Mayor Richard Moccia said, "It's amazing how many people don't consider cigarette butts as litter.... If you're going to smoke, don't litter. The only butts we would like to see are citizens walking by and shopping, so don't put that on the ground."
amazing how many don't see the trash as litter once it hits the ground after it is put in the trash can.
Its also amazing how Norwalk puts up with this Mayor.

What can be said the city is a friggin joke, more pictures of this series will surfice showing time and time again this $1500 shoukd of been given to McQuaid money to run for Mayor.
a $1,500 grant from the Stamford-based organization Keep America Beautiful, A cigarette litter prevention program will first focus on Norwalk's beaches, lakefronts and waterways, where volunteers have set up lighthouse-themed cigarette butt waste buckets.
Laminated signs picturing half-smoked cigarettes strewn about the ground will also be posted near the ballparks and washrooms at Calf Pasture Beach, where litter has been a growing nuissance.
The second phase of the program calls on the SoNo business community to participate in keeping Washington Street clean and clear of cigarette butts.
Mayor Richard A. Moccia said litter and speeding are the two biggest complaints his office receives from residents. He reminded smokers that Norwalk has an anti-litter ordinance that gives city officials the power to levy fines.

only a few months ago was trash an issue in Norwalk

Business owners led Mayor Richard A. Moccia and other city officials through SoNo on Monday morning in an effort to correct problems such as litter, potholes, burned-out street lights and crime.
"All of (the business owners) are concentrated on trying to show where improvements can be made, as far as lighting, maintenance, street cleaning," Moccia said afterward. "When that whole area was redeveloped, it was like a beautiful new suit and the suit's starting to fray a little bit on the edges, and we need to get it back up to where it's been."
Representatives of Match, The Loft, Barcelona Wine Bar and Christofor Realty were among the merchants participating in the walking tour that began on Washington Street and ended at the police headquarters at Monroe and South Main streets.
Among the officials representing the city were Moccia, Police Chief Harry W. Rilling, Kathryn R. Hebert, staff person to the city's Parking Authority; Norwalk Redevelopment Agency Executive Director Timothy T. Sheehan; Director of Marketing and Business Development Tad Diesel; and Director of Public Works Harold F. Alvord.
According to the mayor, Rilling talked about extra police patrols and the return of bicycle patrols. The public works director spoke about clean-up maintenance and lighting -- the light fixtures are owned by South Norwalk Electric and Water.
The tour comes at a time when the city is fiscally strapped to provide some services.
For instance, nightly street-sweeping -- a street sweeper once went down Washington Street and other selected streets five nights a week -- won't return because of budget constraints, according to Alvord.
"We used to have a guy that came in between midnight and six and swept certain streets in the city," Alvord said. "SoNo was part of that, but we can't afford to do that anymore."
Alvord said he will check the city's road repair schedule to see whether the rough stretch of roadway along South Main Street, between Washington and Haviland streets, can be repaved this year as sought by merchants.
According to Moccia, part of Monday's tour and talk revolved around what business owners can do, such as sweeping sidewalks, getting landlords and tenants to help clean up trash and ensure that trash Dumpsters don't overflow.
"We need to get them involved and businesses involved to help continue the cleanup," Moccia said.

why are private contractors watering islands when Our own DPW have the water tankers?
Doesn't make sense to hire outside when the city has the resources does it?
