comment other than to say, "NS doesn't comment on real estate" So far,
NS hasn't commented on anything other than to imply they can do anything they want, anywhere they want, to anyone they want. That would be true, if we let them. The only for sure thing at this point is, if we don't stand up and stop them now, we will be in a world of hurt.

You got that right. Norfolk Southern just needs the tax payers in Jeff. Co. to spend 24 million dolars to build the new roads and "flyovers". Why should our hard-earned tax money go to pad the pockets of a big corporation like Norfolk Southern?

The intermodal yard will be in new market with the blessings of state and federal politicians and monies. You need to start THINKING about what can you get from them before it is built?
Examples:
Have NS, the state and feds provide all monies to this project with NO Jefferson county taxpayers monies spent on this project.
Have NS pay for a new elementary school in a new location.
Be sure the roads are enviromentally and safe in placement.
Buffer zones for noise.
etc etc etc
Think Think Think about it before they just come in and build it. bLook at what has be done at other intermodal facilities built and don't settle for less.

Don't think that we have the ability to make any of those calls. This is bigger than all of us in this county.

Its a done deal, there will be an Interstate highway from I 40 to New Market, it will be I 475. Talk of building the rail yard somewhere else in
jefferson County was just a smoke screen by politicians, that has been the way things go here. We will just have to accept it but just be careful who you vote for from now on.

Bring it on. Jefferson County needs it. I hope it runs right through the Niceley farm.

I-475 is in Georgia. I guess you were joking. Anyhow, the new road is going to be a four lane highway that with be a new exit off the interstate and head directly toward new Market Intermodal site. If you know where Whitaker road is then follow it from 11E back toward the ridge between New Market and the Interstate. The propsed four lane will cross the ridge near Rhodes Road and Russell Gap and then head over to the new exit between Deep Springs exit and Sevier Exit (both these exits are going to be widened and improved). There is also a plan to widen 25-70 to provide more shoulder and widen Deep Springs as well, so basically there will be optional routes to go into New Market from the insterstate. The study is complete and TDOT already has the site proposals drawn up.

Some of you think this is funny. Ha-Ha. Done deal, it's the Feds, it's the Railroad-and best of all it will screw up Niceley's farm! Yup lays out the plan that was devised decades ago. The reasoning and purpose is outdated. If our politicians can't come up with something new, that actually makes sense in this millennium then they should be 'tied to the tracks' or the very least, voted out. If you think any of the above notions make good sense for Jeff Co and the people that live here, you don't really understand what this means and how it will turn 'us' into just one big truck stop along the highway. This is going screw up much much more than the Niceley's farm. What do you have to loose? Think real hard about it.

If someone wants to tear any building down on their property they have that Right under the constitution and it's amendments.

Most are willing to sell, and it looks as if it is going to happen so lets ask them for some things in exchange for the community to say OK.

-A minumum wage of $12.50 or $13 an hour w/ benifits for workers at the site and all who work at the Distribution center who use this site.
-Construction companies must be local to Knoxville and Jefferson County.
-Intermodel workers should be local/ within 15-20 mile to apply for work.
-NS should sponser charity events for the Town of New Markets.
-Help fund the New Market Fire Department since they will be covered by it. 35-45%

I agree that Jefferson County should not have to pay for allowing NS to come in, because we can not even pay for a new high school. Our county administration is pretty messed up.
I hate to see good farm land become industrialized but 81 jobs for certain and the possibility of 100's more is hard not to consider.

Does no one remember the TVA dams, did they not just take all the farmland they wanted and flood it for lakes when they built them? IS THIS NOT THE SAME???

NO, THIS IS NOT THE SAME. TVA built the dams to prevent flooding, which was a massive problem in the Tennessee Valley and provide electricity. This had a direct effect on millions of Americans and eventually helped win World War II. It was a public service for the public good. Yes, they flooded entire communities and displaced thousands of people, but in the end it worked out and is still working.
Now, the intermodal is a PRIVATE company coming in to take private land with your tax dollars so they can make a profit. They only care about Norfolk Southern. They don't care about you, the farmers, the community of New Market or anyone or anything else. All they care about is the miliionds this will hopefully bring in for THEM! It only benefits Norfolk Southern.
All this beautiful picture that Norfolk Southern is painting about all these great jobs and money it will bring in is PURE PROPAGANDA! They can not guarantee a darn thing! In fact, some of the intermodal facilities fail economically and sit as rusted ruined brown fields.
The people on this forum who keep saying "a train is coming, deal with it" and that they are glad have the wool pulled over their eyes. They are either dumb uneducated rednecks drooling at a possible union job or they are somply ignorant trouble makers.
Unfortunately, the intermodal is coming, but it's not going to have the support they want it to have. They will never be welcome in New Market and New Market citizens will ALWAYS remember who destroyed their town!

