Excuse my ignorance. Who is Terry Lee?
I have a serious question for all. What brand of Ketchup do you buy? This will determine a true New Kensingtonite.

DJ from McKeesport, early 1960s. Here's a link to identify him further. I posted it last week at RNKNL.

Not strictly a memory of New Ken but of the era. Does anybody remember Dickie Doo and the Don'ts? a kind of one hit band that flashed and then disappeared.(They had a song called Ne Ne Na Na Na Na Nu Nu in about 1958)

Years later "Richard Doo" (actually, a guy named Gerry Granahan from Pittston in the hard coal region) showed up in eastern PA claiming to be an architect. He bought a piece of property near the Delaware River that was essentially a ravine and built an Earth Shelter house with literally tons and tons of dirt on the roof. The year after completion there was a particularly wet spring and Dickie Doo discovered that he had seriously, seriously, under-reinforced the roof. He started to hear loud bangs inside the house and quickly moved out. One morning soon after that Dickie Doo had vanished yet again. After a whole lot of teeth gnashing the mortgage company, who was left holding the bag, came in and had the house torn down and the ravine returned to its natural state.

A kind of take off on "Where are they now?" only it's "where else aren't they now?"

We are talking about 5th Ave. Elementary School, located on 5oo block of 5th Ave. Marilyn dated Bob Peebles forever. Did you know Marilyn passed away a couple years ago? Are you coming to the reunion? Kaleneob Bordonaro. And I remember Marilyn Adams. Didn't she date Bob Peebles for a long time? But what playground are you talking about? I remember "Tea Dances" at 4th Ave.(a boy named Mitchell something was my first dance) and the basketball court dances at the old high school. Did we have to take off our shoes? Can't place playground dances.
I'm sorry to hear about Marilyn. Did she and Bob marry? Not sure about the reunion; after decades of using latex gloves my husband has developed an allergy to latex.it's an unpredictable condition. I just had a thought; in this day and age what do you think would have happened to our shoes at a sock hop?

Thanks for the memories Will:
Here is a clip about the "Skyliners:
"Since I Don't Have You" is a song by the doo-wop group The Skyliners, one of Pittsburgh's famous groups. Released in 1958, the single reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also the top five of the R&B chart. The song, highlighted by a powerful vocal by lead singer Jimmy Beaumont, and a falsetto on the final chorus by Janet Vogel, is considered by oldies fans to be one of the best "heartbreak" ballads ever recorded, and a classic of pre-Beatles rock and roll, and is still frequently played on the radio. The song was featured in the films American Graffiti, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, Lethal Weapon 2, and Mischief.yliners"

In 1958, after sailing up and down the east coast for a number of years, 2 years in the army 51-53, and attending the University of Miami, I was living on Miami Beach and was busy with acrobatic diving in water shows, hanging out in Jazz clubs, and entertaining the many young ladies who came to Miami Beach for a week of fun, that I rarely listened to the radio. The Doo Wop era slipped by me. Years later I became familiar with it through a friend, Monti Rock III, who had a hit record, Disco Tex and the Sexolettes. Did you ever hear of him?

WQED runs a special during their fund raising campaigns, every year. They bring back the doo wop all stars that are still alive. It is really cool. Probably a CD of the program could be obtained through their web site.

Does anyone remember the clock that was on Bouquet Hill? I think it advertised Pittsburgh National Bank in New Kensington. The clock was on the other side of the 9th Street Bridge.
