When was that school open and then closed? And did it house grade school through high school?
Thank you |

Have no idea how old it is, just know it has been there for a heck of a long time and have never seen it used for anything.

It was built as a high school only--look at top. When the high school moved to its new building on Highway 61 (now New Madrid Elementary) the junior high grades moved into the building from school on Main Street. I am pretty sure K through 6 stayed in the Main Street school, but they may have moved out to Scott Street for a short time. I can't remember exactly from the class pictures that were on the walls, but I am pretty sure they started in the 1930's and went to the early 60's. I think it closed late 1970's, but can't remember for sure. Maybe one of the older teachers can tell you more. If you really want to know exact dates you could call the district office, but they probably can't tell you either. Once they leave a building it is forgotten forever. Just look around the county.

I heard that property was donated and no one including the city can do anything with it. That is sad, because it could be a hotel for the town or even office buildings or the new resource center. |

I have heard that the property has some sort of legal restriction that keeps it from being torn down, but it could have been used other things. Unfortunately, I was told it is in such bad shape now from termites and water damage it would cost too much to convert it to anything. I have thought about it and think it was early 1940's class pictures on the walls and not the 1930's. Pretty sure it was the 1960's when they moved out on 61 highway.

That is a shame they cannot or do not do something with it. Have always wondered why though.

to the third grade at the Scott St. school. Loved it. From there we went to Kewanee school for 4th and 5th grade. I have also heard that it is full of asbestos as well. My Dad did graduate from high school there but I can't remember the class. They were the New Madrid Owls.

hmmmm ....you thinking what im thiking ? lol |

I also wish that the old Scott Street school could be used. I think a New Madrid County School Museum would be nice. It is important to keep our history-my 1960's class photo now hangs in the Elementary school on hiway 61. But, we are all so money tight right now that doing anything is probably impossible-just wishing!!

I remember going to 6th grade at the school. Then we moved away. That would have been around '68 since I graduated in '74.

the old school on main st. was K thru 4, then the up stairs was comdemed, making it K thru 3, the scott street school was 4 thru 8, and the new school on hwy.61 was 9 thru 12, I graduated in 1973.

I went the second grade at Main Street School. I had the 3rd and 4th grade at Scott Street School. I then was bused to Kewanee for the 5th grade. I then went to the High School on Highway 61 for the 6th, 7th, and the 8th grade. The high school was there at the same time. My freshman year (80-81) was the first year of NMCC. I guess all the moving around was getting ready for the consolidation.

Its obvious that the school has sum history in it for it not to b torn town or nething, but heck even i could b wrong. Legal restictions or not, it was there when i was a kid, n it's probly gonna b there long after quite a few of us move on. Everytime i come home, i drive down that street to see is nething has happened to it, n its still goin strong. I say restore it n make it a historic site. Theres sumtin significant bout the buildin that keeps it up.

what building on main street was it? what was the building on the corner of main and pinnel where the bus stops now?
|

Thats a good ? as well. I think it was a school too, but its been tore down for quite sum time. Ur talkn bout the one that was across from Mr Hunters hows, which is the big blue house down from the health clinic. Wasnt that sum kinda catholic school or sumthin?

There was a school on the corner of main street and pinnell. I went to school there. I believe it was k-4th grade. I loved the school on scott street. I went to school there as well. I agree with everyone, it need to be restored and make it into a historic site. I thought it was so cool when I went there. All the floors was very pretty hardwood floors. Anyways the city wont put any money in it to restore it trust me. They went broke with the river front project. They have even raised our electric another 30%. But it sure would be nice to see it restored.

I don't know if any of you guys have looked at that building, but if you had you would notice that all of the wood is rotten and the floors and roof are collapsing. Sure it could be restored, it would take over a million dollars. I just wish it could be torn down. It is an eye sore and looks like something that belongs in North St. Louis. There is nothing special about it. I say put the wrecking ball to the heap.

I believe that the person that donated the ground for the school to begin with ended up with the building back when the school was abandoned. I also think that the city cannot tear the building down, it was supposed to be renovated according to he deed or something like that. Like wrecking ball, the building is beyond repair and the expense of tearing it down and possibly removal of asbestos would be veeerrrryyy expensive.

the building could be considered a historical site; there are Federal & State grants, loans, etc. to restore & preserve such buildings.
I haven't looked up the criteria but I'm sure it would be easy do a Google search to find out if the City of NM was interested. I'm not sure if it's true, but I've always been told that the building was tied up in some type of legal restriction that if it was ever torn down, the property would revert back to original owner, estate, trustee, etc, & the City of NM would no longer be able to use any of the property it sits on, which includes the ball parks. I don't understand why it hasn't been condemned if it's considered dangerous/hazardous & in such bad condition. I believe any other building (commercial or otherwise) would have already been condemned according to City of NM's new building codes; other buildings, structures, homes, etc. have already been condemned & weren't even close to being in as bad condition as the old school is in now. I really hope someone will do something to try to preserve it!!! |
