NATICK — After three years, he is still out there.

The person who killed Stacey Burns gets to walk around, while five motherless kids, a shattered family, and countless friends try to hold themselves together.

‘‘So many people are angry and frustrated,’’ says Stacey’s older brother Michael Keane, 45, sitting in the living room of their childhood home in Natick Friday.‘‘I guess I am, too. That person is living their life. They get to see their children and have joy if they choose. They’ve put our family through hell.’’

Stacey and Michael, just a couple of years apart, were always close. In college, they told friends they were twins. He was always in awe of his younger sister’s incredible energy, and of the way ‘‘she filled everyone’s buckets. She sensed in you if you needed something, and she provided it.’’

She’d pull into her driveway, in Wolfeboro, N.H., where she was raising her kids after a bitter divorce, and neighbors would converge.‘‘For God’s sake, could we just have her for two minutes?’’ her sister Kelly would joke.

Stacey, an elementary school nurse, never burdened her family with her problems —‘‘her tragic trait,’’ Michael calls it. Her brother doesn’t want to talk about it, but divorce papers show Stacey feared her former husband, Ed Burns, and said he had been abusive. At the time of the killing, the two were at odds again and headed back to court.

After the marriage ended, Stacey dated a Wolfeboro logger named Jim Vittum for a year. Stacey had broken off that relationship, but Vittum, a loner and divorced father of two living in his former wife’s basement, refused to accept that, her friends and family said. She tried to convince Vittum it was over, once and for all, the afternoon before she died. But he showed up at her house that night, sitting down to watch a movie with the kids.

‘‘She had bad taste in men,’’ Michael said.‘‘She always did, God love her.’’

Early on Mother’s Day, 2009, Stacey’s two teenage children discovered her body, on the floor beside her bed, stabbed dozens of times. Somebody had slipped into the unlocked house, killed her quickly and savagely, and gotten out.

Police questioned her former husband, who is now raising the couple’s five children.‘‘We believe Ed is not the murderer,’’ Michael said.

Lying and denying, It's an interesting strategy. You want to insult me,embarrass me and destroy me you go for it, but don't blame Stacey! She was well aware of her insecurities and demons and on her way to conquering them.I sure heard her cries for help.Good luck.

If signing her marriage license was signing her death warrant, winning her divorce was winning her children's future. He is fighting hard to reverse the decision. If there is an ounce of justice left in America let Stacey's final accomplishment stand.

why do women stay with, return too and then start other relationships with abusive men ? And how do family members cope with this self destructive behavior, are they, the family in denial? Do these women with "bad taste in men" ever have relationships with good men? And finally, Michael said in his statement that "we believe Ed is not the murderer" Is there a chance that he is STILL in denial? If Stacey's killer is going to get away with this can any lesson be learned,or does this bizzar cycle of abuse and denial have too continue?

A loner living in his former wife's basement? Not the Jim Vittum I know,Stacey DID have bad taste in men, married, creepy, controling men. Which is why she told her friends she had never been with anyone like Jim before. This family can claim "she never burdened them with her problems" but she told everybody else.I wouldn't want to talk about it either if I had to lie. This is a tragic case alright, hows that former husband doing raising those 5 kids? A little reality might just move this case along.Don't hold your breath for that.

Stacey's son Michael spoke out for the first time on May 10th, It was a reality check though his defense of the father was not all that convincing. Thankfully those girls have been removed from his control and hopefully will get the much needed council. While detectives wait for his NEXT mistake.

"she had bad taste in men" this is from her brother ? and they were close ? I confronted Stacey on more than one occasion about her self described "weakness of the flesh". It was the reason her friend Peggy had not spoken to her for 6 months. It wasn't until Ed had made an accusation during the divorce that Stacey had suffered childhood sexual abused by her cousin Steve that we were able to make progress on the subject. There is a book coming out very soon that is going to open a closet that needs to be opened. I'm sorry big brother, but your skelletons are not my problem and your brother-in-law isn't either.

