I see Sammy dropped a grand (paid up) on the church. I heard that a lot more than that was donated. They made the church happen. Funny, because the church shut them down from the info I have. But, what do I know?

A thousand bucks in 1941 was a lot of dough. I don't think the church had anything to do with shutting down anything while Sam and Kelly were running things. Maybe after their demise though. I never heard anything about the church interferring with the illegalities in town.

When the State police raided the clubs we were always warned and would pull down the front shield. But one day I got a call, and we took a truck and got the machines out. The word was the church put pressure on the state police and they were coming to smash them. They didn't find them until a year later. that was about the time things started changing. I was in the army then.

I have read that in the late 40s, early 50s, an organization known as "Operation Crusade" mounted quite a campaign against organized crime in western PA. It was made up of the leaders of several Christian churches, but I don't believe anyone from the Catholic or Orthodox churches was involved. Operation Crusade used the media to goad the state authorities into raiding several establishments, in NK and elsewhere. I didn't get the impression that they produced any lasting damage.
