Is Lakeside Worship Center still there? I first
went to that church in 1993 when it was then
called Lakeside Community Church. I heard from
former members that its now in the newer building with Small Steps Daycare and that the old church
building is now a gathering place for young folks.

I heard much to my dismay that many of the old-
-timers have left when the pastor Gerald Penix
announced he was moving the church to the new building. It seemed to cause something of an
uproar among the old members.

Their website no longer exists. Are they still
around and if so , how are they doing?

Lakeside fell apart due to selfish older members. They couldn't accept that the 1950's style church services don't reach younger people. Youth happens to be the future of any religion. Singing all 15 verses of "Just As I Am" & guilting folks into public confession (altar calls) are not good vehicles to spread love and truth. Frankly, they never were. This older Christians in Scioto County are obsessed with the Cal Ray Evans/Rubyville experience: Popularist, cliquish, and caste. Any deviation from the Baptist Dogma (whether denominational or not) is unacceptable. New concepts are viewed as heresy, and debate is non-exsistent. What happened at Lakeside is what has happened at many churches here. Gerald did nothing but attempt to modernize the service and reach out to the youth. The older membership cared more about tradition than to reach out to others.

I realize that the church split over certain
issues as going contemporary but the main
question is, is it still there?

Yes,it is still there. Pardon my rant. I have watched countless churches go down this road. Gerald still holds services in the new building. He happens to be a good friend of mine.

Amazing pastor and fellowship at this church. The big split/ falling out had nothing to do with anything like that's been said on here. They opened a daycare and sold the pews to help fund it was the story I got out of it. I still go there . Church every sunday::-) Mr Penix and Joy are some of the best people ive ever had the pleasure to meet. Anyone who has met either will tell you the same thing

Several other churches are going through the same thing because of their reluctance and/or flat out refusal to gear some of their programming toward youth. I don't have anything against the Cal Ray Evans/Rubyville deal if that's what people want, but that church is a multi million dollar operation....never attended there but I do know it sponsors several activities including that big fireworks every year for anyone who wants to watch.....Christ Community does a lot of things, from some Holloween give-aways to many other events and it looks to be a million dollar organization too....Cornerstone has really geared toward youth and you can see the big bucks in that one.......and some have traditional and contemporary services......a lot of these smaller churches are cliques too, but older cliques....the old folks only want things to stay the way they were 100 years ago when their parents went there and they occupy church boards and decide everything.....as a result they are barely surviving financially, no young members, and when they are there, they are to be seen not heard.....Lakeview made an attempt to change. The older crowd didn't want it, fought it, and then took their money and left. I hear the place is in big time debt now and for sale. Too bad because I agree the Penix people are good people. I hear the First Church of God in New Boston is almost to the same place. The old people wont allow the young to do anything and people are leaving right and left. That place is beautiful. And almost empty.