Jim Vittum What gives you the right! You truly sicken me. Stacey's weakness was not being able to get rid of you! Does it make you feel good to speak of Stacey's private past on this very public forum? True sociopath behavior. Don't even dare question her closeness with her brother. Let the book speak and not your filthy guilty mouth. Haven't you hurt her and her family enough? Lay off and go away!!!

Nothing is private in a murder investigation, especially a 5 year old murder investigation. The truth will set you free.It is nice to see someone is capable of emotion. Her brother has called me a killer,I could care less about him. Hopfully some anger will be aimed at Jeff Strelzin someday. He's the guy protecting the killer.I'm not going anywhere, I'm just getting started.

N.H. justice dept. will NEVER make an arrest in this case. Not because they don't know exacty who did it, they knew that in the first 2 hrs. There is no one putting any pressure on them. Jeff Strelzin and Scott Gilbert just suffered a devestating loss in the 25 yr. old murder case of the entire Hina family. Just like Stacey's case they knew who did it but because there was no pressure on them they let it go. Right after Stacey's murder in 09 N.H. took a $600,000 stimulus. handout and with matching N.H. taxpayer funds started a cold case unit.(Oblabla's did it all over the country) Our own Jeffery Strelzin and our own Scott Gilbert (he took over Stacey's lead after Roland quit) were in charge of that $ 1.2 million, they spent most of it on the Hina family case. With no new evidence they rolled the dice and arrested David Mcleod and w/ the help of a corrupt judge had him sit in prison for 3 1/2 years thinking he would take their deal and confess. He didn't ! Last year a week before Christmas the case went to trial. The jury was out less than 8 hrs. and when it looked like they were heading toward aquittal the judge (did i mention he was corrupt) stepped in and declared a mistrial. The AG said "witnesses were inconsistant" (after 25 years, that happens) and Mcleod went home. After that embarrassment and now all the money is gone these losers will NEVER arrest another person w/o either a confession and or an eye witness OR PRESSURE !!!!!!!!! It might take some people to get out of their comfort zone to get justice for Stacey and it's much easier to blame someone else, sit on your ass and pretend you care.

Such a passionate crime without ANY evidence leads us to believe a few things. Stacey's murder was either pre-meditated and EXTREMELY well planned and well executed... the CRIME SCENE was contaminated deliberately or not... the police investigation was inefficent at best or there was a deliberate coverup....... or...........her murder was a proffessional hit.

~ It is natural for Jim Vittum to think Ed Burns drove to NH to kill Stacey and for Ed to suspect Jim. Blood boiled between them already over the beautiful woman they both loved AND her children I imagine ... as the children were good friends. Most people probably easily took sides behind them.

~Add police procedure to look at most obvious suspects, interview many but maybe not with an open mind. There were many possable suspects and unlimited motives. ANYONE is capable of murder UNDER the RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES!!!

~a closed mind is like a closed book !
Someone ELSE may have just gotten away with the PERFECT MURDER.

It's great that everyone keeps an open mind. The very first thing I was told 'in the box' by the major crimes guy was " we come here with no preconceived notions of anything. We don't know anyone or anything. We will follow the evidence where ever it takes us" "and I can tell you from my expirence, we WILL solve this murder". I know for a fact they have solved this murder. No reward has ever been offered, no detective has ever come back to Wolfeboro, no detective has ever contacted the author that claims to have 'new information'. And I find it very telling that Stacey's husband has never spoken about this matter, NEVER ! But the biggest reason I feel confident that the police did a great job and figured out every possible thing there was to figure out is because every time I asked them "what are you waiting for" they accused me. Police are professional liars, the better liars they are the better police they are, and believe me these major crimes guy's are the best. And this was a no-brainer from the start.

Jim don't underestimate how much people care. We don't find it useful to go around bashing the system of law and law enforcement like you do. Truth is you better watch what you wish for, because the person they want to arrest is YOU!!
