Watching Bernanke Day Trade The Economy
“The Federal Reserve is not currently forecasting a recession.”
Ben Bernanke, Jan. 2008
“The Federal Reserve cuts the funds rate to 0.25% and announces unconventional measures to take country out of recession.”
- Bloomberg December 2008
Yes Ben, do give us some more of your prognostications about future unemployment, inflation and growth.
In March of or 2007, Ben told us this:
“At this juncture, however, the impact on the broader economy and financial markets of the problems in the sub-prime market seems likely to be contained.
In particular, mortgages to prime borrowers and fixed-rate mortgages to all classes of borrowers continue to perform well, with low rates of delinquency.”
Hey Ben, what are your feelings on assisting banks and other lenders should they get in trouble?
“It is not the responsibility of the Federal Reserve
– nor would it be appropriate
– to protect lenders and investors from the consequences of their financial decisions.”–October 2007
Hey Ben I’d love to know your opinion on housing.
“Housing markets are cooling a bit.
Our expectation is that the decline in activity or the slowing in activity will be moderate, that house prices will probably continue to rise.”
Thanks for pointing out that excellent work.

Henry Paulson was nominated on May 30, 2006, by U.S. President George W. Bush to succeed John Snow as the Treasury Secretary. On June 28, 2006, he was confirmed by the United States Senate to serve in the position. Paulson was sworn in at a ceremony held at the Treasury Department on the morning of July 10, 2006.
In April 2007, he delivered an upbeat assessment of the economy, saying growth was healthy and the housing market was nearing a turnaround. "All the signs I look at" show "the housing market is at or near the bottom," Paulson said in a speech to a business group in New York. The U.S. economy is "very healthy" and "robust," Paulson said.
On March 26, 2008, Secretary Paulson said in remarks at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce,“As we work our way through this turbulence, our highest priority is limiting its impact on the real economy. We must maintain stable, orderly and liquid financial markets and our banks must continue to play their vital role of supporting the economy by making credit available to consumers and businesses
On July 20, 2008, after the failure of Indymac Bank, Paulson reassured the public by saying,“it's a safe banking system, a sound banking system. Our regulators are on top of it. This is a very manageable situation
On November 20, 2008, during remarks at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, Secretary Paulson said,“We are working through a severe financial crisis caused by many factors, including government inaction and mistaken actions, outdated U.S. and global financial regulatory systems, and by the excessive risk-taking of financial institutions. This combination of factors led to a critical stage this fall when the entire U.S. financial system was at risk. This should never happen again. The United States must lead global financial reform efforts, and we must start by getting our own house in order.
On September 19, 2008, Paulson called for the U.S. government to use hundreds of billions of Treasury dollars to help financial firms clean up nonperforming mortgages threatening the liquidity of those firms. Because of his leadership and public appearances on this issue, the press labeled these measures the "Paulson financial rescue plan" or simply the Paulson Plan.
Henry Paulson was the 74th United States Secretary of the Treasury from July 2006 - January of 2009........
That damn Ben Bernanke ruined the economy !!!

John Boehner, Speaker of the House has repeatedly refused to give a straight answer on whether he supports allowing undocumented immigrants to eventually become citizens, arguing that it's not helpful for him to voice a view publicly because he should instead listen to his members. His only firm lines have been that a Senate-passed bill will go nowhere in the House, and that border security must come before legalization.
But for now, there's no consensus within the House Republican conference, or within the lower chamber as a whole, on what to do about immigration reform -- or even if legislators should do anything. Boehner did not say whether he would "find out" if GOP members could support legalization or a path to citizenship by holding a vote, or if that discovery would only involve continued conversations.
Boehner, for his part, argued that the House should and must act on reform in some way, a pitch he also made to his members at a GOP conference meeting on immigration on Wednesday. "Republicans ought to be part of the solution," he told reporters on Thursday.
When the GOP starts to embrace blacks, gays, immigrants, abortion,women's rights,disabled,elderly,and vets then and only then will they get a Republican in the Whitehouse !!

the best part of all of this is no matter what the Republicans do they lose its bad for them
if they did pass the bill the Republicans will implode as a party
if they don't pass it every minority in this country will look at them with disdain for eternity
Like rearranging the chairs on the Titanic !!!

