The recent Rally in honor of Cheryl Kenney, brought her case back up into the public's awareness. It is very sad that the City of Nevada wasn't forthcoming with the Proclamation they said they would deliver. This year marks the 20th year of Cheryl having gone missing from a convenience store where she worked in Nevada Missouri.

I offered the Nevada Daily Mail CASH to print an open letter to the community and area law enforcement. No bite.

I think even small town journalists should be just as diligent in their investigations and representing all points of view. There is sooo much they dont tell here, it's clear that the small town minded 'politics' get in the way.

At the very least the new Police Chief should have been there to make a statement and make an appeal for types. It wasn't about taking sides;it was about showing respect and being involved in the actions of the community you've been elected to protect.

The bottom line is they cant and wont answer the list of questions put forth to them. The investigation was bungled 20 years ago in not impounding Cheryl's car or dusting for prints anywhere. Instead her car was driven away the very next morning by her husband.

The remains found in 2000 should have been collected and examined by the Vernon County Coroner, he was never called. It is the County Coroners job to complete the investigation and enter the remain stats into the NamUs database, he didnt do this. He said so himself, he never got to see the remains. They were collected by incompetent officers, stored and handled wrong.

Anyone who looks at the bust of the 'male' remains and compares them with the picture of Cheryl and her son, can see they all have the same nose, jaw line and two crooked top teeth.

Its time to make up for the mistakes made 20 years ago and do it right.

See the transparency of Cheryl Kenney and the 'unidentified male' remains here:

P.S. The Mayor of Clinton Missouri came to the Rally with his wife to say a prayer.

He is bending over backwards along with the rest of Clinton Mo to ready for a rally in April for Missing Person Angela Hammond that disappeared from Clinton the same year.

Its not about taking sides, its showing support to solve a case and raise awareness!

My unanswered email to the editor:

To Whom it should concern:

First of all, I was born and raised in Nevada Mo. As a supporter for the Missing and their loved ones, I was thrilled to attend the Cheryl Ann Kenney Rally.

I was told by multiple sources that Feb 27th would be proclaimed Cheryl Ann Kenney Day, that the Mayor and NEW Sheriff would be in attendance to make

the proclamation and to show support, advocate for tips etc.

Neither showed! No reason, no notification, no apology. Four Nevada PO's eventually showed and wandered along the edges of the lot where the rally was held. And no more.

Calls to the City Hall have been made, and no one can get past the clerk. Everyone is told that no such proclamation was ever in th,e works and no city official had ever promised their attendance. And that the city didn't want to 'show a bias' in the case, never mind showing support. The Mayor of Clinton Missouri (where Angela Hammond disappeared) was kind enough

to attend and say a prayer.

Two Joplin stations showed to do pieces and were shown pictures of Cheryl to compare with the bust of 'male' remains found in 2000. Both could see the resemblance

of the bust, Cheryl and her son Joshua. Same nose, mouth, teeth and jaw line.

Nevada police have every excuse for not retesting the bones and skull found. The skull itself was never tested. No one will admit that the skull and bones could have

been mishandled or stored inappropriately. This from a force who did not impound Cheryls car or dust it for prints before turning it over to Walter Kenney.

They have never gone to Mr. Kenney and asked him to see Cheryl's car and the key he used to start it, when even he admits Cheryl had the only set to.

Why did Mr Kenney state in 91' that he had a key made for Cheryl's car the next morning and now, in 2011 says he happened to have a key of another year, make and

model that mysteriously unlocked and started her car? Who supposedly made this key for him in 91'?

If they are starting a 'new investigation' with 'fresh, new eyes', why are there old eyes on it? Why do they need to read some 1,100 documents wrote 20 years ago that

could create a bias instead of starting at square one, as such in the start of an investigation?

Why haven't they re-canvased the field where the 'male' remains were found? Why in the world have they NEVER used a metal detector out in that field in attempts to find

jewelry or other objects that may have belonged to this person, or the bullet that killed them?

Missouri Missing posted HUNDREDS of Cheryl Posters, advertising the rally all over Nevada(in accordance with city codes) only to have them vanish over a 24 hour period.

Do the City Officials not care? Is it because Cheryl wasn't an 'important', affluent member of the community? Is it because her son, Joshua Darnell has tattoos and the same two crooked top teeth as his mother, Cheryl and the bust of the 'male' remains?

Why was Cheryl's case handed over to the Missouri State Highway patrol? This has only happened in one other Missouri Case, because of an officers involvement.

So why ?

There are so many why's that the City of Nevada has the answers too and won't speak of.

It's excuses and dithering. Can they not admit that mistakes were made in the past? Can they not make it right by putting their heart and soul into 'finding' Cheryl (whom they already

have) and investigating her killer?

Will no one else advocate for her and her family?

We may never know. I do know that I am thankful to have escaped such small minded people, and I am thankful to not have gone 'Missing' from Nevada MO.

Marla Hansen

PS I would PAY to have this printed in its entirety in the Nevada Daily Mail along with the picture of Cheryl Kenney and the 'unidentified male' remains found in 2000

Why is it so difficult for anything to get solved around here? Is there a sign at the city limits that says..."come on in kill someone, abduct someone, don't worry about being caught?" Good Lord!

According to the Jan 13th 2000 issue of the Daily Mail, there was enough human tissue found for DNA, and it was sent out for testing. What happened to those results? All they would need is those results and Josh/Kristi's to compare.

