FAIRHAVEN — Recounts have been scheduled for the Planning Board and Board of Health elections for Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
The health board race has been a point of continued controversy as officials reported multiple errors, including the double counting of some 45 ballots and the premature swearing in of challenger John Wethington before all votes had been counted.

A later count gave the win to incumbent Peter DeTerra by two votes, but that is now being questioned with news last week that the number of voters checking into and out of polls on election night did not match.

In the Planning Board race, John Farrell leads opponent Kathy Melanson by six votes.

Both recounts will take place at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Fairhaven Town Hall.

Town Clerk Eileen Lowney said she decided to hold the recounts on separate days to avoid further errors.

On Friday, the Secretary of State's office announced it was investigating possible errors that occurred after polls closed.

Secretary of State spokesman Brian McNiff said the office would not supervisie the recount but has "given the town specific written instructions on how to handle it."
