This was a type of Judgement Day. No food or drink were permitted in the 25 hours of the fast and a day of self-denial and introspection.
For Christians, the day was fulfilled in Christ and his atonement. Though there are some Christians who observe it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_observ...
Like many parts of the Jewish faith, the facts of this "holiday" are not well known to non-Jews. The current writer once wrote to a Rabbi with specific questions about Jewish beliefs without getting a response. Let us hope that all facets of the Jewish faith will be open to others so that mutual understanding can be furthered.
