Full story: Newsday

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy now aims to eliminate 675 county positions to save $30 million in budget cuts, a move a committee agreed Tuesday to send to the full Legislature for a vote next week.

Maybe its time to have a Long Island executive instead of two county executives. It seems as if Levy is willing to play hardball with the civil service unions, beat them at their game, and save taxpayers money. If only this was true in Nassau.
Your right, he is playing hardball, but only for the sake of playing hardball. What is really saving. He has the money in a tax stabilization fund to cover the shortfall. He overtaxed SC residents in prior years to get the 130 million dollar surplus. Do you really think that he will lower taxes and give the money back to the taxpayers? You must be dreaming.

Wow it took only an hour for some fat lazy %$#^ to complain about a Cops salary. Please before you whine maybe you should walk or even better jump in the back seat one day for a ride along. I guarantee you wouldnt think that after dealing with the idiots like yourself for 8 hours a day...
A ride along ? to where ? Dunkin Donuts ? or at your overpaid salary maybe we should go to Starbucks then we chat for hours behind the fire house. How come there is so much crime behind all the LI fire houses ?What do you guys do back there anyway ?

Really you don't think your overpaid ? Really ? C'mon we all know Suff & Nass cops. They tell us the storys. It's a pretty cushy job. You work part time. Maybe you should walk in the shoes of real working people before you go opening up your overpaid donut hole. Your salaries are gonna be next. To all you gov suckubusses - the j i g is up. Time you learn what it's like to work like real working people !!

Layoffs. 8% raises when the economy booms b/c they didnt get those raises in 2002-2007. 3% pay cuts now, big raises like the private sector when it rebounds, right?

There was a time when unions were needed, and served a purpose. Now they try to play hardball with their members lives at stake. There are many people out of work now, who would LOVE to have stayed at their job, and taken a cut, but weren't given that option. Unfortunately for the members, the unions don't always win. they union should go to their members and say: either we take a pay cut and everybody still has a job, or we stand firm, and some of our members will be out of work. Let them vote on it, and deal with the consequences

More leadership by intimidation. Isn't it amazing how all of the union exempt employees are even going to be asked to do a lag payroll. More Steve Levy doublespeak. Go ahead Steve, cut some more. Nice Job Steve, you've destroyed a really good workforce, apparently you were sleeping when the Dale Carnegie course gave the section on PEOPLE SKILLS!
OH, STOP ALREADY!!! There's plenty more Suffolk County employees around to suck up all that nice salary and OT. Destroyed? Give me a break!

I have an idea...Why don't we hire 100 illegal alien bounty hunters! Just think of the money the taxpayers will save...no more free medical, no more welfare for the bambinos, no more paying for second langauge teachers, no more room and board in the jails, etc, etc,
And the best part will be, for each non-taxpaying illegal alien that we send back a job will be created for a taxpaying U.S. citizen! Think of the money we will save.

Sometimes the answer is so easy that it escapes us!

Good luck

Perhaps he ought to start with himself. Enough of this talk about laying off people! The goal is to keep as many people employed as you can in this economy. Next time around, however, be more judicious with the taxpayers' money when negotiating union contracts. In other words, live and learn.....but just let it alone right now.

How is cutting roadc service , and cutting the people who keep the homeless off the streets.

How is this going to have the least effect on residents.

I guess he wants more tent towns all over long island .

I am a hardworking family guy, who due to family medical circumstances forgoed reaping big bucks for stability and after two decades of service am facing the ax. I get the feeling that my some of my fellow taxpayers are relishing in my misfortune. I will save the long story and get right to the point, I perform a critical job, actually make the taxpayers money and am proud of my service to thousands of county residents. If I must go, I cannot understand the actual choosing process. Rest assured it is skewered and the underlying motives are at best questionable.
I seek no sympathy but to be called a slacker is just too much. If I must go for some reason cooked up, then I must go, but to be labeled a slacker when I have given 110% every day for years and KNOW that the taxpayer was very well served at a profit to the county makes me sick.
NOT EVERY CIVIL SERVANT IS A LAZY NO GOOD WASTE. I AM WALKING PROOF THAT THE PEOPLE ARE WELL SERVED AND THAT THIS WHOLE PROCESS IS SUBJECT TO MUCH NEEDED GREATER SCRUTINY!

It's obvious that Levy doesn't need the unions support. He has over 3 million in funds for any campaign he chooses to run in and has the backing if the polls are correct with the voting public. He is winning if anyone hasn't figured it out yet. He may not win the war. Time will tell. But, right now there isn't much support for the unions with the public when a good amount of them are out of a job.

Yes, I know why most go into public service. Job security and a steady increasing with inflation pay check instead of the chance to become wealthy, but the public doesn't care to listen to that arguement or care. Just keep my taxes the same and if it means laying off county workers, making them take pay cuts or replacing SCPD cops with Sheriff Deputies that's fine with them. It's not right, but that's the sense that I get when I read this board and others.

Intelligent conversation or debate does not seem to have a home here.No county employee is against helping the county. That being said all they want is for the county exec. to open the books and prove his statements about a county shortfall . If he could be trusted they would not need to ask. They want to know if the county is broke or is the county exec. just bankrolling for an election year.

I have enjoyed seeing all the deputies on the expressway. There is about 3 times as many as them, then the overpaid fat suffolk cops

That would cost money, which the county does not have, idiot.

And social services are not what is bankrupting the county. Most of those programs are at the very least federally subsidized. Please wake up!
