Man found dead in Norwalk identified

The man found dead behind Water Street's J. McLaughlin Company Store Saturday morning has been identified as Alan Leigh Osselmann, 54.

Born Alan Leigh Stout on May 4th, 1954, Alan was adopted after our mothers second or possibly third marriage, this time to a wonderful man named Guido Osselmann who adopted Alan.
Alan was bright, energetic and typically mischievous as a child. He enjoyed scouting, hiking, skiing, camping and competing. Competing against anyone who was foolish enough to engage him because he was good at most everything he did. Alan graduated high school in Peekskill, NY where he lived with our mother, her husband and their four children. Never really belonging to the family he joined the Army soon after graduation and was shipped off to Boot Camp and then eventually AIT at Fort Hood Texas where it was learned that he was color blind and consequently unable to complete the training Uncle Sam originally contracted him for , so he was honorably discharged after about four months of service. Returning home he was as unwelcome as ever and after a few months he soon found himself looking again to the military for a home and a family. After re-enlisting he was shipped to Fort Knox, Kentucky where he would train, practice, eventually becoming a member of a mechanized armored tank battalion. Alans service career would end a few years later while in Germany. He’d return to the US with a German gal he’d met. They’d marry, get a house, start a business and soon have a son. Being unable to cope with American life she would soon take their son and return to Germany, never to be seen again. His business would fail, his home would be lost. This would start the eventual demise of any type of “normalcy” in his life. From this point .. he would deteriorate to a homeless person living the streets of Norwalk. Not all was bleak though, there were a few bright days in his life. Most revolved around fishing, claming and visits with his brother and his family. After a short stint in North Carolina where Alan had the opportunity to .. and did .. dry out and heal his wounds, he would return to Norwalk where he would begin a new chapter with the help of some wonderful people at 40 South Main. This too would eventually turn out bad and Alan would die in the early morning hours of December 27th, 2008 in a cold, lonely abandoned building on Water Street …

Alan was nice when there was something in it for him or if he thought there might be. He was a predator and a rip-off artist. He was a pathological liar, a cheat and a thief. He was one screwed up kid that never really grew up or beyond his own self-centered world view. He was personally irresponsible and mistreated all the goodness the universe handed him (which was significant) and ultimately the universe paid him back in kind. Rest in peace, Alan. And next time around, try not to be these things, and chances are, you will do much better for yourself and those around you.

Today is the first time I've seen these responces. Not having been a part of the family for so many years, I only know what I saw of Alan. What you say is true, I know from experience. I also know from experience that you and he didn't walk the same paths. I'm glad for you. I tried very hard to help Alan, to show some humanity to our brother .. who as you put .. "was one screwed up kid". Nothing worked. But at least, I tried.

No one was ever really there for Alan, Except his Older brother. You younger brother have no place to talk. You are far from perfect and have MANY of your own flaws. You should take a hard Look at how you treat Family members and the Type of person you are!!
