I heard from some friends that work for the mayor that the Hope initiative group had a nice Memorial Day festival in the works that would take place uptown after the parade. I don't know the details, but anything would be an upgrade for NC. But then Tish Sledd raised enough hell about wanting to have some Faith, church festival that Hope gave in and canceled their plans. Congratulations Tish, you managed to take a nice, family oriented, non-religious festival that the city desperately needs and get it canceled. So you can have some churchy, sorry excuse for a festival instead. Most of the population of NC has no interest in this kind of stuff. Some of us are comfortable in our beliefs and don't have to be in your face and trying to convert everyone to our brand of religion. In my opinion this town has too many religious zealots. And in my opinion, these people obviously have something missing in their life and publicizing their religous beliefs everyone makes them full better temporarily. People, we need to stand up to the religion bullys that try to force things down our throats.

You know how to solve this? A new, third festival that kicks way more ass than the other two. This festival could have mimes and metal bands and free caricature sketches. It might even have ponies and ostriches. That, my friends, is how to put on a REAL festival that we can all be proud of, instead of this other lame bullshit.

No, so she can let the values of her religion dominate school policy.

Well actually part of this fued over the Memorial Day started with the fact the Jeana Davis did not follow through with request from the Parade Committee. We were ask to follow through the hoops that all the people involved be informed and kept informed with ANY plan, We complied and kept the Chamber people involved and ask the Mayor foe suggestion on the matter a year ago. We ask that the Chamber partner with HOPE and they refused, although they did give granted permission to have it on Monday , the day of the Parade.
The purpose was not to highlight HOPE but to all ALL non-profit groups into to get involved in the festival. We strived to make it a community effort. The planning was in the works and there were announcemnt due to be public in Feb, Well those plans got cut off before the committee could make an announcement. Sad ! We decided that HOPE is not about fighting and sour grapes! HOPE Group is not about fight and getting ahead for just one person or group, It is about dignity for all! HOPE will continue to do as it has in the past and strive to include everyone, not exclude anyone and work for what is good for the community as a whole. The executive committee wishes Mrs. Sledd the best of luck and hope that all goes well for the community. We bow out gracefully !

Eddie you should just shut the hell up and let other people in HOPE do the talking. You give them a bad name. They do some good things but when you open your mouth about it, people think they are all a bunch of idiots, like you. Help them out and just shut the hell up Eddie.

Tish Sledd doesn't even live in the City of New Castle. She lives outside of town on 100 South. So why in the hell should she have any say in anything related to the City? If I were you people in the City of New Castle, I would complain to the mayor and tell all these out of towners to butt out.

So here me now, simple back off and if your are so willing to blow your opinion, let it be known who you are ! Chicken ! Or better yet just come say it to my face! You seem to know where everyone lives, well come on ! Show yourself ! Chicken ! Right ?

Eddie hager seems to be the o ly one one here with enough guts to use his real name. I didn't know about the hope thing, but think it is a great idea. People that find religion offensive don't have to look. There may some people that would really enjoy it. The city absolutely needs help.

right...but I heard the Hope festival was going to include many differenct things...while the faith festival is only going to be religion related. That's fine and all...but it would appeal to much more people if it was a religion neutral event. I have my own religious beliefs, but I don't need to broadcast them to the whole city.

My son came home from school Thurs. and said that some teachers were talking about this Sledd woman saying she though they should be held to a higher standard than anyone else and not smoke drink cuss and of course do drugs. He said the teachers were highly ticked.

Parent says code of conduct needed
Resident alleges teacher immorality, wants New Castle schools to address it

A New Castle parent wants a code of ethics to guide teacher behavior outside of the classroom.

Tisha Sledd thinks New Castle schools need a formal document outlining what's appropriate, what's not and the consequences for immorality. She and a few residents said at a school board meeting that if students are held to a high standard, teachers should be too.

They presented school board members with a list of concerns including teachers allegedly having affairs with one another, being arrested for drunken driving and cursing at students in public.

Sledd proposed that the district form a committee of teachers and parents to look at other codes of conduct and create one for New Castle.

Supt. Steve Fisher and Janet Maxwell, vice president of New Castle's teachers association, said a code is worth looking into, but the district already addresses problems as they arise.

School board President Mark Davisson said he disagrees with adultery but doesn't think it's grounds for firing a teacher. He wanted to know how the district could hold someone accountable for actions outside of their professional duties.

Maxwell said in a phone interview that she doesn't think it's up to the school board to police teachers' personal lives.

"If it's affecting the job or students, that's different," Maxwell said. "But what I do on my own time is really my business as long as it's not against the law."

Sledd brought her proposal to Monday night's school board meeting in an unexpected presentation.

She pointed out that the state department of education lists immorality as a reason for suspending or revoking a teacher's license. But right now, New Castle does not have a formal code or policy outlining what that means and what the consequences would be.

Sledd alleged that students know about what she called immoral activities happening in teachers' personal lives. When those activities aren't addressed, schools send students a message that there are no consequences for immorality, she said.

Teachers should be held to a higher standard because they directly influence children, she said.

"I believe that not addressing the immorality is causing a crumbling in the foundation of our school system," Sledd read from a written statement. "If we sweep these issues under the rug, we are doing a disservice to students."

New Castle High School student Kristen Werking told the board she's seen teachers curse at students or say inappropriate things in front of crowds at sporting events. She doesn't want anything bad to happen to those teachers, but she thinks a line needs to be drawn, she said.

In a phone interview, Maxwell said she believes New Castle has an unwritten code of ethics, even if there isn't one spelled out in teacher contracts. Teachers are hired knowing there could be consequences for inappropriate behavior, especially if it's school related, she said.

She's not aware of a policy outlining what happens when someone is arrested for drunken driving but said schools would handle it in house.

If the board decides to move forward with creating a policy, teachers would want to be part of that committee, Maxwell said.

Sledd's presentation caught Fisher completely by surprise. He said it wouldn't hurt to look into creating a committee or looking at a possible code, but most incidents should be dealt with on a case by case basis.

this woman needs to get a life. She's the typical small town busy body that wants to legislate her morality convictions to everyone else. Usually that means she's got kids from hell and a husband that won't give her any, so doing s&^t like this makes her feel better temporarily. Just from experience, that's the way they usually are...

Another lazy teacher. Only thing I will ever fight for is for lower wages for teachers and a cut in their benefits. The rest of the world has to work the whole year, not 1/3 like you.

Not sure if you know this, but teachers only get paid for the number of days they work, which in most schools in the state is 183. Teachers also spend more hours at the school than they're paid for, like sponsoring clubs, helping students, grading exams and papers, etc. And I know I've spent $1,300 of my own money since 2010 on supplies for my students, materials for the classroom, snacks, and even copies. But don't let that stop you. You keep believing what you want to believe, and I'll keep doing a job where I get to help others and make a difference. If you want to see "lazy," you should come in just for one day and see what goes on. Then you wouldn't say that.
