Sorry but I just have to vent. I live in Riivendell subdivision in unincorporated New Lenox and as I was coming home from work today at 3:30 I saw a dead body on the tracks. He was driving a brand new SUV, he parked it right next to the tracks and laid his head down, he was headless. I’m really shook up, I can’t help but think I could have prevented this if I was only coming home a little sooner. He was wearing adidas pants and a blue hoodie. I’m freaked out.

Was that across from Berkots in New Lenox?I saw police/ambulance in that area around that time, it looked like they were searching for something in the water.

I would be very upset seeing that as well. Something went very wrong in this man's life, for him to feel that was his only choice.

It's actually right in Riivendell, right on the side of the tracks in the neighborhood. You can drive by and see it, I wouldn't recommend that.

You did report it, or someone did right?

I also live in Riivendell. I came home just minutes after it happened. I felt the same way as you , what if I would have been driving by a little sooner,or gotten home sooner. Could I have stopped it from happening in any way. I live right there! Maybe when I went down to get my mail, I would have saw him and waved, or said hi. Things could have been different. I could have seen him attempting it , and stopped him. This is very upsetting to me. My children and myself were all able to see the police and the man from our window. I had to leave. The image of him is burnt into my mind. I feel so bad for the man and his family. What could have made him do such a thing?

Last August I saw a man walk into an oncoming train during the morning rush hour. I saw the whole thing happen right before my eyes. I usually never post on these comment boards but I just want to let you know that you probably could not have prevented this from happening. When I saw the man walking onto the tracks and I saw the train coming I screamed and yelled for the man to stop but he just kept walking into the path of the train like I didn't even exist. It took me months of counseling to realize that he was going to do it no matter what and there was nothing I could have done to help him. I’m so sorry that you had to see what you did but I just hope that this gives you some sort of a piece of mind. Also, my prayers go out to the family and friends of the victim. May God Bless you all.

As bad as this is for you and Jane, your children are probably full of questions and thoughts.

While trying to find the right words to discuss suicide with my high schooler many years ago, my son offered these "It is a permanent solution to a temporary problem".

Not sure where he heard it but the simplicity of the statement made it memorable to both of us. I thought I would pass it on.

I think the economy has many people shaken up. You who live in Rivendell sound like wonderful people. To think you wished you could have helped is such a wonderful refreshing thing to hear. God bless you and your families. I feel terrible that you had to witness the aftermath but your heartfelt feelings show what a wonderful person you must be. We only hear of the bad but I am proud to live in New Lenox with people like you. God Bless this lost soul and his family!
