Back in the 80's my husband & i was watching some show on Tv, we lived a long way from here & they had a deal about years & years & years ago this little boy was out playing with his dog well his dog fell in this big deep hole in the ground, and the hole had never been there before, well the dog was growling & acting all crazy, so the boy ran & got his dad & people around the town, and they could hear noises coming from the hole, well this one man offered to be lowered down in it, so the men done it well they said they heard the most horrible moans & screams so they pulled him up, said the man would just stair into space he wouldn't say nothing or do nothing, they had to put him away...Said what ever he had seen drove him crazy.. Well I few days they went back where the hole was & it was gone, vanished .... They said it was near New Madrid But it was many many many years ago...Has anyone any info about this?????

My husband thinks it was Unsolved Mysteries some kind of show like that. But it was suppose to be true. Believe it was in the 20's or 30's that it happened. So maybe some one elderly would know, or had heard about it. I am curious too, that is why I posted it.

This sounds like a combination of various folklore and urban legends, main ones being "a hole to hell" and a new take on "the mystery of David Lang"

The story of the hole to hell most recently comes out of Siberia, where supposedly researchers dug so deep they found a chamber into hell. They lowered a mic and heard screaming and moaning and other aweful sounds. Well, needless to say it has absolutely no truth to it. Stories of random holes where one can hear the cries of pain from hell has been around for centuries. It is nothing more than a story told to scare children, or in the case of the Siberian hole, a propaganda tool used by over-zealous Christians to prove hell. Of course, when they realize the story is false it is quite comical how they back track. The story of David Lange is about a farmer who supposedly fell into a hole and disappeared, followed closely by the hole itself. It is also a legend that can be found in various places, with the name substituted along with minor differences. In the case of David Lang, it was proven later to be a hoax, and nothing more than the imagination of a one Stuart Palmer, who based it off of a story by someone else.

Just like the "Farrenburg Light", these local myths and legends are nothing more than silly stories fueled by over active imaginations and faulty memories.

Myth or not, TEF, I love these old stories. I remember as a child sitting sspellbound to the older folks telling their tales. It was a means of scaring us to death and also entertaining us. Nonetheless, there was no harm done and it helped to pass the time. I had never heard about "the Hole" nor have I been to check on the Farrenburg Light, but I do believe that people have seen something there, but probably has a logical explanation. But, hey, look at the entertainment it has provided. Stimulates the imagination. By the way, TEF, I am wondering where you went to school and college. Or, are you just a library of information?

I never said these stories were bad. I actually believe quite the opposite. They are fun to tell and to hear. My only problem is when people seperate from the fun and try to turn these stories in to some kind of reality, like they actually happened.

Graduated from NMCC, went on to SMS for a year, then decided I'd try the Marines. Now that I am out, I am going to go back to school. As far as being "a library of knowledge" lol, I do read quite a bit. One of the greatest misconceptions today is that you need to go to school to learn. You only go to school to get a degree, you can learn all on your own.

Yes, you are right about the "learning". Except there are areas of employment that require hands on "learning".LOL I so enjoy reading, and I am as curious as a cat. When I get something on my mind, I just have to look it up or it won't leave me alone. Learning, however, is a wonderful experience. I can get lost in a book and am very versatile in the books I chose to read. If I like it, I read it. I do wish more young people would read more. It sure feeds the brain. Of course, they say it may help prevent Alzheimers Disease and, if so, I'm a gonna read cause i'm not young anymore, just old and annoying.LOL

Unsolved Mysteries maybe....I remember watching the story on TV. Wasn't that supposed to have happened in SW Missouri. There are lots of holes there...Carthage stone and such. Urban myth maybe?
An unstable person put into a stressful situation could trigger some sort of mental crisis.
Before the advent of psychologic/psychiatric medicine a borderline personality/mental constitution could have gone on undiagnosed only surfacing as the person was introduced to a situation that evoked the christian mythological 'Hell Gate'.

If it was on TV it must be true! Nothing against Unsolved Mysteries or anything, but they are a TV show dependent on ratings. So they "spruce" up the stories a bit to make them seem more mysterious and intriguing. It is nothing more than an urban myth.

It wasn't radioactivity, it was Dioxin. And the town was called Towns Beach. It was up near St. Louis. It was evacuated in the mid 1980s I believe. Destroyed several years later. It's now a state park.(I am 29 years old)

my point was, just cause you don't know the "hole" to be true, doesn't mean it's not true......the earth has plenty of mysteries that can't be explained.....
