I keep hearing/reading about this bill. Is this a first step to put some control over the runaway spending in Illinois w/regard to union pensions?

The following is from a letter to the editor of the Elgin Courier News dated 9-5-12 written by:

John Kindt of Mahomet, a professor of business at the College of Business at Illinois. He has testified as an academic before Congress and state legislatures regarding business and legal policy issues.

The letter begins:

Amendment 49 on the November ballot in Illinois is cleverly drafted to concentrate more monetary power in the same Springfield legislative leaders who have de facto bankrupted the Illinois Treasury. With $83 billion in projected liabilities, Illinois has the nation’s largest state budget crisis.

Amendment 49 is crafted to strip local governments and voters of current decision-making prerogatives and transfer those decisions to Springfield....

and ends with:

Instead of concentrating more power in Springfield’s legislative leadership, taxpayers should consider simply rejecting Amendment 49 as just more deceptive legislative legerdemain.

Ah, so even though this system is unsustainable and worthy of complete overhaul, this is still a bad idea?

Giving Springfield more control is not good either, I agree.

So what's the solution? Tax more and more?

Robbing Paul to pay Peter...yep, typical Illinois politics. Steal from those who follow the rules and let the greedy losers continue to rip off the taxpayers. We're going to have a lot more people on welfare if we take away the public pensions of retirees. The people in this state need to wake up and realize even if they strip public employees of their benefits it's still not going to lower their taxes because they are just going to blow the money on one of their pet projects. This state makes me sick and so does Quinn, Emanuel, Madigan and the rest of the stooges running this state. The city of Chicago runs this state.

I find it interesting that the state is working hard to transfer the financial burden to the local level but with this bill they are retaining control over the money. The local municipalities will take the hit without gaining the control. Isn't that what they call "having your cake and eating it too"?

Or......we could have a new president, the economy could be improving, people could be back to work, the borders could be better protected, Sass would be one year closer to retirement, we might know what really happened the night Zimmerman shot Trayvon and Baldermann could have had his disability pension rescinded and then we will have to find something else to talk about like, maybe, the weather?

I care.

Nobody posts on here thinking they are going to change the world. They come here to share ideas, opinions and debate. Some people actually find that activity intellectually stimulating and socially fun. If you do not agree, then by all means, go play a video game. Your judgement of how others choose to spend their free time is not only not welcome, but is somewhat hypocritical since you just shared your opinion by way of a post on this forum.

These are not Union Pensions, they are Pensions....you do not need to belong to a Union to have these pensions....bosses, supervisors, judges, administrators, etc.

Ok...just have to point this out. Simple math. Since when is 3/5 more than 2/3. This bill states that if passed a 3/5 majority vote will make it so the parties will have to work harder to come to an agreement because it requires a larger majority to pass changes to union bills. But if you equalize out 2/3 and 3/5 to say 15. Then for a 2/3 majority you need 10 out of a total 15 people to agree. With a 3/5 you only need 9 out of 15. How is that more??? Are our representative that dumb, or just really fradulant?

Didn't pass. The only smart thing voters did in this election.

No, it did't pass. They got enough votes but they needed a certain percentage in order for it to pass. Thank God! I'm sure Madigan and company is scheming right now on how sneak it in again.
