Those poor women! I can't imagine how scary coming here and then being entangled in a mess like this must have been for them. I was going to look if I could get some gift certificates for Christmas at the nail salon place in the Wal-Mart in East York. I would have felt awful knowing I had done so at a place that used people that way for their shops. I just hope these women get a chance to have a decent life now that this is over!

Nike has been getting away with their sweat shops for years and they are still making millions...
I am sure being forced to do some nails is nothing in comparision to what these workers in Nike factories go through...

I have heard something bout the Nike workshops too. Neither practice is right. It just boggles my mind that in today's world, especially in our country, they are stooping to human trafficing of people forcing to work once here.

nothing new- see it all the time. check out the workers at the local asian establishments. A van pulls up at 10am and 20 workers get out of the van. They work 12-14 hours then go back to their one room apartment where they all sleep on the floor. Living the American Dream!

This is all called human trafficking. It is modern day slavery and it has to end.
Get more information through the gov't at http://www.acf.hhs.gov/trafficking/ .
There is also a York County Human Trafficking Task Force, which is run through the Victim Assistance Center. For more information, call the Center.

As a former (retired) N.Y.P.D. detective who was assigned to the Special Victims/Child Abuse Division for eight years, I know first hand that there is wide-spread human trafficking in New York City. A vast majority of the Korean and Russian nail salons / massage and tanning salons are actually fronts for brothels. The woman are exported from the respective countries with the promise of making better lives for themselves because America is the land of opportunity. A business is set-up to look like a reputable establishment, with body charts, massage tables, a shower and towels. The women usually dress in a smock. They charge a "house" fee for the "massage" and request tips for the "extras" which can range from the masseuse disrobing to full intercourse. The Korean salons are the worst because sometimes the women, sometimes as many as ten, not only work there, but they live there. And when the place is shut down and the women are arrested you don't always hear about the owner being arrested.
The N.Y.P.D. can't close them all because there are so many. And as soon as you close one, five or six more surface.
