When I was in Florida, used to get nails done at a salon and all the nail techs were Vietnamese -- many of them related to the owner. He would bring them to the US, pay for their nail tech training and then they would work in his shop, where he would get X amount of the money they earned and they would get a portion. Several of the girls worked in that shop for a year or so, and then moved on to other shops -- so I don't think they were "slave labor." They seemed to be content with the arrangement -- the girl who did my nails had a Vietnamese boyfriend who worked at one of the hotels and they were getting married ... so it seemed to me they didn't mind the money arrangement; it got them to the US, gave them a vocation and the ability to work in other shops for more pay, if they chose to do taht after a certain stint in the relative's shop.
But I do imagine there are some people abusing these girls ... who don't have a lot of resources.
There should be more regulation of these shops where girls are being brought in to the country to work in that vocation -- check in now and again, to make sure everything's on the up and up with those girls.