Could you name a few of these rusted abandomed intermodal rail yards. I do not know of any and have been a RailFan for over 60 years. Norfolk Southern is a railroad and this country cannot survive without the railroads. The country would collapse without them. They have plans to keep up with future needs and New Market intermodal yard is just one of many that will be built no matter who dislikes it. It is called progress. Get on board or get out of the way because that big black train is coming.

Just because some like the idea of the intermodal moving to New Market does not make them blind sheep who lack an education. It may mean that they are interested in a future with Jefferson county is better suited to grow in the future.

I grew up on a farm in NC that is now an industrial area that is meeting the needs of 200+ families. I look at that land and think of how we supplied a good to those around us through agriculture and how it today is still being used to serve the good of that little town I grew up in.

We leave in a important cross roads within East TN and the US. Where materials and goods can be shipped to at least 5 large metropolitan areas within 3-4 hr.
This is too key of an area to fail as a intermodal location.

Hey Rail Fan Be! You must not be from around here! Would you please be nicer to my neighbors and stop saying "get on board or get out of the way."? B/C NS is not going to take anyone's land.

Hell NO, it's not the same ! TVA was another fine idea, paid for by the US government to make jobs to put people to work. And it did put people to work. And it did bring electricity to rural America. And it now is sucking the life out of the American's who are paying through the nose, just to keep the heat in their homes.
They have grown into a colossal waste of taxpayers dollars, who also pay fortunes in electric bills, every month. They did take land as recently as 1980, Tellico Lake, yes that was a true necessity, especially if your from up North. They lied and stole the property from country folk and now they want to rule with an iron fist and a limitless credit card we get to pay for. The have at least twice the amount of people on the payroll, necessary to operate. All overpaid, arrogant, and ignorant. CFO over 1 million a year. CEO over 2 and up to 4 million a year. Plus bonuses we can't imagine. Not to mention over 2 BILLION on Watts Bar for that little Ash Spill contamination. And the day after in happened they announced that the consumer will pay the damn bill ! Get ready it's coming. Nothing about insurance or why it happened, right after an inspection and warning or who was responsible, the only thing they knew was who was going to pay for it. And it is Not cleaned up yet ! What in the hell could Norfolk Southern do that would cost 2 billion dollars to clean up ? They are a private company, been around a few years, paid a ton of people a damn fair wage and spectacular retirement, and turned a fine profit. And they don't get billions per year to operate from the taxpayers.
So actually they are nothing like TVA. TVA sucks and I could only wish I could work for the railroads. Y'all think about that, at least the taxpayer isn't on the hook for the investment, and the payroll, and the screw-ups. And it will bring more jobs in the future.

There you go with that "big black train is coming"coming crap. Those facilities above shut down just last year. All intermodal facilities. Of course, they are all different companies other than Norfolk Southern, but who is to say anything will last.
Thanks fo the elemtary economic lesson too. Doesn't take a genius to figure it out, but thanks anyway. Maybe you can get you one of those big wonderful jobs they say they are going to bring to New Market when that "big black train" comes to town.
I'm not against progress, but I am against putting a industry in the middle of the country, in the middle of farms and taking good land and people's homes. There are plenty of other places to put one without tearing lives apart.

So, what if we say NO they can't take our land and we will not sell it. What then? Then they will take it! According to most on this board it is a done deal wether we want it here or not. It's easy to sing the praises when it's not your home or farm that has been in your family for generations being ripped out from under you. If it does come I hope it fails. I hope it brings nothing but misery. Look at the other sites Norfolk Southern has done the same thing. They don't care about the people it affects. All they care about is making their money moving cargo. Don;t build it on industrial land or in an industrial park! No!!! Build it right smack in the middle of the country on perfect agricultural real estate and screw the lives of thousands of people around it.
Norfolk Southern didn;t show us any respect when they came here and ran their mouths off. They give you the cookie cutter statement and smirk and tell you, "well, it's a done deal" and leave.
I do not and will never support the Norfolk Southern Railyard in New Market!

Norfolk Southern requested an 8 million transportation stuy an got it last year (TAXPAPER MONEY)
Norfolk Southern has asked Jefferson County to pay at least 30 million in development, environmental and permit costs in the development of the New Market Rail Yard (TAXPAYER MONEY)

So, don';t go running your mouth saying they aren't taking tax paper money. Hell yes they are and it's not billions, but millions. A private company of theives stealing our tax dollars to roll in the dough.
Yeah, you can go work for the union rail yard and become another theif stealing land from hard working people. Stelaing homes ffrom people who worked their entire life for. Stealing memories and dreams.
Norfolk Southern can rot in hell! They only care about themselves.
