Doug Boccone is an idiot..
First Mr. Boccone.. legal and AFFORDABLE rentlas are hard to find my friend.. they practically DON'T exist.

LI is completely UNAFFORDABLE period. For a family making double the national median income to have to struggle to get by here is a strong indicator.. If we all left LI there would be nothing left ON LI!

But no worries..I'm leaving aS soonas I can

My wife is a teacher. She gets a stack of essays on Friday and by Sunday, her head is spinning. She insists that most students go out of their way not to read her corrections. Ms. Molt is not suggesting that teachers, such as my wife, are burned out on teaching. They are simply exhausted from trying to teach the same dog the same tricks over and over and over and over!

Thank you for pointing out my error. I will be more careful in the future.
I was talking about teachers being burnt out and growing weary being a problem. It seemed as if the teacher was using this as an excuse. I agree that there is no simple answer and we ask alot from our teachers. Thank you for all your efforts.
Also, re-read the letter. She's not giving any excuse for anything. By the way, it's a lot, not alot. How many times did your teachers have to correct you on this error and yet, you still make it, don't you? That's the entire point. Stick to making comments on what you know.

What would you say is the extent of the problem? Is it something in the area of 10% of the student population writing poorly? Is it a third? More than that? I know it's just anecdotal evidence, but the writing that I see on some of these threads -- coming from students -- is unbelievable. It's as if they're all functionally illiterate.

This isn't a matter of assigning blame to a particular party. Educating a child requires the cooperation of parents, teachers, and the community. It's troubling that you seem to be able to critique our entire educational system based upon this incident. Children spend the majority of their time with their families, and the most important years of literacy development--when the foundation is set--are between birth and age three.
Because of No Child Left Behind, the emphasis has shifted from developing authentic literacy skills to passing a standardized test every year.
If parents want to help develop their children's literacy, encourage them to read. Share books, stories, and let them see reading occur frequently. Literacy skills, including grammar and mechanics, are developed through regular reading practices, which must begin at home.
Teachers are required to pass rigorous exams and complete a Masters Degree within five years. We are doing the best we can under the current constraits of federal mandates. Have you also considered that a changing economy has altered the family structure and children are becoming increasingly affected by mass media/digital culture, rather than by their parents?
