“People come in and say, 'This is what we remember about Germany. Where have you been all these years?'”

Roemer Topf Restaurant and good cheer,' Robert's sister Renate Gray said in a thick accent from the Bavarian region of Germany.

She helped him bring out plates of roulade and sauerbraten.

Roulade is rolls of roast beef stuffed with bacon and diced pickles. Sauerbraten is tender beef covered in a tangy vinegar sauce. Both come with spatzle, homemade German noodles. Other popular side items include potato pancakes and red cabbage. Read more

Service is slow or not much at all.
Food is over priced for the portions.
Better value at Dreamland Palace down in Foster Pond.
Trying to capitalize on Scott AFB people, but not worth the trip to Mascoutah.

Food is tasty, but small portions for the price.
Service almost none. We had to get up and find own silverware and napkins.
If your looking for a real German style atmostphere this is not the place, just a converted golf clubhouse. Not worth the trip to Mascoutah for this one. Caters mostly to Scott AFB personnel.

We LOVE this restaurant. The atmosphere isn't Bavarian-hunting-lodge, which I find a relief. the portions are great for the price and the taste is authentic. The service can be slow, depending on who you have, but some of the wait staff is really great.

This is a great restaurant. The staff is very friendly, and the waitstaff dresses in authnic German Drindls during special events. I must disagree with the first post, as the hostess gives the customer their silverware and menu when they are seated. Maybe they forgot to wait to be seated as politely noted, and were not noticed right away. Te portions are very good, and the price is half of that of other authenic German restaurants in the St. Louis area. We had the Schnitzel and Roelade, which were prepared fresh just like we received while stationed in Germany. We have also noticed a great inprovement in the ambiance, as we heard that the owners just purchased the property. We have started receiving their email, and it looks like their live music will start back in March. We recommend reservations on the weekends, as the food is prepared fresh, and therefore for authenic food prepared from scratch, it can take up to 30 minutes when they are busy. The wait was not bad, as they sered our apptizers, salads, and bread durring this time. I was very refreshing not to fill rushed as we do in the chain restaurants that reheat frozen food!

They now have four German Biers on tap, and I believe ten others in bottles. Once again we try to visit the Restaurant at least once a month, and we feel that the drive from Springfield Il., is well worth the drive.

When I moved from germany into the US, Renate dident just gave me a job she made me part of her famelie. I think their should be more like the greys in this world. And as a member of that famelie I am very ofendet by what you are saying.
I work at the roemertopf
about 5 days a week and can ashure you that we do ouer best to make ouer costemers happy!!!
I mostle get very good feedback, about the food and the service but we cant make everybody happy. We apreciate feedback wats however, good or bad. But keep your insults for your self. I am shure not everybody loves you so much or you would have left a name. Lets just call you a chicken.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Martin Luther King Jr.
Only a coward in comfort and convenience with nothing better to do with what he is able to read in the papers would connect the dots to the parents who are trying hard with all of life's challenges on their backs to keep this restaurant a success. I am proud and very thankful for having them. I pity such a person who would comment on his/her issues with the family as opposed to leaving feedback about a restaurant. We aren't all as fortunate to having a trouble free and perfect life such as yourself.
Back to the topic at hand. My name is Thomas and I'm a server here. I encourage all with the slightest intrest in German food to come and find out for yourselves. Reading other's opinion may give you an infactual idea about the restaurant and such feedback could be driven from outside sources or bias against us in the first place. We are still newly operational (just under 2 yrs) and trying hard to please all but I will say it's been difficult and a long journey. We are building up our German atmosphere bit by bit and intend many good things in the year ahead. I suggest coming out and making up your own mind because the food is legitimate and authentic, and take my word we are trying to work out the kinks in order to please everyone. It is in our fullest intention to rid you our troubles and focus on improvement. Thank you and I hope to serve you and family/friends in the days to come. Take care und Auf Wiedersehen. Vielen Dank!

