I’m responding to the letter of frustration written about Child Protective Services in Nevada County. I too have recently had to deal with them and felt like I was talking to a lifeless, unemotional robot who was more concerned with the law than she/he was for the safety of a child. I was under the impression that CPS was the organization that fought for a childs rights and safety. We’re always told to report a situation we have knowledge of but from a recent personal experience of trying to do so, I hit a solid wall of unconcern from CPS. They said they had 10 days to respond to my report of possible abuse but said that in all honesty they probably wouldn’t even pursue it or have time for it.

I think it is absolutely terrible that a child gets lost in ‘red tape’ and ‘the law’ and cannot be saved from a life of abuse and drugs and neglect. In the time it could take for the law to work, this child may have to endure things that no child should ever have to experience! This particular child has lost his/her joy and innocence and is only 5 years old!

It absolutely breaks my heart but what can be done??? It sounds like new laws should be made that put the childs welfare first, perhaps? Or possibly find people who actually care about children and will fight to protect them and will put some real effort into getting them out of horrifying living conditions!

Needless to say I was very upset and disillusioned with CPS and the Court System in Nevada County. It’s sad to say but it’s our young children who are suffering and forgotten because it seems easier for CPS to hide behind laws and ignore the real problem of helping innocent children who cannot help themselves! Is CPS being negligent in dealing with this situation? Who can we turn to for help if not “Child Protective Services”?

I haven't even been thru it, but I know that I will hit a brick wall as you have. Sure they don't really care, as long as they get their bi-monthly paycheck. Silly me, thinking we live in a small town, Truckee, that CPS will be there for our kids. Already talked to attorney's & they just shrug it off like it is nothing & say CPS will do nothing.
Yes, PLEASE, who can we turn to for help...except this lifeless govt. serv? They don't even deserve the paper their paycheck is typed on....just waiting for their retirement @ the expense of our kids. Don't they know our kids will be their nightmares when they are senior citizens? May not care now, but they will one day all too soon.
God Bless you for writing & taking the time!

Dear Disillusioned,
I can tell you that there was, at one time, Social Workers with CPS that really cared and would go the extra for a child and family.
You're right! All too often, the sicial workers forget that it is their responsibility to gather information and provide service. They are not to judge or conclude anything until intervention, investigation, and links to service providers are provided.
Unfortunately, this county has abused, used, and lost social workers that really cared.
I feel for our community and county. The governmental red tape as well as unethical enforcement....or should I say non-enforcement of laws that protect children as well as the rights of the family has really become apparent at Nevada County CPS.
The only way to continue to draw attention to this before another child is seriously hurt or killed is to continue to report concerns to the Grand Jury. When one report is filed, another should follow. DON'T LET UP!!!!!!!
Nevada County CPS has lost it's accountability......let's not allow that to cost us the life of a child.

Several years ago I reported a case to nevada county CPS (maybe 6 years) and got the same response. They did say that they had gotten other complaints about this family and had "offered services" but the family refused the services. There was nothing they could do. One of the children of this family and now dead and I will always wonder if there was something that could have been done.
God Bless everyone who continues to help children even when systems that we pay to protect children cannot!4720

I have been dealing with cps. All of my children have reported consistent stories of abuse. CPS unsubstantiates cases based on lack of evidence in which the court interprets this as the accused being innocent of abuse. Although, they have proir court cases regarding the abuse this man has done to children, pictures of bruises, and 2 children begging to go home to mommy, they still have not enough evidence. The courts took 2 of my children based on CPS unsubstantiating allegations allowing the court to state possible "parental allienation" on my part. Amazingly, I was allowed to keep my other children. They only took the two younger helpless ones. During this divorce I have had all of my children for a year and a half without their father even seeing them. Not one call was made to CPS regarding me.( I don't abuse my children) The father has had the 2 younger ones for 2 months and already CPS has been called twice and NOT BY ME!! When will CPS wake up and save these children. OH, yeah, after they are dead or near dead as I noticed on their own website!!!!!!!!

