I have been reading a lot of talk about different fire departments, can anyone tell me the truth? And has anyone actually went to these departments and took the time to get to know them?

Yeah I have, I’m from a small town in Minnesota and we had a volunteer fire department which I was on before I joined the Army. But it was very different from here, these guys are a serious bunch! Back home the corner stone of our community was the fair and a local lake that hosts a lot of events in the summer. The focus of our town was to grow, which we have and try to bring industry and jobs and affordable housing and try to be the best community we can be. So when I got here I thought that this is not much different from home and I would like to give back to the community here and be a volunteer again. But WOW! The politics surrounding fire departments here is nothing like back home! I will tell you this from my experience, around here they are a tight knit group and they all hate each other and every fire department around thinks that they are better then the others.
The federal guys think that all the local departments are bunch of @$$ backwards yahoo’s and think they are better trained then anybody around, the city guys hate the federal guys and the volunteers, the volunteers hate all the paid guys both city and federal because they get paid and they do it for free. Have you ever listened to a scanner around here? All of them argue on the radio about who area the fire is in, they argue on the radio about who got there first! It’s scary! So I went to my local Police Jury Member and I told him and you what he told me? He wasn’t going anywhere near that! I told him I was going to the next meeting and going to bring it up and he told me, good luck with that! It’s crazy you read all these forums about the grandfathers that run the town or bikers that say that they own the town or corrupt police departments. But in my opinion it’s the fire departments that run this state! When your local officials are afraid to address issues with the fire departments……well then you know who is running the show!
But the really funny thing is they all do a really great job, the volunteers do a great job for being volunteer around here, the city guys do an excellent job with what they have to work with and the federal guys are well trained but far less experienced at fighting fires then yes are local volunteers. But if they would all put there heads together and quit fighting amongst themselves as a whole they would all be super fantastic! But that’s not the way it is around here. The corner stone of every community in this area is its fire department and none of them are going to back down to the others……IT’S THE HATFIELDS & McCoy’s AROUND HERE IN THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS!

Stationed here, a little over the top there, true to some point I guess. Never really looked at it like that. I do agree with the fighting remark but I think that they come together when needed.

Power corrupts and since 911 addressing came along. You have a bunch of brown shirt thugs in some of these places who do things their way and safety sometimes takes a back seat. But in some instances its the politicians who are causing the problem. They should follow the law as it is set down and stop making their own versions of it. But it has been my experience that it depends who shows up as to how someone is treated. And it sometimes does not really matter they all treat the property owner like they own him and his property. The old days are dead when civil servants and neighbors treated everyone with respect. And as for coming together when needed, the answer to that is when fighting a fire you can not fight with each other because if you do the fire will take care of all of you. No! The sad truth is that the fire departments in our area do really good work at a fire. It's when they are not fighting a fire that tend to mess up. On the Texas side we have a bunch who thinks that mandate means that they can break the law.