I think it all depends on what cook you get. One, I think is the part owner, is horrible. Small portions and always different and most of the time burnt. The other is pretty good as I go there on Wednesday nights mostly. I know a waitress there and the horror stories I hear I just don't know. I make sure I hand the waitress the tip personally as they have a habit of not getting it and once after a large party we put a tip in for the kitchen staff and they didn't get a penny of it (over a $100). They seem to treat their staff as they treat their customers where one is given special attention but if you are not high brass or joe blow you have less attention and food. With the staff it seems if you are in bed with the family you get free food and basically can do what you want, but non-sleeping staff get the shaft with no raises in years and shorted on help. From inside info i know they don't use proper cleaning of the dishes and get little help if the part owner is not cooking. They have these authentic German outfits they make the waitress's wear that never get washed and after each shift they have to wear what someone else wore the day before. Just dirty. This place is going down hill bad and I know alot of us from SAFB just stopped going which is a shame. I think they have alot to learn when it comes to treating people fairly and equally.

I went and tried this restaraunt for the first time a few weeks back. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the waitress was excellent and very helpful. I never ate German food before and didn' know what some of it was. My waitress gave me recommendations and explained everything to me. She was very patient and Renate is always pleasant as I have been friends with one of her older sons for years. So what if her kids made bad decisions. It is not a reflection on her or the restaraunt. Parents cannot be held accountable for every dumb action their child takes. I actually left there proud to live in Mascotah and to see there is a place like that in town. There were old men in front playing cards and music playing. A large family was in there eating and having fun. I plan on going back and would recommend it to anyone it is worth the drive to Mascoutah. I work with about 300 women and a lot of them know I am from Mascoutah and rave about Roemer Topf so make your own opinion!!

Background: I lived in Germany for more than 10yrs on the German economy with a German family. Learned to cook authentic and still cook many German dishes to this day.

Pros: Great atmosphere. German Beers on the Menu, Great attempt to bring a little German back to the US.

Cons: The food isn't worth the price. The pork schnitzel were paper thin. For 12-14 dollars, I expect more than a piece of meat that I have to literally search for underneath a pound of sauce. The cordon bleu was made from what tasted like packaged meat you get from any store with a slice of cheese of similar quality.

I ordered the sampler plate so we get 3 different schnitzels yet each were paper thin, really paper thin. Each about 3x3 inches, around, and no more than 1cm thick. These 3 infantile pieces of meat were smothered in 3 different types of sauces. The red cabbage (rote kraut) was drenched with cinnamon. You could not get past the cinnamon in the dish. I had more red cabbage than meat. I've tasted better from a jar. The egg noodles (spatzle) were dry but the only thing I could eat since I had extra sauce. But it was not worth the $14 if that was the only decent item on the plate.

The side salad was a regular lettuce salad, which fit on a dessert plate or bread plate. It was not fresh, nor does it look like the restaurant web site's photo. I saw no fresh seasonings atop of the salad.

The main thing is that even without a full restaurant, it took us an hour from the time we ordered to get our food.

It would be cheaper to order my dish through the internet and cook it myself, plus it would taste better. We went out of our way to find this restaurant with high hopes. I saw the ad in FEAST magazine. I would not recommend this restaurant because of the food portions, the timeliness of food delivery, and the price. I can only rate it for the German theme and feel once you enter.

We went for my birthday, hoping to find good German food. I am from Munich, but am open to all variations of German cuisine. We were seated promptly..next to a wall with multiple food stains on the wall, and the seats and table cloths have rips. We ordered Bavarian Leberknödel Soup, which was tasteless. The Cheddar Pints appeared to be mozzerella, not cheddar. The food comes..my mother's sauerbraten is so tough it could be used to patch a roof, and tasted burnt to a crisp. The spaetzle is reheated in a pan, leaving scorch marks on the noodles, which are dry and had no flavor. The red cabbage has no taste. My rouladen is dry, tough, and lacks any flavor, with an almost raw piece of bacon hidden inside. German cooking has vinegar, none was tasted, only the charred remains of a dead cow. My son ordered salmon, which was served burnt and had an overly fishy smell, and was gray. The food was so bad, our meal was comped. The owner was rude, insisting that maybe we were in the wrong venue, and quickly dismissed us, adamant that this is how food should be cooked. WRONG! NEVER will we return. I have no clue why people go here, maybe they have no inclination of what acceptable German food is to be like. I will tell you this, it should not be burnt, charred, dry, and flavorless...choose wisely!

They ever make the loser dishwasher put a hairnet on that tangled crap? He's a manly man slinging them dishes around. I wouldn't take a dead dog to that place with that nasty hairy asses dude in the back. Oh and is it part of the job description to take bong hits on the breaks?
