WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- In a line that event attendees found a bit puzzling, Mitt Romney warned a crowd of mostly middle-class onlookers on Wednesday not to expect too much tax relief under his administration.

"We have got to reform our tax system," Romney said at a morning event here. "Small businesses most typically pay taxes at the individual tax rate. And so our individual income taxes are the ones I want to reform. Make them simpler. I want to bring the rates down. By the way, don't be expecting a huge cut in taxes because I'm also going to lower deductions and exemptions. But by bringing rates down we will be able to let small businesses keep more of their money so they can hire more people."

The comments were either a flub on Romney's part or an admission that many of the deductions and exemptions that he will have to target in order to make his tax plan deficit neutral will end up affecting the middle class.

To date, Romney has said that he will only eliminate deductions and exemptions above a certain income level. He hasn't said what that income level would be. But when asked whether he would make $100,000 the cutoff, he said that he considered "middle income" to be "$200,000 to $250,000 and less." (One of the few Romney-backing studies has said that the only way his tax plan adds up is if he eliminates deductions and exemptions above that $100,000 income level).

Romney's comment on Wednesday left some in the crowd believing that their deductions and exemptions -- be they on home mortgage interest payments, charitable donations or employer-provided health insurance -- would be targeted if he became president. And it wasn't a top-income-bracket type of crowd. In 2009, the estimated median household income in Westerville was $76,154. Census data from 2011 shows that the mean household income in Franklin County, which contains part of Westerville, is $65,607. For Delaware County, which contains another part of Westerville, that number is $107,231.

"I'm curious what he meant by that," Westerville resident Phil Bentley said of Romney's comment. "I don't know if I have seen those details."

I think Romney has the foundation for a new tax plan. Like any law, there will be some debate as to all of the final details. This tells me that Romney is not going to walk into congress and try to force a complete tax plan down everyone's throat but he will work with them to get this done. Obviously, this is a different approach than Obama takes and that's a big reason why Obama gets nothing done. I believe obamas budget plan was voted down 97 to 0 in the senate. What does that tell you?

As for the definition of what middle class is, do you not remember Obama from 2008? First he said it was 250k. He changed that to 200k. Then 150k. Then 97k. Of course that all depended on who he was talking to though.

Hint: We now owe $16T. We borrow over 40% of what we spend. It takes one politician telling you the truth, and Romney is doing exactly that. Business Executives deal with facts, turn-around experts deal with facts, Romney deals with facts. We are facing the larget mega tax increase in January 2013 in history if Obama continues his plan.

I mean, party politics is one thing, but the future of our childrens well being is what Romney/Ryan prioritize. They are the responsible adults in the race. We simply canno keep borrowing to give more away as Obama desires. He's over his head.

Relax! The polls don't mean anything right now. They are basing them off of 2008 voter turnouts, which most people believe will not be even close to the same. Obama doesn't have the same enthusiasm with his base this time around. I heard Scott Walker on the radio this morning talking about how the exit polls had him at a dead heat in Wisconsin and he endued up winning by 7 points.

Romney needs to be more aggressive but I think he will do that. He will tear Obama apart in these debates when we finally get to see these two face to face. Relax though. The liberal media is counting on stirring republicans up like this and hopefully making us think that we don't need to vote because we don't have a shot. Just more blatant media bias.

I received a call yesterday from the republican party for a donation. They said the media, the papers, the polls are all for Obama. Its just dirty politics. They have an agenda, they don't care that Obama is the worst president ever, they still want him to win. They said Romney is doing well in battleground states. The media refuses to cover it. They believe from their stats its a done deal. Romney will win.

This is great. Stuff like this gives us a glimpse of what to expect after the election. I can't wait to see the conspiracy theories and voter fraud accusations from right wingers after Obama pounds Mitt.

Mitt stands no chance. The problem with Republicans is that they are dying off. There are less old, white guys in the country now than there were last election. The RNC still thinks the Reagan/Bush recipie for republican victory still works in 2012 and they are in for a rude awakening after this election. The economy is still weak and Obama is very vulnerable because he is in charge. So who does the Republican party pick to challenge him? Some old, filthy rich, stiff, white dude with the biggest silver spoon in his mouth that he is clueless about the persona of the average, middle class, american.

Romney is great for guys over 50, but that doesn't fly in 2012 when minorities are gaining in population everyday, and dead white republicans are being replaced with younger progressive minded voters.

Taking hard stances on gay marriage, immigration reform, voter suppresion, war mongering, corporate welfare, and tax cuts for the filthy rich aren't going to cut it anymore.

I predict that this election will be a turning point for the future generation of politics in our country.

The media push is trying hard to sell Obama despite the destruction he has caused on America. Its not working. Romney is going to win. People can't afford four more years of spending and failed policies and weak diplomacy, then blaming Republicans for it.

You better start setting your alarm clock for 6am, pour some coffee down your throat and get a head start looking for work. The free rides are coming to an end.

Jack you are funny. You are the prototypical democrat that spews rhetoric, without ever having a single idea of your own. I do however, agree with you on a couple things.

Republicans do take a stand on what they believe in. You act as if this is a bad thing. Somehow, it's a bad thing to stand firm on your principles?

As for there being more "progressive" minds in this country, it certainly didn't seem that way when your "progressive" buddies were being thrown out of office at an alarming rate in 2010.

As for your description of the republican hard stance subject, gay marriage(didn't obama just come out on that only because Biden forced his hand?), voter suppression(voter fraud), war mongering (national security and fighting terrorism), corporate welfare (Have you heard of Solyndra?), and tax cuts for the rich(nice rhetoric but not supported by Romney's plan), obviously we disagree here. You can present things your way, even if it is inaccurate, you have to right to say stupid things. Enjoy your free speech while you still have it.

I love this post. The only thing, as much as I hate this, the media is doing a great job of selling Obama. That's the problem. Romney should win this election by 30 points if people were being educated about what is really going on in this country. I still think Romney will win but it shouldn't even be close. Without this media bias, Romney could start moving into the white house over the weekend.

I'm not fat, old or a white man. I'm a young, intelligent woman who will be voting for Mitt Romney in November. There is too much at stake to let Obama have another 4 years in office. I need to think about my future and right now it's not looking too good. There are way too many of us college grads looking for employment and unable to find it. There are plenty of unpaid internships but not enough jobs. I hope this country wakes up and stops listening to all of the media hype and manipulation.

I agree with you. The blacks and uninformed whites sell their soles to the democratic party for crumbs. The economic standards the democrats have created for the blacks is so bad, they should be rioting right now. They should be lining up already to vote for Romney. The democrats suppress them so they never will have anything and they can't see that.

Stupid kids these days think because they recieved a sociology degree from Eastern means that people will be lining up to give them a job just because they graduated "college".

Where did you go? What grades did you get? What did you study?

Again, another example of how out of touch the old, white men of the GOP are. Calling black people out for being too stupid to realize someone is taking advantage of them. It's no wonder Mitt is getting clobbered by the black/latino causcus. Oh wait, I forgot, Mitt said in his hidden camera speech that he wishes he was Mexican because life would be soooo much easier for him!

Jack, once again you're an idiot. During the Obama term, less than 50% of all College grads found work. Do some research. You are white static noise....

Obama policy's have destroyed the youth's future, and cost them a decade of lost dreams all together. Plus, his $16T debt, nearly $6T of his own reclessness has crushed the youths tax future as well.

The largest tax increase in history will be here in January 2013 under Obama too.

Take your head out of your azz kid.

Go to work for Mitt at minimum wage, try Staples or Dominoes. If you want to travel go for one of his labor camps in China. He is a job creator.
