They trot out the same article every few years to take a break from the mainstay typo-filled drivel.
What's with saying it may have been arson? While I do think it was arson on the part of Stratford interests, the official line has always been that 'it was a cigarette'. The cost of repairing the bridge was said to be 30 million dollars, which is the most transparent lie among many.
I remember the park concession building was brand new and quite nice when the bridge burned.

Stratford and Bridgeport need to get federal funds to build a new bridge this year. The island belong to the people and not the birds. Let the birds move to Charles Island with their family and friends.

The officials don't want people back on the island. They continue to lie, claiming the bridge repair cost would be $ 30 million. The reality is that a few beams burned.

I agree with you about the bridge. It would had cost a lot less to repair the bridge if they did it the same year that it was burn.

Yes, it would probably be a lot more difficult now. I was always amazed that the officials got away with this obvious fabrication. It's a pretty neat place, maybe someday I'll kayak out there. You can also explore Johnson Creek and Lewis Gut, which is just referring to the tidal areas behind Pleasure Island.

The officials must have a reason and in due time it will come out why they have not gotten around to rebuild it and I am sure it is not in the public's best interest.

That must have been a pretty big cigarette to burn down that whole bridge. Too bad it was never developed into a casino out there. They could have brought back the carousel and the bumper cars.

I loved those bumper cars. I bet kids today would love them too - much better than any video game, bashing into your buds out there!

I'm assuming it's in their best interest, definitely not the general public's best interest. Cigarrette,: B.S.$ 30 million repair bill: B.S.

I agree with you, friend. The island brought many people joy. There was a dance hall, people live there, other people went swimming and fishing there. I was told that many old coins were found with metal detectors. Go in Peace and Praise the LORD, Amen.

A lit cigarette?? In the number of years that many smokers used to go over this bridge and tossed a lit cigarette don't you think this fire would have started at the beginning just after it was built?
It's only a 250 foot bridge. How much money would it take to replace it? We're not talking about a Golden Gate structure here! I realize that there are huge pipes on the bottom of the waterway that may be a concern but in this day and age I believe that man could build a STRAIGHT bridge, not like the old serpentine bridge that burned down. It would not strain both the Bridgeport and Strarford budgit if they even had a $1.00 toll.
Better idea is to take Obama's money (actually the American taxpayers money) that is going overseas and spend it in THIS country, of which he is supposed to be President. Shouldn't the welfare of the American people be his primary concern? Let's fix up our OWN country first.
And what about the military engineers?
I've seen the Army Corps of Engineers rebuild bridges in Iraq like it was nothing. Why not have THEM build the bridge to the beach? It would certainly save $$$ and wasted time on so-called "feasability studies"!!

you are right on all points....
but if i remember the last days of access to pleasure beach it was a bunch of people getting high.....hookers bringing their tricks down there, and just general mayham, vandals, burglars......so when the "cigarette" burned down the bridge i guess the city said....enough.
and they had an excuse.

Have you seen that blog called 'only in bridgeport' by Lennie Grimaldi ? Just yesterday he was talking about the Donald trump deal that fell apart in the late '80's. The private property owners along the harbor and the private leases on the island were a major deal-breaker. I think they burned the bridge to clear all the people out who were in the way. You know, fuck the people, the deal with city leaders is more important.

Shades of New London/Pfizer.....
