Demand rising for officers who speak Spanish
“When you are dealing with a high-risk situation where a crime has been committed, if a person doesn't understand (you), they could get injured or killed as a result”
In scratchy tones on police scanners, the call can be heard occasionally between codes and street addresses: "Spanish-speaking officer needed." Local law enforcers experience language barriers daily, moreso in ... via Lubbock Avalanche

Would the Police Officer be offered more pay since Spanish looks like is the second most spoken language in the U.S? If so were do I sign up to become a police officer.

U.S. POPULATION DEMANDS SPANISH SPEAKERS LEARN ENGLISH.
"When you are dealing with a high-risk situation where a crime has been committed, if a person doesn't understand (you) they could get injured or killed as a result." Think of it as evolution in action. |

I guess that's why Chinatown has many Chinese police officers, maybe it's just me but if I lived in a different country I'd probably watch more P's and Q's a little more. |

Wonderful Idea - my relative is a cop there and he is not bilingual. Anything to keep him safer gets my vote.

EXACTLY, if the offender does not understand English they could get injured or killed. This is the consequence for that should NOT be held against any law enforcement officer. When you come to this country you MUST learn to speak/comprehend English. This WILL be the evolution as many English speaking Americans are fed up with the disrespect. My ancestors came to this country, went through PURE hell to get here, they did not just cross the Rio Grande River and the first thing they did upon the boats to get here was learn English because they respected the people that lived here and their language. |

When my gg grandfather came to America, he learned to speak English in night school so he could get a job and become an American. Where do the Mexicans in Pampa go to learn English - that is, if they aren't school kids?
It's OK to say they should learn the language, but they also need an opportunity to do so. Then they need a reason to take advantage of that opportunity. I'm no racist, but enough is enough. The United States is under seige just as surely as if they were at war because our borders are so fluid. If deportation is not the answer, at the very least, we need to put the illegals on a citizenship path to obtain a Social Security card so so they can at least pay in to the system they'll withdraw from. Finally, they do not have the same rights as US citizens. They cannot fly the Mexican flag above the stars and stripes, or it must come down. You can't be rude to the property owner and expect him to invite you for lunch. This is our yard and if you want to play here, you have to abide by the house rules or go home. |

I find myself agreeing with the bumper sticker which states, "Welcome to America...now speak English."

Almost every immigrant that has come to this country, has learned to speak english, even if it is broken english. We taxpayers have spent billions of dollars on bilingual education that is not necessary in our schools. The Italians, spanish, portuguese, all managed to speak english with out bilingual education. Why is our government and educators so adamant about rolling out the red carpet for mexicans?

most of the comments hit home, why do we as americans have to cater to people from other countries. Take some time and study up on other countries immigration policies they are for the most part what all the liberals here would call brutal, but those countries do not have the problems we have here, and while in their country you screw up you get a ticket home and are not welcome back. We dont need to make this a haven for people who dont even respect the american flag and what it stands for and are just here to reap the benefits they cant get at home..hell even here in the united states if you wanna join the counrty club you gotta pay your dues...come on lets get on the phone to your represenatives and congress and let em know you have had it...being an american indian i stand by the old saying..we were here first...

We don't need more officers who speak Spanish, we need more officers who will arrest illegal aliens and turn them over to ICE. Or, rather, we need city and county officials who will allow officers to enforce current immigaration laws.

First of all you say that your "ANCESTORS" came to this country speaking English already, chances are that they came from England or Ireland meaning that they spoke it with an accent RIGHT? And yet yall talk down on us "MEXICANS" for also speaking with one. Then you say that they RESPECTED THE PEOPLE THAT LIVED HERE AND THIER LANGUAGE. Go back in your HISTORY books and look up who was here first. Then you will see that it was the INDIANS that were here and they were destroyed for their lands. Man if thats what you call "RESPECT" you got life F****D up DUDE! I said it once and I'll say it again, Us "MEXICANS" do everything better, faster, cheaper. We do the jobs that these White punks are scared of. Either way you look at it, their isn't a race in this country that is better then the other, so if YOU don't like "GET!" I'm sick of hearing, go back to where you came from, if you dont like you go back! If I have to go back to my native country then you should have to go back too! And I hope you don't like it!! LOL |

Albeit obtusely, you have obviously learned English, as anyone born in this country would. Why are you making this a race issue? It's a legality, tax, and safety issue; not race. |
