On a cool autumn afternoon shortly after 3pm, October 2nd 1998, thirteen-year-old Gregory Witman was savagely murdered. After arriving home from school, Gregory sustained over one hundred knife wounds from a brutal attack that lasted only minutes. Nearly decapitated, little Gregory's head was only held on by the spinal cord, and the murder scene was a blood-bath. On October 10th 1998 Gregory's fifteen-year-old brother Zachary Witman is arrested for Gregory's murder, and all evidence leads directly to him. The small bedroom town of New Freedom located in Southern York County Pennsylvania will play host to a media blitz that will last almost five years. York County has not had a murder that grabbed so much attention and excitement since the famous HEX MURDER of Nelson D. Rehymeyer that occurred November 1928. Unlike the Witman murder however, the murder of Nelson D. Rehymeyer gained world attention with journalists coming from all over the globe to report on that event. Even so, the Witman murder in its own way is just as strange and complicated as the Rehymeyer murder. My investigation started hours after the murder, and it still continues today. Here is my personal evaluation in theory from the information I've gathered and investigated since 10/2/98. This investigation is of my own personal theory and speculation, along with public information to include my medical evaluation of the Gregory Witman murder. Dr. William H. Libershal . On October 2nd, 1998, my daughter was one of the last people to see Greg Witman alive. She had also had lunch with Zach the day before at school. Greg was one year younger and Zach one year older. She was a freshman at Susquehannock High School. That was her first homecoming football game (on FRIDAY the 2nd) and her first homecoming dance (on SATURDAY the 3rd). When she arrived home from the football game on Friday evening she told me that Greg was dead. It had been announced at the homecoming game. Prior to that we only knew that he had been "stabbed". She had also just lost her father to cancer in September of 1996. What a great weekend!!!!! Can't you people just leave New Freedom and the Witman's alone? Maybe you should find a bank to investigate in New Freedom and find out why they are all crooks. They have hurt may people and ruined many lives. Not too many citizens in New Freedom know about this. New Freedom was my paradise but it has since ruined my life and I am still fighting. They will not win. You can read my answer to Fan of New Freedom to get some more insight for your next story. God Bless the Witman's. I hope they recover to the best of their abilities. They not only lost one son but two. Instead of investigating maybe you should pray. You will hear my story soon enough and it can't compare to what the Witman's have been through. However, I will tell you that the class of 2002 was forever changed by the events of that day. I have never seen such a "lost" group of kids that didn't know where to go when they graduated. Some of them made it but the ones that were the most promising are still lost or living a life that they never imagined they would live. I don't know how 2001 and 2003 faired out but I am sure there are catastrophies there as well.
I know life is cruel. I just want you to understand that the people under investigation need to be left alone. I will be more than happy to give you info on the people in New Freedom that need to be hung out to dry when I am able. They will not rest as long as I live -not a threat but a promise. I hope some of them are reading this. May they all burn in hell!

I must say after reading what eyesoblue56 had to say I had to roll my eyes many a times. Let's not focus on a young boy stabbing his brother to death. That's not important! Gosh guys, c'mon! It's more important that I didn't follow procedure & I lost some money. "Maybe you should find a bank to investigate in New Freedom and find out why they are all crooks. They have hurt may people and ruined many lives. Not too many citizens in New Freedom know about this." again, no one knows because nothing ever happened. Let's see I lost my best friend to a gun-shot wound to the head. Unlike those friends of Gregory I got to see my dead friend lying there next to his mother, being able to see the bullet wound. Knowing that wasn't his real hair, and some of his face wasn't his either. But my graduating class sucked it up, and lived life. We didn't let something like that mess us up forever. And to say that your daughter had a terrible weekend because he father died two years ago, what the hell does that have to do with anything? Seriously...tick tock tick tock...oh yeah NOTHING. Maybe you should thoroughly think through what you're writing & realize it doesn't make sense, before you post it & make yourself look stupid. Just a thought on my part. For example: "Can't you people just leave New Freedom and the Witman's alone?" then you go on to rant & rave about how you're about to bring some horrible attention to New Freedom through the media...tick tock tick tock...are you kidding me? Are you the same parent that tells your child, "now honey don't drink or smoke or do drugs, they're very bad for you" as you're puffing away on your little dubie with a glass full of some gin & tonic? Yeah, you seem to be that parent.

You are about as backward as everyone else in this god forsaken area. The gist of my answer was to have people once and for all leave the Witman's alone. They have been through enough. The things I said were to try and let people see how IMPORTANT and SAD that whole situation was and is and what an impact it had on everyone in the community. Most people just wanted to help. There were others who justed wanted to stare and make comments. I don't use drugs and don't drink gin and tonic. I don't begin to compare anything I have been through to what they have been through. Glad your graduating class made out so well and very sorry to hear of your loss. It does sound like you could use some therapy to help work your way through what you saw. As far as the banking issue goes, it is very real. I followed procedures just like everyone else. I just happened to be a victim. I need say nothing further because I really don't care anything about you or what you think.

