Why not do something for the innoncent 13 year old who was also killed when they were speeding and lost control of the car?

Make sure there's room to add more names for the many more fatal accidents likely to occur.

Why are they building a memorial for these kids? They weren't even supposed to be driving. Thanks to them speeding, they took the life of a 13 year old boy. Their reckless and deadly actions should not be memorialized. Why isn't the school stepping in and enlightening the students who are behind this memorial? Stupid and foolish behavior should not be rewarded.
Can you read? The boys being memorialized were not the ones driving the car, they were passengers. Your mean spirit says so much about your character. You should be ashamed of yourself.

did anyone read today's Newsday. there was an article about some of you folks and your self righteous, judgmental, hateful comments.

1) the kids at Smithtown West didn't know the 13 year old, he was disabled and homeschooled. of course they feel sympathy for his family, but why would they memorialize him?

2) the two 17 year olds who died were PASSENGERS. thye died because their friend lost control of his car, not for anything either of them did.

3) one senseless act of stupidity on the part of a teenager does not mean he or she is worthless. none of us are defined by a single act, we all do foolish things -- some more so than others. but I'd hardly say three teenage boys were "worthless" because one of them thought he was invincible behind the wheel of a car.

4) the boys left friends and family who grieve for them. you are so totally lacking in compassion for the friends and family. would you like it if we came to the funeral of one of yoru family members and made mean, spiteful comments?

5)and most important -- can't something good come out of something tragic? consider this a learning experience for all the students at Smithtown West. maybe one of them will think twice when he or she gets behind the wheel of a car, and maybe this tragdy will prevent another accident from happening.

Will the memorial include any mention of the fact that these stupid, useless teenagers were killed as a result of their own stupidity and failure to respect the law?
I didn't think so.
can you PLEASE explain to me how PASSENGERS are responsible for a car crash?

As others have already mentioned, the students that the memorial is for were not driving the vehicle. They, too, were victims along with the innocent 13 year old boy.

What I'm curious about, and what I cannot seem to find anywhere on newsday.com , are the reprecussions for the driver who caused these deaths. What ever happened?

If I remember correctly he was also seriosly injured, but I don't remember if he was charged with aything. If he was, that trial isn't likely to take place for many motnhs, so you won't be hearing about it in Newsday for awhile.

Maybe because it's the right thing to do. Wheter he is disabled or home schooled should not matter. he is the innocent party here. It would have been a kind jesture for them to have reached out and acknowledged his existence.

Sure.

Tell their friends to slow down.
Tell their friends that they don't need to leave "campus" for lunch.
Tell their friends to turn down the music or stick to one station, and pay attention to the road (not necessarily the reason for the accident, but I'm saying in anyway).
Tell their friends to stop texting, chatting, etc. on their cell phones regardless of whether they have a hands free device (again not necessarily the reason).

Ashamed of myself? Everyone in that car was in the wrong. The passengers in the car could've encouraged him to drive more safely or not at all since he was illegally driving. Wake up!

Answer:With a memorial. That is how they are being rewarded. They should never have been in the car at all. They were ILLEGALLY drving!

My brother lost his life in this accident. He was just a passenger and did not deserve to die. Neither did the two other boys. I can speak bluntly by telling you neither of the boys in that car were the type to encourage anyone to drive in a wreckless fashion. How dare you assume that every kid who gets in a car even as a passenger is wreckless. There are still parents out there who do instill proper behavior behind the wheel of a car and in all aspects of life. These boys have parents like that. You don't know anything about them but yet you assume they were bad kids. That is the farthest thing from the truth. Most parents could only wish for children like them.

The students who are putting this memorial together are doing a wonderful job and they have kind hearts, unlike most of you on this forum. I only hope you never have to loose a loved one the way our families did.

And believe me the 13 year old boy has not been forgotten by ANYONE.

This memorial is not rewarding anyone for stupidity or recklessness. These boys were not driving and were just passengers. They were wonderful kind people who are loved and missed by their families and friends.

So get your heads out of your asses and mabye try to do some good for your community instead of picking on some kids who are trying to do something you could never yourself achieve.

Well said, sister. The two kids killed were someone's son, brother, boyfriend, bestfriend. Some of the comments on this board are inhuman.

I think the entire idea is great. No one is being rewarded for their behavior in this, they're being memorialized for their lives.

all wonderful suggestions, and I repeat them on a frequent basis to my teenagers whenever they get into a car with a friend.

but do you have any idea whether the young man drving the car was doing any of the above? or whether telling him to stop would have been effective? all we know is that the car was going too fast, we don't know if there were any other distractions that may have contributed to the accident, and we certainly don't know if either of the dead passengers had any control whatsoever on the driver's actions.

there's only so much you can do as a passenger. it's not your hands on the wheel or your foot on the gas pedal.

you keep saying "they" were driving illegally. who are "they"?

NOTHING THE PASSENGERS DID WAS ILLEGAL!!!!!!

the only misconduct was on the part of the driver, who was driving too fast and who still had a restricted license, even though he had submitted the paperwork for an unrestricted license. the school had an open campus policy, so the boys were allowed to leave school for lunch. what crime did the PASSENGERS commit?