Oh, forgot, this man was accused several times of attempted sexual abuse of my daughters. CPS closed what was called a "grooming stage" case due to lack of physical evidence. WHAT PHYSICAL EVIDENCE WOULD THERE BE IN A GROOMING CASE? DUH!! These people are not there to protect children. They close a case based on lack of something that never would have existed in the first place. GOD BLESS CHILDREN

dear frustrated in nevada,\
I am going thru somthing similar to your case, my ex husband has started a case against me (simply cause he wants me to SUFFER) a year ago, Im constantly in court over every little allegation. My 11 yr ol daughter KNOWS that shes now in control over me & my parents whom I live with, with my kids. If she doesnt get her way or is mad at any of us, she threatens to tell her social worker that I or whomever "HIT" her!!! and she has & the social worker documents it & adds it in court papers. I dont knpw how to finally get the case closed/. my ex husband & the cps lady are like best friends now. they talk or email daily!!! HE sends her emails from me from wayyy back in the past before the cps case when we used to argue about the kids...the emails he sends are just ones from me after he provoked a huge fight out of me, he never sent the emails he sent me first/, a few months ago I got in a fist fifht with my ex`s current girlfriend (that she started) & the next day the social worker took my kids away cause my ex reported it & said I started it!!! I SNAPPPPPED!! I couldnt stop crying I hyper ventilated they had to call EMTS to my house & everything! I tried to make my self go to sleep so I could stop crying & I took 2 of my anti anxiety meds Im perscribed & went to bed...after I was in a deep sleep the cps lady called me to check on me & I was half asleep & told her I was sleeping & hung up. she THEN put in court papers that she believes I abuse my meds & therefore am unfit to care for my kids properly!!!! its so out of control & I am so broke from my divorce I cant afford a good lawyer & my public defender is very mellow & not aggresive enough for me, Im so scared...my ex is relentless at making me suffer & lose my kids cause he cant get over me!!!
HELPPP!! any advice???

I have been working with Nevada County CPS since June of 2008. Since that time I have found this group of individuals to be incredibly engaged, thoughtful and concerned about the overall well-being of the child. I have direct contact with one CPS case manager whom I have found to be creative, excellant in building concensus among all of the people involved in the case, and personally committed to the successful outcome of this case. I also have another resource should you need some additional help in Nevada County. Email: michaelfbarbieri@gmail.com

CPS here in Reno recently took custody of three of my grand children, two of them are special needs kids. I personally can only sing their praises. They acted swiftly and with no concern for anyone except the welfare of my grand children. I will admit that I became very frustrated with some of their demands, the arrogance that a few of their employee's displayed, that one hand didn't seem to know what the other was doing, but, all in all, their main concern was for the children. I hate to admit it, but our family had some suspicion's, but could never prove anything. Our agency here in Nevada went through some recent changes in order to make them more effcient and financially solvent. Check to see if your agency maybe hasn't also gone through the same change. I believe that the State and County agencies merged.

I keep reading theses stories of how cps doesn't do enough and they keep closing cases of real abuse and neglect. Well I will telling you what they are doing. They are screwing with people and kids that don't have any issues of abuse or neglect, but they are doing favors for some influential people. My parents basically kidnapped my children and called cps (a friend) and cps claimed to give gaurdianship of my kids to my parents (who are divorced) and they actually tranferred them to another school, broke into my house and took all their clothes and stuff all with in 3 days that I was out of town. I got a phone message that I was to be in court even though I wasn't on the docket, and the judge wouldn't even allow me to speak and just validated them!! This all happened with in 5 days and cps never came to my house, never interviewed me, NOTHING!!! so Inow I don't know what to do. My dad was a cop in the 70's here in Vegas which enables him to have some "juice " for lack of a better term. zHe self made with lots of money now and people just believ what he says with out question. I thought cps was supposed to be nonbiast?? I feel like I am fighting city hall by myself! I talked to my 6 year old this morning and I had to hang up listening to her crying her eyes out cause she wants to come home. They won't even let me see her! I have never had a complaint, a call, or any reports of abuse or neglect or abuse. I live for my kids but now because of a dad I don't get along with and some crooked cps agents I can't even see them and it is killing me! If anyone can help or send me in the right direction I would be eternally grateful!!! thanx

I too have had my bouts with CPS concerning my 4 grandchildren. I know first hand now that these worthless people are really not here for Washoe County kids. So who is ? Nobody ! Just the few such as myself and YOU , that only want the very best for these kids. We need to step up and let the public know (not find out the hard way like we had to) that these people are not for the children, and we NEED to find out WHO is.... Any one with me on this one?? Lets do it for the kids, mykids, your kids, every child! because right now WE are the ONLY voice for these children.
I have corresponded with Joe Hart channel 4 news in Reno and feel he will help and guide us in any way he possibly can. He is a great man and has giving me alot of hope through my own ordeal. It cant hurt to speak for the ones who have not a voice.
Thank you, Nancy