So you lost your "best friend" to a gun shot wound to the head.... have you lost a husband or father? at least your best friend didnt suffer their death. They didnt have to suffer through months of chemo, or hours of extreme pain and lonilness, or even just minutes of confusion and whatever the hell greg felt. Your not the only person who as lost someone close, espically a best friend. So i guess thats good for you that you were able to move on so quickly with it and get on with your life. Is that what you want to hear? maybe a round of applause? why do you choose to show so much anger towards someone who is merely pleading a break for the little family who has lost so much? they are not bashing on you at all, they even showed sympathy for your loss what pocessed you to respond like that? I live in this shitty little town too and that murder was a huge deal. It changed everything. No doubt that class had a hard time. It was such a brutal murder they were a tight class. I would never have considered your class as close. maybe thats why everyone moved on so quickly.... maybe because it was one of the many other murderes to occur... maybe this town is just use to that. still you should try and be more curtious to other peoples opinions and try not to shoot them down for what they believe...

1996 to 2002 for Southern York County wasn't a great time in our history. About 1 student a year was killed in rather devestating ways. Most of them I knew. The Witman Family lived about 3 streets away from me and I knew them pretty well... May they all rest in peace

And lets now forget that Greg would have graduated in 2003! He was part of MY class. and i dont know why everyone is commenting to harshly on this subject because you never know how you would act until you've been there.

It is quite strange that every year it seems like someone who attended susquehannock dies in some sort of tragic way...We have lost someone from our class every year since Greg's death in 1998..i know for a fact, being a part of the class of 2003, everything changed after that day, everything. I will never forget watching greg get on his bus to meet his fate that awful day. RIP greg.

i agree 100% with you. after greg died things changed for us as a class.. i guess that's when all of us lost our "innocence" all at once. to make a rude awaking that something this horrible could happen to one of us seemed impossible but then in a blink of an eye everything changed and it opened our eyes. RIP greg... class of 2003 will never forget you!!

Before you begin to read I'll let you know that; I am still just a kid, I wasn't here for this murder and I could of misunderstood everything. Better yet this is probably not any of my business. I am judging my statement on what's here on this page. This information might be incorrect or might not be all the truth. So this statement may not make any sense to you and for all I know, I could of made a huge misunderstandment, for I am young and may not be able to comprehend all of this correctly. But I am drawn to speak out my opinion and not bottle it up. Here goes nothing....,
Today I was introduced to the Witman family for just a short momment. It's not like I know them well or anything, but they left me with a mystery of their past that erged me to find this page out of my own curiousity and discover what has been of their past that everyone seems to know about but me. I was surprised that I haven't heard ANYTHING on this "popular" case. I currently attend the school district in which Gregory & Zachary attended years ago. I must say the affect that people said that occurred after the murder has worn off, as well as the talk of it. None of the teachers, school faculty or even parents I know who have been around for the time of the murder have ever mentioned it. The community has recovered from the brutal situation, but maybe there are a few out there who are still in pain.
I must say that we need to RESPECT others decisions on whether to get over this case or not. We shouldn't argue on which decision is better or worse because it all depends on what kind of person you are and what part this murder played in your life.
Secondly, why are we arguing on whether what murder or death was more brutal? The point is ALL MURDERS AND DEATHS ARE BRUTAL AND DEPRESSING! I might have not been through a brutal death of a loved one, fortunantely. But I sure know how to put myself in someone else's shoes and imagine the pain it had to be! Let's end any type of harrasment of the Witman family! May Greg rest in peace and the family recover, if possible!
In conclusion, we all have to RESPECT each others desicions and opinions on this case, and take time to notice what an impact this murder had been. We should let the Witman family alone and free of harrasment and continue on our lives either choosing to forget it or not. Let Gregory rest in peace and the family recover over time!

Unlike you I knew both these boys and their parents. I know this kind of late, but you have no clue as to how we all felt. I had known these boys since the Zach was in gindergarden and before Greg was in school. Our children were in day care together and went to school together. Just the day before Greg walked up the street in front of my house with a cute couple of girls. They said hi and talked for a moment with my daughter. When we heard what happened from a firemen who lived next to us we were in shock. And their poor parents. I ran into Sue in the store and we looked at each other and we both began to cry. I knew they were in so much pain. She was never the same. As for Zach I was in hopes that it wasn't true. And when do you compare loss of life to loss of money. You can always make more money, but you can never bring back a life.
