I went there from kindergarten to fifth, when they tore it down. I was one of the lucky kids, we went to Edgewwod.

This picture shows three stories, but I only remember two.

First floor K through 3, plus the bathrooms. Second floor 4,5,6 teachers lounge, library/lunchroom and the principals office.

There were three floors - four large class rooms on each floor. I remember a geography class on the first floor on the left as you enter. I remember the Indian tepee in that room, when the Indians came for a visit. I went to second grade on the 1st floor in the room on the right in the back. Third grade was the front left, second floor - the back left was Mrs Weaver's Art class.
I am getting confused.

I went there in the sixth grade. I remember 3 classes there, all on the third floor. Mrs. Caldwell, Mrs. Howell and my home room teacher, Mrs. Brunt. Mrs. Brunt taught art and mayby something else that I don't recall. The year was either 1950,51 or 51,52.

The pic must have been taken prior to my attendence since I don't see the basketball hoop and backboard that was there in the early 50's.

Mornin Sam, what do you mean, old?? I see myself as middle aged. That basketball hoop was in the front right side of the school, near the fence. When we played ball there, part of the court was asphalt and the other concrete, with a crack in between. I remember a tree limb that prevented shooting from a part of the court too. We played a lot of "jack*ss" there.

Was Mrs Caldwell on the short side and cute? Did Mrs. Brunt wear a black wig? Was Mrs. Howell a large (not fat) woman? I don't know how an old guy like you remembers those names, they are all gone from my memory. But, I guess I am a little older than you. Best wishes to ya.

That's what i meant, on the right side of the building. The photo is cropped just before the part of the fence that had the hoop. You rememberd the cracked asphalt? I can't remember the crack in .....

Mrs. Brunt was a heavy woman and noted for eating out of a drawer in her desk. Mrs. Howell was thin and had a short fuse. Mrs. Caldwell was soft spoken with a perfect disposition for being a 6th grade teacher.
You're right Sam, I recall that playground but forget where I laid my glasses. I remember that cellar door on the right of the pic too. I tripped over it running full speed around that corner.

If I remember right, there was concrete from corner to corner of the building. The rest of the fenced area was asphalt. I had some friends that lived in that neighborhood and often hung out in the schoolyard. I have memories of that entryway into the school too. A great place to discuss politics with some of the local girls if you get my drift Sam.

I went to Third Ward in the 60's. 1st grade was Mrs Lesig, 2nd was Mrs Mains, 3rd was Mrs Marshall. The third floor was torn off before my time. Grades 1 to 3 stayed in their clall all day, when you got to the 4th grade, you were on the 2n floor and changed classes. Mr Sallari(sp) was the principal but left when I got to 4th grade. I had Mr Sudnick(sp). Mrs Galli was the 4th grade teacher, her husdand owned the beer distributor on 7th Street. I remember the summers in the 60's when the "playground" had a teacher supervising the kids from 10am until 6 or 7:00 in the evening. Mr Flaharaty(sp) and Mr Bitar are 2 that I remember. There were lots of big time pickup basketball games there. That was a great time to grow up, Mr Wilsick used to come around weekly to give art lessons to the kids. It's not like that anymore..

I remember her, but it was at Martin School and I had her for 3rd grade, about 1957. She was VERY old and fell asleep often.

Daily Horoscope for December 2

Capricorn

The Gemini Full Moon brings situations at work to a head; there may be a sudden event that shakes up the office, but you should be free and clear of any real trouble. The real issue is the one you have most likely been avoiding: what sort of state is your health in? Have you been buying larger pants each year for the past three or four years in a row? Is your idea of strenuous exercise scooping hard ice cream out of the carton? If so, it's time for some changes.
