New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal Where is It ???

Where is the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal ? The construction was to start in the middle of April (last month). The wind turbine project is on hold for another year and looks doubtful that it will ever get off the ground as more and more people become aware of the poor economics and the high cost of this type of renewable energy .
The question before us now is what happened to the terminal in New Bedford . The spin is that the project is off until 'some time this summer ". This is like the "I'll get back to you later on this one".
The politicians and the media spun this ocean wind turbine port as if 1000 people in New Bedford would get jobs - What has really happened ? They hired a Tacoma ,Washington engineering firm to build the port (no one from New Bedford) The money came from 1.2 million dollars of EPA dredging funds and not one person in New Bedford got one cent in earnings !
The facts need to come out !Where are the jobs !
"Cape Wind will create over 1,000 new jobs. Last October, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick announced the creation of a new multi-purpose Marine Commerce Terminal in the port of New Bedford that will be the first facility in North America designed for the staging and assembly of offshore wind turbines and Cape Wind will be this facilitys first customer. In another recent jobs announcement, Middleboro-based Mass Tank in partnership with German-based EEW have announced they will open a new manufacturing facility in Massachusetts to supply Cape Wind with monopile foundations and transition pieces."

How did they use over one million dollars of New Bedford Harbor EPA dredging funds to hire a Tacoma ,Washington engineering firm to build the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal ? This terminal is being built at taxpayers expense for a private ocean wind contractor ?
"New Bedford is Cape Winds designated hub for offshore wind staging and assembly. Kristin Decas, executive director of the New Bedford Harbor Development Commission, says the port was selected for its lack of obstructions and proximity to Cape Wind, which is sited in Horseshoe Shoal, Nantucket Sound, off the coast of Massachusetts.
In an unusual turn of events, dredging for an Environmental Protection Agency cleanup in its coastal waters helped streamline approval for construction of the terminal facility, Decas says. Decas expects EPA approval for construction by mid-April, with work beginning in June and ending in December. Apex Engineering, Tacoma, Wash., is engineer for the project."

Gov: New Bedford to stage Cape Wind project
By Jay Fitzgerald
Wednesday, October 20, 2010 - Boston Herald General Economics Reporter Jay Fitzgerald has been a journalist and blogger for years. He's now the general economics reporter for the Boston Herald.
Stung by criticism over the high cost of the Cape Wind project, Gov. Deval Patrick will announce today that some of the jobs for the proposed wind farm will be based out of New Bedford.
The governor, who is a huge backer of the controversial Cape Wind, is scheduled to appear in the port city this afternoon to say that New Bedford will serve as the staging area for the giant offshore construction project.

The proposed New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal is next door to the abandoned toxic Cannon Power plant with the most toxic marine environment in the US.
The House in 1996 passed a plan that contained $300,000 to study the possibility of converting the toxic abandoned New Bedford power plant. The Cannon Street clean up documents already exist and are said to weigh twenty pounds.
Most private or nonprofit groups are unable to build any project on the site of Commonwealth Electrics closed Cannon Street power station which contains fuel oil, tar, coal tar, cyanide, lead paint, asbestos, guano, asbestos, mold and heavy metals. No one wants to have to pay for the clean up of the site
This is the proposed Marine Commerce Terminal PDF:
Potential impacts to site soil and groundwater from a suspected 150,000-gallon fuel oil
underground storage tank (UST) potentially located on the subject site, and former USTs in the vicinity of the site.
A June 1920 Acushnet Mills map prepared for the Plan Department of the Associated Mutual Insurance Companies indicates that a 150,000-gallon fuel oil UST was formerly located on the subject site. TRCs determination was based on a scaled overlay of the aforementioned 1920 Acushnet Mills map over a current City of New Bedford land parcel map. In addition, the site of a former 550-gallon gasoline UST associated with the former mills is located approximately 30 feet west (upgradient) of the subject site.

Sept 12,2012 - Still NO word on the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal ?
In 2010 it was going to cost 35 million ! In 2011 it was going to cost 65 million !
Any day now the EPA will come out with the guidelines. Has anyone ever thought why no one built in this area since 1935 ?
My bet the toxic clean up will exceed 200 million alone . The South Terminal is next to the Cannon Street Power Plant. The water in this area has the most toxic marine environment in the United States !

October 1 2012 -Two years after Gov Patrick said :
"Well, by God, the city of New Bedford is going to be known again as the city that lights the world."
Where is the beef ?

The beef is still out to pasture ......

Where is it ? It is in the same place as the Oceanarium, train to Boston , the
Casino, the Boathouse on the Acushnet for rowers, The Palmers Island cleanup and a number of other projects. Nothing ever happens.

New Bedford will announce the terminal on or around October 20 ! The terminal will never be built just like the rail project !
They use these announcements as a voting tactic !
What's good for Massachusetts goes to Boston not a bunch of hicks in the Bayou of Massachusetts .
My bet is on Quonsett Point

The New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal now has a price tag of over 100 million dollars !
#13 Nov 9, 2012
And in typical New Bedford style, this project will never happen. It will go to the New Bedford Project graveyard like all the other projects that were proposed over the last 20 years. There is talk about RI getting the terminal.
