"Lead, Follow or get out of the way" First of all I would like to point out that I am using my real name for this post and this is my first time ever posting on this site. With that being said I would like to say goodbye to all of my fellow members of the NLFD. Over the last 15 years working with the many fine brothers and sisters of this department I can say proudly that It has been an honor and privilege to have experienced the good and bad times together. We all have worked under extremely stressful situations together and always preformed. Secondly to the residents of the district I also enjoyed serving your community. I have met many of you during public events such as station tours and outside events such as Proud American Days and the concert and movies at the park. I would like to point out to you you do have a great bunch of members working there both contract and POC members. During past times both sides have fought fiercely on this web page but that is because both sides have a strong love for the department. I would like the residents to realize that many times the rank and file members operate under great scrutiny from management which makes their jobs that much more difficult. I named this post Lead, Follow, or Get Out of the Way because until upper management learns to take this approach the internal problems will never be fixed. So I say farewell to all of you And GOD bless. Right now I feel very saddened to leave you so please understand that writing this is very tough so please forgive for any grammar errors. Alan

You seem like a man a great integrity by your letter to our community. I can't imagine why they are letting you go. You seem to possess honor, intelligence, grace and experience.

I'm sure another community will grab you in a heart beat. All the best, unless things change here for the better and they hire you back.

Your the guy who tried to keep the union out and now you cry. If you had a union rep on your side you would have a chance. Next time learn who to stand with in a fight. Go take Froneks blood pressure now that he burned you.

No he would not. The union can not do anything for you when you are on probation.

And he had the chance to be in the union before he was hired and he turned it down and told other people not to join.

As a former contract employee that worked with you Al, I would like to say you are 100% right. the upper management needs to listen to the post Lead, Follow or get out of the way. They need to get out of the way it is sad they got ride of you. Al we had our differences but we worked though them and that just made us stronger you are a great Firefighter and Paramedic. It was my honor and privilege to work with you. you have taught me how to be a good company officer and you taught me new ways to do things. I am very saddend that they would have done this to your dedication. Thank God Peotone still has you. Remember Keep You Head Up High and the grass is greener on the other side. Stay safe brother and if you need anything let me now. You are a great friend. Thank you again.
Before anyone start bashing him on this site. Grow up this was a dedicated man to this District and to the residents. It is hard to find men and women so dedicated. I am a former employee of the District that was dedicated alond side him. I did leave do to money issuses. I am still a fulltime firefighter but I do not make more money now. If the District could afford to pay me what I make now I would still be there. The firefighters so the same job as I do. The union could not help him due to being on probation just like me I am under probation. Leave the nasty comments out and keep up the support for great guy.
good luck

Why do you think the union is so high powered?
Look at the car industry. The unions are the one's killing our car industry.

I wish this gentleman lots of luck and happiness. No job is worth heartache.

Al, you are and have been my best friend and partner for many years. We worked together so well we could run a night call and barely talk because we knew what to expect of each other. We laughed, we fought and we cared. You saved my butt so many times because I was hot headed and you were always the voice of reason. I was so happy for you when the department finally recognized that you were a true LEADER. You work so hard and truly care. You so deserved that position. I knew there would be stress for you and for that I worried but I also know you can handle it. You have a wonderful wife and a daughter who adores you. And a best friend who loves you dearly. You are far to good for them to treat you the way they did. Don't look back, only look ahead, because someone as special as you will be appreciated and welcomed with open arms elsewhere. And while you are walking away Fronek and his crew can KISS YOUR ASS!!!!
The saddest part is that it is the community who is being cheated of a great dedicated firefighter, paramedic, instructor, officer and friend.
Love YA!!

I challenge anyone who posts on this site for any reason to use their real name. If you have something to say then be a stand up person and say it without hiding.

While the union may have been the right move for the guys that were/are Part-time/POC and not contract, it could do little to help the contract personnel. The union would have protected us while working part time, but it could offer us no protection while on contract time. As contract employees they could come in and with no reason at all decide that you are no longer needed at that department and replace you. At the time this was presented to the department there was fear of retaliation by the board against any contract member who signed a union card.

Al good luck, I am sure I will see you around soon.

I just heard about this. We worked a lot together and I do not know what happened. I find it hard to believe that it was worth letting you go. We are here if you ever need anything. Keep it touch. Be safe!

I was hoping when I heard the news on Tuesday that a Captain had been let go, it was not you. After 14 years on the contract, and 364 days, 15.5 hours (approx.) full time, you deserved better.

Stay strong and keep your head up, brother.

Al,

You've got the phone number for the best Labor Law Attorney. The Decision is yours as to the next step. All I can say to you is, that you helped me become the Fire Fighter and Lieutenant I have become. For that I can never repay to you, for you have been one of the best Friends, Co-Worker and Fire Service colleague I have ever had the privelage of being with and learning from. Just know that if there is anything I can do to help out in your future endevors please do not hesitate to call or ask. It has trully become a sad day in the fire service when someone of your callibur will no longer be in the mix of public safety and protection. You have touched the lives of many and that in and of itself has no price, for you have made a difference in countless lives for the better. You are a great Man, Father , Husband and above all a Fire Service Leader.

See Alan I told ya you were loved!!!! Chris ya big oaf ya made me cry. Al you are the BESTEST. And please follow through on this like Chrs said. These men and I use the term lightly (more like worms) need to be made to account for their actions. I know a lot of people that would pay to watch that show!! I just wish Veerman were in the mix too - he got off lightly!! He needed to fall of that fence he rode for far toooooo long!! Spineless creature.

Well again people do not have any facts. i was never let go from the District. I left to be a Fulltime Firefighter/ Paramdic in University Park. So who ever you are get the facts straight and atleast put your name up. But thats right you are a chicken to do so. Grow a set of balls.