Former Republican President George Bush did a lot of photo ops and speeches on immigration reform this week. The guy is trying to undermine Speaker Boehner even further. It also appears from yesterday's meeting that the majority of the Republicans in the House don't trust or believe John Boehner. John Boehner seems to have become a deserving but nonetheless sad object of derision in the GOP.

Talk about being between a rock and a hard place:
1. Don't pass it and slowly but surely succumb to the inevitability of the demographic changes
2. Pass it and potentially lose your job as speaker
This whole thing kind'a reminds me of the movie Lincoln - when he had to make the decision around outlawing slavery and had to show incredible profile in courage doing so. Yes, Yes, Yes. I know that those circumstances are not the same as this CIR Bill, but elements of it are similar - a leader faced with a tough decision:
1. Toe the party-line or cater to the baser elements of his party
2. Look at the broader long-term picture or acquiesce to the dictates of short-term politics
What's a House Leader to do?

Secure the border? How- electric fence? Trenches with alligators. Those are two GOP ideas. Meanwhile there are 11 million people here that have no where to go. They are here, we need to deal with them now. Not in 10 years after the GOP have dragged their feet over border security. Fences are scalled, dug under. Fix the laws and it will stem the tide of illegal immigration. Guest worker program, would be a good start.

State Attorney Gen. Kathleen Kane announced Thursday in Philadelphia that she will not defend Pennsylvania’s law effectively banning same-sex marriage against a legal challenge in federal court.
The 47-year-old Kane, who made waves Thursday by refusing to defend the state’s same-sex marriage ban in federal court, has quickly established herself as an up-and-coming Democrat who is willing to challenge powerful politicians to achieve her aims. She has already clashed repeatedly with her state’s Republican governor, Tom Corbett, who is slipping in the polls and must now defend Pennsylvania’s gay marriage law on his own.
“It’s the role of the attorney general to be an independently elected voice,” Kane said the day after winning the attorney’s general race.“People see politics as a close-knit, good ol’ boy network, and I want to change that starting Day One.”

Under the Mexican law,
illegal immigration is a felony,
punishable by up to two years in prison.
Immigrants who are deported and attempt to re-enter can be imprisoned for 10 years.
Visa violators can be sentenced to six-year terms.
Mexicans who help illegal immigrants are considered criminals.
The law also says Mexico can deport foreigners who are deemed detrimental to
“economic or national interests,”
violate Mexican law,
“physically or mentally healthy” or lack the
“necessary funds for their sustenance”
and for their dependents.

Mexico has a single, streamlined law that ensures that foreign visitors and immigrants are:
in the country legally;
have the means to sustain themselves economically;
not destined to be burdens on society;
of economic and social benefit to society;
of good character and have no criminal records; and
contributors to the general well-being of the nation.
The law also ensures that:
immigration authorities have a record of each foreign visitor;
foreign visitors do not violate their visa status;
foreign visitors are banned from interfering in the country’s internal politics;
foreign visitors who enter under false pretenses are imprisoned or deported;
foreign visitors violating the terms of their entry are imprisoned or deported;
those who aid in illegal immigration will be sent to prison.
Who could disagree with such a law?
It makes perfect sense.
The Mexican constitution strictly defines the rights of citizens
— and the denial of many fundamental rights to non-citizens,
illegal and illegal.
Under the constitution, the Ley General de Población, or
General Law on Population,
spells out specifically the country’s immigration policy.
would be a good start

The GOP has to embrace the blacks,gays,immigrants,abortio n rights,womens rights,equal pay for women, elderly,disabled vets,the poor and the homeless..........I think GOP leaders are starting to figure out that their party has no future in its current form. Yet, they do not understand the intricacies of this problem. They know they won't win the White House ever again without being able to carry a significant part of a minority group. They seem to think they can win back the Senate in the 2014 mid-term elections, but know that if they do not, the Senate will be permanently lost to them, too. Which makes immigration reform most likely to pass in next year's lame duck session if they cannot win the Senate. If they win the Senate next year, the pressure than falls squarely on unpopular GOP Tea Party Senators up for re-election in 2016. These Senators will be forced to moderate themselves in 2015-16. How much they will do so is the big question.

Boehner better get it passed or the Republicans are going to have a brutal 2014.
Women are rising up because of the War on Women, African Americans are rising up because of Voter Suppression backlash, now you want to add Latinos because you won't bring a bipartisan Immigration Reform Bill up for a vote in the House?
Keep poking the bear, GOP. You saw how well magical thinking worked for you in 2012.
