Ok, so today my child comes home from Liberty with a note asking for $17.25 to purchase 3 books that they will be reading in language arts class this year. I about went through the ceiling! Are you kidding me? Where does the $325.00 that I paid to register my child go to? At open house I was shown a HUGE 3 inch thick language arts book by the teacher. Why the hell aren't they using that book in the school? That textbook alone must have cost at least $100.00 per book. Someone in the district chose to adopt that book and the curriculum that goes along with the book, why the hell are we asked to put out even more money for 3 additional books? If the district wants to teach these books, they should use those insane fees to purchase them, not pass the fees onto the parents. it's not the money that I am worried about. What I am worried about is how come one reading teacher is teaching these books and no one else is? Where is the continunity in the curriculum? How are these books aligned to the state standards? Isn't the $100.00 giant textbook enough for one year of language arts classes? Doesn't the district have plans set in place for all language arts teachers to teach the same thing to all students,or is each teacher allowed to wing it and teach anything they want to these kids? This district starting at 4th grade at Ridge and going all the way through Liberty is CRAP!! When is someone going to wake up and get this district aligned and on track. I can't wait till we go to Lincolnway. At least they know what it is like to follow a curriculum and run a district!

I put 3 kids through NL schools, and each one of them had to purchase books outside of school, as did my nephews, and they've been out of school more than 20 years.

My suggestion would be to get together with the other parents and NOT PAY MORE! Utilize what they have first!!! If no one pays, what will the teacher do. Problem is that no one stands up and just says "Enough is enough already" Like you said extremely high school fees and they still need more?? Tell them to use my Kindergarteners "instructional material fee" I am quite certain all of that just goes into admin's pockets!!!!!!!!!!

As a community we need to go and address the board,(if we can find them moving from school to school having their pot luck)that was a bright idea from the queen Markus, and her court of fools,Kedzior and Gillooley!

I am all about extra knowledge - if someone wants to teach my kids additional information - thank you. I see all this bit**ing on here and I can't stomach it - I will go to the end of the world for my kids education - I am not willing to give up ANYTHING - I want my kids to have it all and I will pay for it - if it means we can't go out to dinner or we have to drive a used car - there is nothing more important than spending my money on my kids education. I really don't think that anything would make you happy - there will always be something in any situation to make you complain. Blah Blah Blah

I think your sentiments are shared by most parents, and that is the reason why so many are vocal regarding the district's spending policies on our top-heavy administration. Overinflated salaries, cusy pensions, car perks, etc. reduce what can be best used to educate our children. Parents who've chosen to vote their friends on the board without taking into account their competence are now reaping what they have sown.

Rather than demonize those who've taken the time to address serious issues, listen to what is challenged and then watch how your board votes. Remember, it's their votes that count, not their lip service to the camera.

I think everyone is "all for" a great education for our kids. This issue at hand is the nickel and diming the district is now adding upon us along with the highest registration fees in the surrounding area. The problem is that they are not being smart about it. Why didn't they plan ahead and plan to teach these novels earlier? Anyone knows that if a district has a good curriculum in place that these lessons have already been planned out way in advance and teachers are prepared to teach them. To me this book idea sounds like some teachers got the idea to teach these books and they are not part of the NL122 non-existant curriculum and there is no administration watching over what they are doing in the classrooms.

The finance committee minutes from 7/30/09 are interesting. You can read the full minutes on-line. Part of that is Dr. Sass stating that there are 4 philosophical areas that the committee should reach consensus on in the future. Those are: creative ways to motive people to pay (collection); "Pay to Play" for activities; what consequences should impact families that do not pay?; if we reduce fees, do we reduce expenditures?

My daughter is a freshman at Lincoln-way. She was told to forget EVERYTHING she was taught about writing at New Lenox Schools. She will be taught the "correct" way (the Lincoln-Way) of writing. Why doesn't New Lenox Schools help out our students and teache them the writing Method that LW wants?

Just wait the huge property tax increase is on the way. There going to have to find a way to pay for the four half empty schools. Growth is not coming back for awhile so get ready. It already hit Frankfort it's coming.

And this is why education is so expensive in this country. Do you know that a college education costs about $4000.00 a year in most of Europe and it's a much better education? The reason it's so inexpensive is because only those that are qualified get into college. Here we basically buy our degrees for tens of thousands of dollars a year and most of them aren't worth the paper they're printed on. If people refused to pay, the cost would naturally come down. We have this philosophy that more money equals a better education but it's just not true. Did you hear about the 11 year old that was kidnapped in California 18 years ago and basically raised her two children imprisoned in a tent? They said the children are educated. How could this be when they were home schooled by a mother with no teaching background, no fancy building, no supplies and only a 5th grade education herself? If you haven't figured it out by now, that extra money never goes to where it was intended, only into someone's pocket.

I'm glad my kids are out of school. I think fees were about $50 when my kids were in grade school. Let's see... my youngest graduated in 2001, so it probably was a little higher than $50 then.

I was just stating that the schools have always required outside book purchases as far back as I can remember.

We are paying for all of the people who don't live in our district that to go to our schools and can't afford to pay the fees!

Who was the teacher? I find that really frightening. I have heard the same sort of thing about LW teachers saying N.L. students are unprepared for math at LW, but never something said outright.