I don't know what happened. I was hoping someone else knew.I heard they took DNA from the bones. The story also says that there was enough dental area to compare dental records. Was that ever done? These are questions I would like to see answered.

After this weekends turn of events....I WILL PERSONALLY SEE WHAT CHARGES I CAN FILE AGAINST THE CITY OF NEVADA AND ANY OTHER ORGANIZATION OF THIS STATE THAT HAS BEEN DISRESPECTFUL AND DOWN RIGHT CRUDE. As I told the Chief of Police I have been in contact with the US DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE and THE WHITE HOUSE personally. I am in the process of writing out a letter of ALL chronological events that have been said and done by this town and the state, also I note that I will let Nevada PD try again! If I have my civil rights violated one more time by any official I will get in contact with the ACLU. It's time to stand as a community and make sure things like this don't get covered up! Thank you all for your support that attended the rally and the one's who were unable to attend that support us in our fight for our RIGHTS!

The Highway Patrol only states that they only have the skull and bones found there. They only got DNA from the bones found in the same area. They state that you can not get mitochondrial DNA from a skull. There was a picture in one of the papers that show that skull and it only, I really would like to see that picture again and see if the skull they have is still the same one or if they accidently replaced it!

I sent the following letter to the members of the city council, the mayor and the city manager this morning:
Mayor and Council Members;
Below you will find a copy of the Letter to the Editor that was emailed on Tuesday.
Regardless whether the letter is printed or not, I want to make sure that each of you receive a copy of it.
I am at a loss as to what happened here but I will assure you that I did not misunderstand anything in my conversations with City Clerk Annette Crews.
In fact, I have very detailed notes that I took throughout our conversations. And, as noted in the letter, the press release regarding the Rally was sent out six days after my last conversation with her.
Had she, in any way led me to believe the city was NOT going to prepare the proclamation, the press release would have been written quite differently.
In regard to the City Manager's comments to the Nevada Daily Mail on Tuesday, first let me say that was the first time I heard anything about a crime victims proclamation in lieu of individual proclamations. That was never part of my conversation with the city clerk.
Secondly, the comment regarding the case being an open investigation and the "city intentionally stayed away to avoid controversy" is absolutely ludicrous.
Each of you know that declaring a proclamation is nothing more than a declaratory statement. It does not, by any stretch of the imagination, burn anything into stone from here to eternity nor does it mean that the city or its council members and employees are taking sides on anything.
Might I remind each of you that 20 years ago a woman was taken from YOUR community.
Might I remind each of you that 20 years ago, two small children lost their mother to absolutely no fault of their own.
You may think that your stance on this situation is "the best way to handle it" but each and every one of you have essentially smacked these two children in the face. They are the victims in this situation and your actions made a mockery of that.
Just for the record, I have had proclamations, just like the one your city neglected to do, prepared by several communities in Missouri for cases much older than Cheryl's.
The City of Eldon, the City of Cape Girardeau, and the City of Clinton will be issuing a second proclamation for Angela Hammond in a month.
But the City of Nevada refuses?
In fact, the Mayor of Clinton drove to YOUR city to pay his respects to the family of Cheryl Ann Kenney and he offered the invocation at the very rally that you opted to avoid.
The proclamation for Cheryl Ann Kenney was a very important part of Sunday's Rally and it meant the world to her children. And for them to be ignored, without even so much as a courtesy call, is worse than disrespectful. Then to follow that with outright lies is absolutely unbelievable.
As I state in the following letter, I do not believe that any family in this situation, or any situation of crime, should have to suffer such extreme disappointment from their own community.
I KNOW that my conversations with Ms. Annette Crews were exactly as I say they were. Why she is backtracking and why this is being pushed away is something I can't answer.
But I believe at least one of you can...

This is the letter to the editor that was emailed to the Nevada Daily Mail on Tuesday:

Dear Editor,
In working with families of the missing for the past several years, I have encountered a plethora of emotions. But on Sunday, Feb. 27th, I witnessed the one emotion that no family should ever have to deal with and that is extreme disappointment.
For several weeks prior to the Cheryl Ann Kenney Rally on Feb. 27, I personally set the plans in motion for the event on behalf of her children, her family and her friends. I spoke with Nevada City Clerk Annette Crews on two separate occasions regarding a proclamation to declare that day as Cheryl Ann Kenney Day. On both occasions I was assured by Crews that there was no problem and that the city was happy to do the proclamation.
Ms. Crews even went so far as to ask for contact information for Cheryl’s son so she could ask him questions about Cheryl in order to personalize the proclamation. Ms. Crews assured me on Feb. 15th that someone from the City would be at the Rally to present the proclamation to Cheryl’s children. Six days after that conversation, I personally sent out a press release to every news outlet in the state.
I was never notified by the City of Nevada that a proclamation would not be presented. Ms. Crews was given more than one way of contacting me and not once did she even make an attempt.
I am at a loss as to why the City of Nevada and Ms. Crews are now backtracking and stating that this was never promised.
As the Executive Director of Missouri Missing, I have organized numerous rallies such as this one and never encountered such a problem. The City Manager’s statement that this is an open investigation and the city did not want to take sides through a proclamation is absolutely ludicrous.
It is Missouri Missing’s mission to host rallies in every community across the state where there are missing persons. Thus far, the City of Nevada is the only one who has pulled such a shenanigan.
In regard to the Nevada Police Department, I would like to offer Kudos for their involvement in providing security at the rally and for the police escort to city limits afterwards. We truly appreciate their efforts in making sure everyone attending the rally was safe.
